I really hope they just announced the early morning side stage acts. Is that seriously the initial lineup?

I remember when the Initial LINE-Up got you excited for the festival and would make you want to buy tickets- but as they inflate the ticket price they will announce more shitty bands and then you are screwed cause you bought the bargan tix hoping for a good line up. High sierra was a grate fest

up till about 6 years ago- WHY THE GREED HSMF? Go back to being a fest people will travel for. this fest will cost the average goer $600.00-$1500.00 1n 4 days--- give people there summer vacation back

Folks, "many more acts will be added" kind of says it all. This is a simple heads-up about the first official acts. High Sierra has a habit of announcing bigger acts closer to the festival. But, I still hold HSMF is perhaps the most enjoyable festival environment I've ever encountered. And really everything costs more these days and if you don't want to budget for a festival then you don't have to. For me, I'm just picking more carefully and spending my money where I think it will bring me the most enjoyment. You vote/endorse with your dollars. Instead of complaining just don't attend a festival you think is unreasonably priced. Sound reasonable?

I agree that festival prices have gotten a little crazy. When I first started going tix were $60-$90. I know, inflation and all that, but damn. I paid $170 to get in to GOTV. It was worth it, and I'm going back this year, but it is a lot. Also I wish more festivals would make Thurs. nights optional. I don't like to take the extra vacation day and I have a hard time recovering from Fri and Sat night as it is. It sucks to feel like I paid for a show I didn't go to.

Oh yeah. I've always wanted to go to HSMF but you couldn't even get me off the couch for any of those bands. Except maybe dumpstaphunk, been wanting to check them out. I'm sure they will have a good line-up but that was barely worth mentioning IMO. Anyone else feel like Railroad Earth is a little overrated?

Relax relax, HSMF will pull through with an exciting line up. This festival is about the community as well as the music and has always a been a place to be turned on to new bands (to me more than the headliners). I agree the late night shows are a little bunk. I liked HSMF better when it was 2 stages and 1 late night tent that didn't cost anything extra!

No Phix this year? haha. Yeah, agree with carrot top, it's January folks and HSMF has done this in the past where they'll announce Dave Matthews like the night before the festival. FOLKS, it's January... Uh oh, I mentioned Dave...I hope I didn't start Jambase's Dave Debate 2008...oh no!!

I went one year when they had the duo, alfred howard & the k23, JFJO and Aphrodesia, those were all new bands to me and the diversity made that year my favorite. I love the bluegrass, but a little too much over the past few years though they should bring back Snake Oil Medicine show, love their vibe

I thought since they had a new record to promote, this would finally be the year they got the crowes. Still not too late i guess.

If anyone from High Sierra reads this I would also like to have Iron & Wine, Ween, Alfred Howard and the K23 Orchestra, JFJO, and the Wood Brothers.

all the past lineups have looked good so no need to lose faith. I also want to add that railroad earth is by no means overated, I would say they're grossly underated and im my oppinion one of the best bands out there these days. Some one said the same for yonder and personally I've never seen a bad yonder show. And as for the guy who trashed the Mickey Hart band, your intitled to you opinion I just don't know how you can go wrong with Kimock,Gordon,Molo, and Hart. And his acheivements stand on there own because he's a great musician. And yes He was apart of the Grateful Dead but I'm not sure why you would hold being apart of the(if not one of the) greatest rock bands of all time agaist him. In fact why bring him up to insult him he's not on this lineup. And trashing jerry is a serious fowl particuly because this is "JAM"base and there wouldn't be a jam scene without jerry. And why insult his weight "fat guitar player" If you want to read about indie pop bands go buy a Rollingstone. Aside from my rant sparrow quartet looks great I heard they play amixture of american, chinease and mongolian folk music. I think amy washburn was translator for the UN and fell in love with chinease folk music. And with bela how could you go wrong. It' s cool to see oneside because they play at this liitle pub down the street from here in NH and although though the one time I heard them it didn't do it for me it's still cool to see some new local band(I think there out of boston, could be wrong) be successfull.

Nice post wharfrat, glad to see someone knows something about music and doesn't bring contradiction to their posts like that mikemac guy (btw, I was being sarcastic about my Phix comment, notice the "HAHA" after the question mark bud. So you'd rather watch Chris Robinson, a guy who joined a band in 2004 just so he could sing songs written by your fat guitar player? And comparing Golden Voice to HSM is like...haha, nevermind, I better get busy checking out real lineups to music festivals. Argh! Fried Chicken! Chuck Taylors! vintage T's from Kohl's! warm Keystone! Humboldt?! Wookie SDSU chicks! It's just music, fellas. But you gotta love reading the hate speech, haha.

This festival has the most amazing family vibe out of any fest I have been to except for Cheese at Horning's (They;ll be back in 2009, just watch!!!). I can understand people's frustrations with this initial line-up especially considering the only band I even care about on it is RRE. BUT listen to the other threads, they always ad some amazing acts right towards the end (like Page last year). I also know the prices are getting crazy, but look at what you get here as opposed to most other fests: (1) Instead of camping in a field you camp in the beautiful shade of the Sierra Mountains (2) It's at a local fairgrounds so you actually have running toilets, not Honey Buckets, and actual showers to enjoy (3) 5 stages of pretty much non-stop music (4) Multiple SICK latenight options every night (5) No Shady Vibes. This is a west coast fest, meaning very few East Coast Gangsta Thug Hippie. This is a family fest, no one goes to work the lot. Honestly, after going to many Midwest fests (Hookah-schwills and All Hoods) it's honestly nice to feel like you can trust that you can leave your drum, frame pack, and other valuables in your tent without fear of them being stolen. (6) Size. This fest tries to keep its numbers small so you can actually enjoy your experience. Everyone can admit its frustrating sometimes having to deal with 250,000 plus fans and camping 2 miles away from the stage. Honestly, the list can go on and on. If the next round of additions strikes that nerve, do yourself a favor and GO!!!!!!!!!!

Wookie SDSU chicks eh? I go to that school and let me tell you something...not many wookies there. But if you are looking for a square mile with the highest concentration of hot girls in the entire country, then SDSU is the place to be on a warm spring day.

Ahem....70 more bands to go....anyone who thinks this is it, and is judging the fest based on this tiny list of bands, is seriously short sighted, or has never been to a HSMF.

This festival is priceless. CANT WAIT! They could blind me from the line up til I got to the fest and I wouldnt think twice about buying my ticket. High Sierras entity and community is strong like that.

This is only the sprig of parsley on the plate....wait til they announce dinner and dessert!

I have a feeling moe. will be there this year (HOPES). Hoping RRE plays til sunrise! Not many fests out there where you can hear the musings of RRE at 4am........

Ya'll are missing the point. This Fest is not about attracting the casual fan. Organizers have a set amount of tix they want to sell and will release bands slowly and very shrewdly in order to attract the amount and type of fan. How do you think this Fest year in and year out maintains its pure status and reputation. This isn't Vegoose or even Wakarusa. This lineup release is a calculated move to turn off some, turn on others.

I just got off work and felt the need to add to my list (Yeah, I'm a dork, so what. Atleast I'm posting this thread with two pretty girls chillin. SAY SOMETHIN!) (7) NEW MUSIC. This fest provides you with the opportunity to check out sooooo much new music. (8) Three words: BELLY DANCING WORKSHOPS. Who doesn't love seeing a field of sexy women shakin and shimmyin. (And the one or two guys with balls who are a hoot too). (9) Intimacy with the artists. There are few fests where the artists feel comfortable mingling with the fans. I got to chill with JFJO inside a serenity dome. I got to meet Karl D when he was enjoying a chocolate covered banana with his daughter. Getting to talk to Page and being treated to the ending of Squirming Coil one more time. NICE!!! (10) ;-)
