Back on March 17, 1970 the Grateful Dead held a concert at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, New York during which they performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. A recording of the collaboration has never surfaced, and one well-known Deadhead has placed a $500 reward for anyone who produces a tape of the concert.

As noted by The Buffalo News, a tweet sent by the BPO set off a string of responses, including one by Deadhead Michael Caputo who is a well-known radio personality and public relations operative recently associated with the Donald Trump campaign. Caputo at first claimed to have heard the St. Patrick’s Day show in Buffalo, but later corrected his error and offered $500 for tapes of the show.

The evening featured the Dead lineup of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart and the BPO with musical director Lukas Foss. According to The Buffalo News the Dead were a last minute replacement for the The Byrds and the show featured a drums sequence with The Rhythm Devils joined by BPO percussionist Lynn Harbold. Pigpen also reportedly led a rousing rendition of “Turn On Your Lovelight” and the band’s epic “Dark Star” was performed as well.

Head to The Buffalo News to read additional insights from Caputo and others at the show in 1970. More on the concert can be found via The Dead Blog and if you have the tape get in contact with Caputo here.
