Dream Theater/Opeth Tour

Dream Theater
Two of progressive metal's finest bands – Dream Theater and Opeth - have joined forces for the inaugural Progressive Nation Tour. This tour serves as the concluding leg of Dream Theater's "Chaos In Motion" world tour in support of their Roadrunner debut, 2007's excellent Systematic Chaos. It also marks the return of Sweden's almighty Opeth to US shores in support of their forthcoming opus, Watershed, due out June 3rd.

Dream Theater will headline the tour, with Opeth providing main support. The bill is rounded out by Between The Buried and Me and Three, making for a diverse, eclectic evening of forward-thinking, mind-bending music.

The tour has been a long time in the making and is the brainchild of Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.

"I've been wanting to assemble a package tour like this for many years now. With all of the festivals and package tours that go through America, I've been talking with our manager and agent for over 10 years now about doing something that focuses on the more progressive, musician-oriented side of hard rock and metal I decided it was time to stop talking the talk, lace up and finally walk the walk," says Portnoy.

Opeth guitarist-vocalist Mikael Ǻkerfeldt says, "We're very excited about this upcoming tour with Dream Theater. It will be the first tour that we're doing in support of our upcoming record and also somewhat of a dream come true personally, as I've been a fan of theirs for a long time. It's quite intimidating to be on the bill with such amazing musicians but obviously we'll try and give them a run for their money and pull out a few nice licks of our own. I guess we'll need to practice a little bit for this!"

yes its kind of odd these bands are coverd on jambase, but whatever.

Dream Theater used to be really good. they wrote some amazing albums back in the day, such as Images and Words, Metropolis Pt. 2, Awake, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Hell I even though Train of Thought had some pretty decent song-writing on it. Howeve, their last 2 albums have been PATHETIC. Octavarium was real crappy with the exception of the epic title song. The new one, Systematic Chaos, or whatever its called its so bad its laughable. Listen to some of the song names, "Forsaken", "The Ministry of Lost Souls", and my personal favorite, "The Dark Eternal Night". what is this, emo dream theater? such a shame these amazing musicians have seem to have lost it.

Opeth on the other hand, are one of the best metal bands still around. Although I wish they still had their original drummer, who I feel wrote some of the most amazing drum parts ever (see the song "deliverence). Albums like "Blackwater Park", "My Arms Your Hearse", and "Still Life" are essentials for metal bands. truly amazing songwriting.

I wouldve been flipping shit over this tour like 4 years ago

Yea Dream Theater was awesome back in the day, I forget all the names to the songs, but i like the one with the stem cell research news cast in the beginning and Mike Portnoy doing crazy drums...really good stuff. Opeth is pretty good too. The drummer is sick! And being a drummer I appreciate it a lot. But on jambase, that baffles me. Anyways.

opeth is the shit! "April Ethereal", "The Moor", and "Dirge for November", are great songs as well. the vocals probably turn a lot of people off but i think they sound awesome. dude sounds so evil when he is growling and then can sing with the voice of an angel. if you can't handle the metal, they released an album called "Damnation" that is pretty mellow. wasn't expecting jambase to cover these guys but its awesome that they are.

I agree with you zumakiller, this is awesome that they cover these type of bands. I'm a HUGE phish fan and love MMW but I have a tattoo of Opeth and they definitely belong on this website. I only wish Martin Lopez was still in the band. I know this album will be lacking his great dynamics and techniques. But I'll still listen with an open mind. Good stuff.

oh and its pretty funny though that they still have a pic of the band with Martin Lopez in it and Peter Lindgren for that matter. He recntly left the band too. So I think they need to update the band profile. But then again Jambase is probably ran by some big Heads that wouldn't know if Warren Haynes left Govt. Mule. But its still cool that they try.

i agree this may be out of place for jambase, but opeth is insane. watched the lamentations dvd on two hits of liquid and it blew my mind. like zumakiller said, one minute Mikael's voice is like an angel then the next minute one of the most bruttal sounding gutteral voices ever heard, and it is done seamlessly

Sven.. Emo Dream Theater? That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Lyrics have very little do to with the big picture, especially with Dream Theater. At least I can hear all the lyrics unlike half of Opeth's. Blasting Dream Theater for touring with Opeth is like these idiots hating on STS9 for touring with Umphrey's: obviously favoring the less talented.

Henrock you're wrong too. Martin Lopez was the drummer on My arms your hearse. that was his first record with Opeth, then he recorded every album until the new one which will be released in June (watershead). His last record was Ghost reveries. He was an amazing drummer, and the band will not be the same without him. But I will still buy the new record and judge for myself. I've seen them five times, twice since Martin Lopez left and they are really missing his skills. But I'll give Mikael the benefit of the doubt, because he is yet to let me down with any of his albums. Not trying to bash you Henrock, just want the facts to be straight. This band deserves the respect, regardless of who reports their material. And he does sing like an angel. Peace

I can't believe no one has mentioned John Petrucci (DT guitarist). Without a question he is the baddest shredder alive today; one of the fastest mofos on earth. Their lyrics blow sometimes, but musically they're a lot of fun to listen to.

Check out Liquid Tension Experiment (basically instrumental DT)
