Chicago sextet Umphrey’s McGee took a break from performing at the large Fillmore Auditorium in Denver to play a “Bill GrahUM” show at Denver’s The 1 UP Colfax arcade/live music venue. Fans voted on certain selections as the setlist was filled with a number of rarities and even a few cover debuts.

UM kicked off last night’s show with the “og” intro to classic “All In Time,” bringing back the long-lost introduction to one of the band’s most-performed songs. The “2X2” that followed foreshadowed tonight’s New Year’s Eve celebration with an “Auld Lang Syne” jam. “Night Nurse” led into rare original “Padgett’s Profile” and just the second-ever UM take on Elton John’s “Bennie And The Jets.” “Search 4” transitioned into one of the group’s “Jimmy Stewart” improvisation and a rare full-band version of keyboardist Joel Cummins’s “Orfeo” composition. A debut cover of Simple Minds’s “Don’t You (Forget About Me” brought the first set to a close.

The sextet opened the second set with heavy-hitter “Nothing Too Fancy.” Reggae-tinged fan-favorite “FF” led into a cover of “Legalize It” and a version of “Blue Echo” that UM LD Jefferson Waful described as the highlight of the run up until that point. Considering the venue was an arcade, “Q*Bert” was expected and UM delivered the goods. The closing stanza continued with the UM debut of Pleasure’s “Glide” and the first “Muff II:The Revenge” in 375 shows. A night of rarities continued with the band’s “The Girl Is Mine” > “Jane Says” > “The Girl Is Mine” sequence and an unusual jammed-out take on “The Fussy Dutchman.” UM closed out the night with their “In The Puppet Kitchen” mash-up.
