U.S. Homeland Security Bars Famed Mexican Acoustic Group, Forcing Group to Cancel Sold Out U.S. Tour Dates: Government Says Rodrigo Sanchez Has Name Similar to Barred Foreigner

MEXICO CITY—A renowned Mexican guitarist, member of the ATO Recording artists Rodrigo Y Gabriela, has been hold up here for over two weeks since the United States Embassy declined to renew his P-1 Entertainer Visa. This unexpected situation has led to the cancellation of half a dozen U.S. shows on Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s current tour, and put in jeopardy many other major concerts and promotional appearances.

The group, already stars in Europe and experiencing a surge here in the U.S., were heralded in the current issue of Rolling Stone as a “New Artist to Watch,” and hailed in a recent Wall Street Journal feature as possibly “the next Buena Vista Social Club”. Despite this, the duo has been unable to gain entrance into the U.S, forcing the cancellation of sold out concerts and a marquee slot at the world’s largest music industry conference, South By Southwest, in Austin, TX.

The State Department has said the process to review the visa might take upwards of three months. The U.S embassy in Mexico City cannot approve Rodrigo’s P-1 Entertainer Visa until it receives confirmation that he is not an individual with a similar name who is barred from receiving a visa, this despite the fact that Rodrigo has entered and exited the U.S. without any problem in the last nine months.

“I feel frustrated because we wanted to play to our fans in the states, we have had a great response from them and from the media too.” says Rodrigo. “I feel bad for our American label, ATO Records, they have been doing a great job and this has forced them to relocate their energies towards something that has nothing to do with the music industry. I have met some others musicians from different parts of the world that have, unfortunately, been through the same situation when they were about to start their tour in the States. This is nothing to do with being Latin or Arab or from wherever. This is a policy that some have chosen to support, these are internal security measure issues that have to be resolved by Americans themselves. We hope to be back into the States as soon as I'm cleared to do so and keep contributing to society by sharing music and our time with people and reinforcing the importance that art and culture have, have had and will have to all of us while we are alive.”

This news comes at an unfortunate and critical time for the band, as the duo is gaining major momentum and attention behind their debut American release. “The excitement and energy associated with Rod and Gab since the release of this record has been phenomenal,” said Chris Tetzeli, ATO Records’ Founding Partner. “These two acoustic guitar players that used to busk on the streets of Dublin a few years ago have been making quite an impact in our country with their genre breaking music. Now, just as we were about to launch into their first major US touring cycle accompanied by the release of their first video and a new single on radio, we have to slam on all the brakes. It is unfortunate to see this setback happen to a great record and a brilliant live act. We really felt this was getting ready to take off and we hope the situation can be resolved quickly."

Since its U.S. release on October 3, 2006, “Rodrigo y Gabriela” has shipped over 100,000 records. The band's debut US release was heralded by Billboard Magazine as "One of the best guitar albums in ages; one of the best discs of the year". Their music has received national radio airplay, critical acclaim, and national press attention. The group has performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela scheduled American dates:

03.17 | Atlanta, GA | The 5 Spot - CANCELLED
03.18 | Nashville, TN | 3rd & Lindsay - CANCELLED
03.20 | Washington, DC | Grosvenor Auditorium POSTPONED

Damn the man, they're just secretly trying to stop Bonnaroo. Next thing you know Sting will be denied his visa & Xavier Rudd will get stopped at the airport. It's a conspiracy, clearly a conspiracy.

Seriously though, that sucks. These two can play.

These two are where Kaki King meets Esteban and it is unfortunate that the country will be denied their acoustic virtuosity, but we've all seen Desperado and we know what kind of a threat guitar-slinging Mexicans represent. This is a necessary move in the ongoing fight against terrorism. We can never be too careful in this "global world".

Bravo Homeland Security. I feel so much safer now that two more brown eyed guitar virtuosos have been denied access to our country. While were on a roll with the war on terror somebody should let King Bush-Allah know that those kids selling Chicklets down on the border might be dealing in C4 plastic explosives.

Never heard of these two before today.....I checked out their site and find them to be very talented. Truly our loss.

Thanks for shedding some light on the situation--such a bummer. I was really looking forward to their slot at langerado, but when i got to the tent, i was somewhat confused and certainly disappointed to find a bunch of Rober Randolph wannabees on stage.

Bullshit, I say!

I've never heard these guys play but the scenario is total bullshit. These guys clearly are not plotting the next attack on america. Shame to see talent be denied entry into our country just because of their name. Anybody remember a couple years ago Cat Stevens (Yusef Islam) was stopped in a london airport and was not allowed to enter the US because his name showed up on a terror list somewhere. Everyone jump upon the peace train.

Rodrigo and Gabriela are two fast-fingered, Dublin-based, Mexicans with a unique sound created on acoustic guitars. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both world and rock, and often imbued with the timeless Hispano classical influences. The fire in it comes from their life-long passion for metal music. Rodrigo is a deft finger-picker who can move from raging speed to sensual soul in the space of a fret, while Gabriela employs fast, rhythmic techniques. Her percussionist’s thrashing of strings and drumming of the instrument’s body inevitably raises comparisons with flamenco which they acknowledge as an influence but swerve as a pigeonhole, The duo’s repertoire flies beyond familiar Latin folk guitarists’ styles because of the metal connection: their reworkings of Led Zep’s Stairway To Heaven and Metallica’s Orion are musts, and the presence. On Ixtapa , of the fiery Hungarian gypsy violinist, Roby Lakatos, is inspirational.

Check out their new CD/DVD it's Absolutely incredible work, and well worth the price.

These guys are a perfect example of bureacracy (however the fuck you spell it.) Due to illegal immigration, a Mexican ID is absolutely worthless, and there is no common sense to clear up this problem. As for Cat Stevens, he's donated money to some pretty hardline Muslim charities. No sense in a US tour that funds our killers.

this is just how close-minded our gov't has become since all this republican laced paranoia has been forced down our throats beginning on 9/12/01 -- it's very disturbing that 90% of the highjackers were from saudi arabia & nothing was done about that fact -- also, has anyone noticed the ass-w-hole & his posse of on the corporate-board flunkies do not mention osama bin laden's name anymore in public -- get out & vote people -- or else this is what we get -- BTW -- rodrigo & gabriela's self titled debut release is awesome -- check it out -- they can play!!!!! -- just not in america - yet!
