MOUNTAIN GOATS COVER GRATEFUL DEAD GEM
AT SOON-TO-BE-CLOSED MAXWELL’S IN HOBOKEN

The Mountain Goats
John Darnielle and his current version of the Mountain Goats visited famed rock club Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ last week just a few days after it was announced that the legendary venue will close at the end of July. Darnielle has never hidden his love for the Grateful Dead, going so far as to give a lesson on the band to a Stereogum writer as part of a Turntable Interview. When asked about the best periods of the Grateful Dead, Darnielle responded “the best live years for the Dead are probably ’69, ’72, and ’77, in that order, though you can get people arguing passionately about that.” We think he nailed it, though you can’t go wrong with ’73 or ’74 either.

The Mountain Goats have taken to covering the Grateful Dead and performed a version of American Beauty track “Ripple” as part of what’s likely to be their last-ever Maxwell’s gig. The fine folks of NYCTaper were on hand to record the Mountain Goats’ set and while the whole show hasn’t been posted yet, they shared a taste of the recording by uploading “Ripple” to SoundCloud.

Keep your eyes on NYCTaper for the release of the whole Mountain Goats show.
