Umphrey's McGee
The ascension continues for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee, not only in terms of their commercial success but in creative accomplishment and instrumental achievement as well. Their performance on Live at the Murat (SCI Fidelity), their first official live release, is as impressive as anything they've recorded to date, with the power and finesse, the yin and the yang, that have come to characterize their by-now classic material.

Recorded in Indianapolis in April 2007 and produced by longtime "sound caresser" / honorary seventh member Kevin Browning, the two-disc set features fan favorites like "Push the Pig," "The Triple Wide," "In the Kitchen," and "Nothing Too Fancy" along with rare tunes like the set-ending "Padgett's Profile" and the brief but torrid "Angular Momentum," centered on the combo of drummer Kris Myers and guitarist Jake Cinninger. The band also dusts off tunes like "Hajimemashite" from '98s Songs for Older Women, and the Yes meets Little Feat-influenced "40's Theme," a live favorite for the band and its fans.

Throughout the show, UM's invention brings the progressive instrumental chops of Zappa and the stylistic savvy of Steely Dan. It is innovative without being indulgent, exhilarating without losing control, and there are plenty of improv passages that keep the band and their fans off-balance. Clearly, logging 120 gigs a year, "live" is where UM lives.

Umphrey's can be amzing or can be mehhe kind of maybe sort of shitty... I love them to death, been to many of their shows. I really think there are only a few shows that really gives credit to these guys. The Murat is one of them, but if you check out Chicago Theatre 2006/03/10 oh my, now that is a show that should have been out on CD. the FuzzyD> is one of the tightest. Anyway can't wait for the Orbit room, it's always good to see them coming into my shitty town. New Years here I come!!!

ScIFrak I agree one hundred percent about the 3-10-06 show. That Fuzzy D is nice. Im big fan of the Jimmy Stewart that follows soon after w/Ray Liotta Goodfellas gangsta line at end. That whole show is great. If you haven't already, check out the 5-30-04 show from Summer Camp festival. It's sick as well.

They played well obviously but you can tell they were trying to make a live album, not just playing a show. It's better when their only intention is to melt faces and funk the crowd.

the opener in the kitchen>acoustic improv> electric improv> in the kitchen.

FOR ME, this is the highlight of the show.

the other disc with set 2 is the normal quirky kind of tunes that usually I really do not care for. I have seen great and not so great shows from these guys. I will continue to go see them, but its always a hit or miss, in terms of it being a fantabulous show...

I booked a room at a Super 8 on Lakeshore Dr. for 12/29-31 for around $450. It's about 2 miles from the venue but its by far the cheapest I saw.

Cutty I know you don't like Umphrey's. You tell us everyday, twice on this message board already. Should I tell you everyday that I don't like Snoop and Madonna?

i got on orbitz and found a good deal...roughly 500$ in the ambassador east hotel 5 miles from the aragon. and its no super 8 haha. id say hurry your ass to somewhere like orbitz or priceline and see what you can find, but I will warn you they all change day to day.

the best part about the ny run is that nye is their 10 year anniversary show. I cant even begin to comprehend that nonsense.
