It was great to see everyone out in grooving fashion last weekend at Sound Tribe Sector 9 and all the other great shows around town. Special thanks to Particle, for throwing such a great 25th birthday party for me as well. This weekend is looking just as good with a variety of funk and jamming and fantastic 4:20 parties all over the area including a special all-night party with local funkateers mamaSutra.
Thursday / April 19th
Tonight is pretty slow in Los Angeles. For a tasty helping of Latin Jazz you can check out Flora Purim and Airto Moreira at Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood. Down in San Diego you can check out a double dose of “pod bands” with Pseudopod opening up for jam-band veterans the Ominous Seapods at Winstons. San Diego’s own PsydeCar play at the Hard Rock Café in Downtown San Diego as well.
Friday / April 20th
Tonight is a grand celebration for many around the country. I don’t think I need to explain why this date or the numbers 4 and 20 are important, because you probably already know. Just remember to be safe out there. Music is alive and well in Los Angeles tonight though. One of many very enticing parties tonight is with rising funk kings and a very fun band called mamaSutra. The party is located at a recording studio on 2003 Lincoln in Santa Monica, just south of Pico Blvd. Not only will this show be recorded live on digital multi-track equipment but Tom Gardener will be painting a live improvisational painting of the band while they play all night long as well. Adding to the carnival-like feel will be The Kingpins fire-juggling madness, DJ Freedom Fighter, belly dancing, face and breast painting, and internet caricature creation with the SuperDudes. Tickets are $10 which include drinks and are available now on JamBaseTickets.com. Tonight will also be the big 4:20 birthday blowout for “Jammy Award” winner Barry Smolin, who hosts LA’s biggest jam-band radio program called "The Music Never Stops" every Friday night on KPFK 90.7 FM. For his party there will be a great triple billing of bands at the The Troubador in West Hollywood that includes Ruby Flux, 60’s revivalists The Negro Problem, and headlining will be the Ominous Seapods. Not far down the road will be another great show at the gorgeous El Rey Theater with Medicine Drum and the tribal-techno groove of Hawaii’s own Lost At Last. And if that wasn’t enough, another great double bill of PsydeCar and latin-funksters B-Side Players at Temple Bar in Santa Monica.
Saturday / April 21st
The B-Side Players and PsydeCar both make their way back to San Diego tonight. PsydeCar play at Victors on the Bay and the B Side Players play at Kensington Club. San Diego rock band Convoy also play tonight in Lake Forest at The Gypsy Lounge.
The Funkyard Music Festival in Long Beach on May 19th announced two more amazing additions this week including the masters of groove Soulive who will get a 1pm slot on the main stage and Portland, Oregon’s up-and-coming funk heroes The Porterhouse Quintet. This festival will also feature many of the hottest acts in the local and national funk and jam scene today including Greyhounds, Particle, Merl Saunders, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Vinyl, and the return of Steve Kimock Band. For more information on vending, location, tickets, bands, etc you can visit the festival's Website. Tickets for this event are also being sold at JamBaseTickets.com.
That’s all for now. Have fun and be safe out there this weekend.
