Umphrey's McGee & STS9 Forced to Cancel Final Gig (8/2) of Tour In Atlanta

Following intense rain, last night's Umphrey's McGee/STS9 tour closing show in Atlanta was cancelled. What follows is a note from the Umphrey's fellas.

From blog.umphreys.com/cs/blogs/thefloor:

Umphrey's McGee
The last 24 hours have been eventful. Yesterday at this time everyone was resting up for the final show of the UM/STS9 tour, going about the proverbial 'business as usual.' About 20 minutes before the scheduled show time the band was talking over the set list when we finally accepted the fact that a heavy but brief storm was about to roll through downtown Atlanta. No problem we thought, we'll just push back the start time 15-20 minutes once the heavy stuff passes. None of us were so lucky.

The massive lightening that danced around the Atlanta skyline hit two separate power transformers and knocked out electricity in much of the downtown area, including all of Masquerade Park. The winds blew so heavily that several of our lightning trusses came crashing to the ground along with a plethora of microphones and instruments. The integrity of the stage was compromised as one of the support towers showed signs of bowing once the rain began to collect in heavy pockets on the roof. Tarps proved no match for the wind gusts that filled them like kites. Darkness began to fall with out a single light on in the entire venue holding 4,000 people.

A team comprised of various personnel from UM, STS9, the show's promoter and local production crews immediately began strategizing how we could still manage to pull off a show. Every scenario possible was considered and reconsidered. Jake and Brendan even contemplated pulling two acoustic guitars and sitting at the lip of the stage for an impromptu sing along but the stage wasn't even deemed safe for that. Ultimately every scenario revealed itself impossible as the reality of a powerless venue sank further and further in. At that point, we were entirely dependent on the City of Atlanta and the electric company. It was frustrating for all of us as we couldn't even make an announcement over the PA to loop the fans in on what info we had. We were all bummed that the run had to finish like this and we are already strategizing on how to make it up to all of you who tried to come out and support us.

With the venue empty and the stage pitch black, a generator finally showed up to provide some light for a uber s l o w load out. The power company finally got the electricity back on around 1:30 at which point most of us were already asleep trying to squeeze in as much rest as we could for our 6:00 a.m. bus ride to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport. We caught an 8:30 flight to lovely White Plains, NY before a 45 minute van ride to Bridgeport, CT for the Gathering of the Vibes festival. An hour of downtime in the hotel is a glorious respite at this point but I wanted to at least try to fill you in on yesterday's happenings. Stay tuned for more odds and ends from the tour. We all had an outstanding time with STS9 and all of you that came out to catch a show or three. Plenty more pics, audio snippets, and general ramblings to come. I think everyone just needs a few days at home to catch up on some R&R.

Bummer. But these guys don't need to justify anything.. There is absolutly NO reason for any band to perform on a wet stage, with lightning, and unsafe conditions.

With that being said, i bet they come back and rock out super duper hard for the ATL crowd at the next show.

It'd also be cool if they honored the tickets to this show for their next one

That is lame. Better safe than sorry when it comes to lighting though.

Well sorry about the news in ATL. Love the Masq Park. Umphs STS9 and Pgroove under the stars .... ???? Doesn't get much better than that. Bummer to those who lost that chance. Hope you're all allright.

My thanks then, to the Umphs guys for making it up to rock at the Gathering. Your set was indeed one of the highlights of the weekend.

Get some R&R fellas, and make it up quick for Hotlanta.

Why would you say fuck the masquerade, ice? Is it really thier fault that intenese storms came through and wiped out all the power in the area? If you blame the venue for that, you are a true moron!

and 35 miles northwest, Assembly of Dust were also scheduled for an outdoor concert (free) and a transformer blew out. The band regrouped and a coffee shop next to the town park where the concert was scheduled offered that they could play there. They borrowed an acoustic from a guy in a local band, played the coffee shop's acoustic piano, a bongo as the bass, and a kick and snare as the drums. Reid sang without a mic for the whole 1:45 show and the only lighting was candles and a flashlight.

The owner of the coffee shop was walking around offering pastries and cupcakes to everyone and a cupcake with a candle was brought up for AOD's drummer at the end of the show.

Great experience for the 50-75 of us that were there.

yo i say fuck the masquerade too.

not so much for having their power go out, but for stealing everyone's shit friday night. Friday night they had employees walking through the crowd in black t-shirts taking people's bowls and weed and shit. It's just their job? Maybe, ok, until some of them were trying to SELL it back to the crowd. An employee came up to me with a sack of grass and was like "hey guys i had to take this because its my job but here if you guys want to buy it its pretty good stuff 50 bucks"

how fucked up is that?

The show in St. Louis was hit by a storm. These bands do care, if they didn't once that storm hit they would have left. STS9 played on a stage covered in water risking their health for the fans. The bands were put in between a rock and a hard place during the Atlanta show. If I was there, I would understand the next show they play will be sick. Just wait on the next time they play in your city. Now if it was a mainstream act, yeah I would agree they don't care. These bands tour year round for us, let's stand behind them when the times are rough.

gmoo, you and some of these other people are hilarious! ya gotta love the jam band community. A heavy storm passes through making the show get cancelled, and what do these bands do? just come out and say "we cancelled the show"? no, not in the age we live in, where bands send out statements describing in detail every step that led up to their desicions. I love it. And then you crazy kids get on here and say it's "lame" and you are "pissed at both of these bands". hahaha what else could they do to make up for this unfortunate incident? come to your house and smoke a bowl with you?

UM's set friday 8-1 was spastic and dis-jointed, basically the song list sucked terribly. I like UM most of the time, but what an awful song selection!!! sts9 played a great set list!!!!

I think its funny anyone could think Tribe could play an acoustic set. How would they play there famous song, "Same 4 Notes For 30 Minutes," or the classic, "Play Really Fast, Slow It Down a Bit?" But for realz, you can't expect a band to plug in and play in a storm like that, especially an electric based (musically inept)band. Remember kids, if the thunder don't get you, then the lightning will!

I think for ticketmaster its the kinda thing that when you bought the ticket you entered into a contract, so whatever the policies on the screen when you bought it on computer or what is says on the back of the ticket is what you are bound to......... so if it says acts of god etc...... no refund than your not getting a refund. If it says if show is cancellled please call this number..... then call it.

The fact that some of you say that both bands don't care about there fans is honestly one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. I was at Madison waiting in the rain to find out whether the weather would keep the bands from playing. After a heavy rainfall like that most bands say fuck it and don't play even if it does clear up in half an hour. The crew got right to work and taped everything up and covered all the electronics so they wouldn't get wet if more rainfall did start to come. The bands still wanted to play and they were both still dedicated about not cancelling the show. I'm sure they were trying to pull out all the tricks and try to still play a show in ATL, but the weather was just to shitty. Give Respect for the bands and crew for making such an amazing tour happen.

Also not every member of Umphrey's is a stinky cubs fan. Andy Faraq is a bonafide White Sox fan. GO SOX!

I don't blame the bands for this at all but it still completely sucked!!! I spent so much money driving to Atl. and for the hotel and food. It's still really upsetting to think about it. This was going to be my first show for both bands and I was really hoping that UM would just kill it. I will never drive that far or spend that much money for a single show again. Festi's are still cool but a single show just isn't worth it.

Too bad Atlanta got canceled, I guess all the L, Molly and chemicals lead the crowd to beleive it was raining and lightning. Maybe if they just drank beers and smoked weed,. the trip wouldnt have been as intense. Not trying for this to be a negative post, just putting up some tribe sarcasm!
