Weekly RecommNeds | The Entrance Band And Our Solar System

There are many good strategies to discovering new music. One of many that I’ve employed that seems to have an unusually high success rate is simply just listening to whatever the Beyond Beyond is Beyond label releases. I’ve featured many in the past and still, here are two more utterly unique, blistering albums from BBIB. Looking forward to many more in 2014.

The Entrance Band –Face the Sun
Last fall’s Face the Sun from LA-based The Entrance Band opens with a nearly-9-minute jammer, “Fine Flow,” that packs a wallop of dirty, rocking psychedelic action that’s tough to say “no” to. As good as that is, The Entrance Band prove themselves to be far from a one-trick, one-trip pony. The rest of the album hits several notes both high and more subdued and lovely. Highly recommended.

Our Solar System –Vårt Solsystem
Our Solar System is another one of these mysterious musical collectives from Scandinavia that makes crazy awesome music seemingly from outer space. In this case, that’s just about the point of it: there are apparently 10 musicians each representing a planet (Pluto gets the nod here) & the asteroid belt of, well, our solar system. Each track is as varied as the heavenly bodies themselves – sometimes funky/groovy, sometimes rocking, sometimes way, way out there. Recorded live and, I believe, mostly improvised, this album is space jams at their most literal.
