Michael Franti & Friends featuring Bob Weir :: 4.30.14 :: Sweetwater
Music Hall :: Mill Valley, CA
On April 30, Michael Franti headlined a benefit held at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill
Valley, CA that found him joined by a number of his musical friends to raise funds for his
Do It For the Love Foundation and Music Heals International. Bob Weir, one of the venue's
owners, was among Franti's guests at the benefit. The guitarist sat in on covers of
In Limbo" and "Three Little Birds" with Franti and his band. Not only did Bobby perform
with Michael, but he also took part in an impromptu set that included members of RatDog
such as Robin Sylvester, Jay Lane and Rob Wasserman. The brief performance included takes
on "West L.A. Fadeaway," "The Other One" and "Not Fade Away." Jason Crosby opened the show
with Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz, Reed Mathis and Ezra Lipp. Crosby later sat in on fiddle with
Weir and his RatDog-heavy backing band.
Here's more details on the causes that benefited from the concert:
Do It For The Love
Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization that brings the gift of live music to people with
life threatening illnesses, children with severe challenges and wounded veterans. We are a
network of musicians dedicated to bringing joy, healing, hope and an unforgettable
experience of celebrating life. Founded by musician Michael Franti and ER Nurse Sara Agah
and launched in August 2013, we have granted over 85 recipients and caretakers the
opportunity to enjoy shows, as well as Meet & Greet their favorite musicians. We've had
wishes granted by George Straight, Pink, Miley Cyrus, Jack Johnson, Michael Franti and
David Benoit to name a few, and have artists like John Oates, Train, Brett Dennen on board
as Music Ambassadors and have partnered with musicians from across the world to create
life changing experiences for their fans and families.
Music Heals International (MHI) was
founded in 2013 with the goal of bringing music and musicians to the children of Haiti and
to other parts of the world. MHI programs are designed to teach and inspire, using music
as a powerful force for education, creativity, and healing.
For it's first project, MHI is honored to collaborate with the nation's leading non-profit
for music education, Little Kids Rock, and the Haitian relief organization, J/P HRO, to
bring LKR's very special program to schools in Port Au Prince, Haiti for the first time,
focusing on the community of Delmas 32. The goal is to provide a transformative experience
in kids’ lives, and with the power of music, to inspire the creativity and confidence that
are critical to success in school and in life.
