YMSB: Mountain Tracks Vol. 5

Adam Aijala - YMSB :: 02.16 by Mason Cummings
Yonder Mountain String Band is known for its high-energy, improvisational live shows, never playing the same set twice. This release, on the band's own Frog Pad Records, marks the 5th volume in their lauded series of live albums, Mountain Tracks, capturing the essence of a live Yonder show.

Mountain Tracks 5 is a double-disc CD featuring the unreleased and in-demand live show from Columbus, OH at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion (July 21, 2007). It also features a compilation disc of the best live tunes handpicked by the band from the past couple of years.

As bassist Ben Kaufmann notes, "it's a 'through-the-years' set of music" with the material ranging from 2004 through 2007. The compilation album has been sequenced so that it recreates the flow of an actual live show.

Twisting and bending their traditional bluegrass instrumentation (mandolin, banjo, guitar and bass) with rock, improvisation, and fine songwriting, Yonder has pioneered their own, distinguished sound, one they represent each night in their live shows. This live album truly captures that unique sound and live energy that is Yonder Mountain String Band. Experience Mountain Tracks 5 April 15, 2008.

In support of the new release, Yonder will be on tour in April and playing many major festivals this summer.

Can't wait to hear the "booing" from St. Louis that Ben Talked about before having everyone boo the band in the middle of the second set.

Glad to see they included a live set this time around. Yonder is one of the few groups I actually enjoy hearing interact with the crowd, and too much of that was missing on Vol. 4.

I usually don't make comments about the city I reside in being missed by bands because it happens to everyone and the scene is definitely different in Seattle, than the East, which is where I was up till 2 years ago, but SPOKANE (sorry Eastern Washington) and no Seattle..thought the show was great last year at Neumos...oh well I'll just keep looking forward to the String Summit

I was at the last STL show and the booing was provoked by Jeff (Wearing a cubs shirt). HE was the one that asked everyone to boo, all in good fun though. Being a cards fan and a yonder fan there was definatly no hatered ment toward the band, only those damn cub fans. GO CARDS!!!

The only time I've heard Yonder booed is when Jeff starts telling the crowd that they can "make it a real short night" if people don't stop throwing glowsticks at the stage.

I hate seeing people throw glowsticks during these types of shows, especially when the ban has made it abundantly clear that they don't want it to happen. Unfortunately I think yonder may have to walk off stage or cut a show off early at some point to get this to stop. I hope not, but I can see it happening.

No glowsticks at Asheville, and a member of the band who started the glowstick phase was on stage (Jon Fishman). Why the hell would you need glowsticks at a Yonder show anyway? If youre not busy dancing youre doing something wrong

I JUST recently picked up Vol. 1 so I may just have to get Vol. 2 - 5 now.

I was at the last Columbus show and it was amazing, I am so glad that they picked that one for the mountain tracks, but no Red Rocks show on it, I hope they include that on their next Mountain Tracks, Go Yonder, see you this summer

The booing was provoked by Ben. He made a comment about it being included on the next Mountain Tracks. He explained that he was going to introduce the band and wanted everyone to boo with everything they have. "If your a Cards fan just think about the Cubs, or if your a Cubs fan the Cardinals" He then went on to say something like "ladies and gentleman the hottest bluegrass band in the land today, the Yonder Mountain String Band" at which point everyone booed as loud as they could, then they broke out into a song (unfortunately I can't recall at what point of the set this was). He definably said something about it being on the next Mountain Tracks thou. Anybody remember when this was in the set or the name of the band that played at the Halo Bar afterwards?

I think the song that they went into from the booing may have been Peace of Mind. I also think that the name of the band was Greensky Bluegrass or something along those lines.

was at this mnt. tracks show in c-bus -- was great -- also a couple of weeks ago w/ fishman -- not as good as the release but was in no way disappointed w/ the output. -- these guys are just fun to go see - just don't hit them w/ any of those stupid glow sticks :)

So I understand many of you are upset that they aren't coming to Seattle, as I was upset that they weren't coming to Portland. (I hear Jeff gets too wild in our little town). And I said Bend? WTF? Considering I used to live there, I know just how bad their music scene can be and I think it's great that Yonder is making an appearance in both Bend and Spokane. As cityfolk, we have so many opportunities to see great music, and I don't mind sharing. That being said, I'll see y'all in Spokane and Bend! HOLLA!
