20 Phish Contemporary Covers Compilation

Last night at Phish's second show of their summer tour, they threw everyone a pretty huge curveball by opening the second set with a cover of "Energy" by The Apples in Stereo. While some fans were familiar with the song by the Athens, Ga.-based indie band (and others recognized it from a Pepsi commercial) the cover was largely unknown to the fanbase. The Apples in Stereo took to their Twitter feed to welcome their new attention, acknowledging almost all tweets referencing the cover, both good and bad. This is not the first-time that Phish has chosen to add a more contemporary cover to the band's growing repertoire. Some have been more serious interpretations: Smashing Pumpkins, TV On The Radio, than others: Katy Perry, Chumbawamba, below is a compilation of a number of modern cover selections, starting in 1997 and moving right up until last night's show.
