Phil Lesh To Be Joined By Members Of Phish, Joe Russo & More At Lockn’

As reported, Phil Lesh will play two sets at this year’s Lockn’ Festival which will be held August 25 – 28 at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Virginia. Today the lineups for each performance have been revealed.

In an interview with Chicago Now, Lockn’ co-creator Peter Shapiro announced the Saturday, August 27 set will find Lesh aided by Phish drummer Jon Fishman and Phish keyboardist Page McConnell as well as drummer Joe Russo and The Infamous Stringdusters. Can you ask for a better two-drummer attack than Fish and Russo? On Sunday, August 28 Lesh will perform with the Chris Robinson Brotherhood with a special guest spot from Gary Clark Jr..

So, why not Trey? Here’s how Chicago Now explains Shapiro’s response to just that question:

While I did directly ask about it, I did not get a direct response. “A lot of special guests and intricacies are being finalized behind the scenes still,” Shapiro said. I creepily paused for too long to be comfortable hoping he would spill his guts, but the guy is a pro. We’ll just have to see what happens in a couple weeks in Arrington.

Shapiro – who runs Relix, Brooklyn Bowl, The Capitol Theatre and other ventures – discussed the connection between last summer’s Fare Thee Well shows he helped put together and this year’s Lockn’, “The people who love the Dead. There were shows at every Chicago venue of bands playing Dead music, artists sold their grateful art outside the shows,…everyone kind of created new life out of it. It just is such a big community, full of great people. Bringing everyone together is what we’re gonna do again at LOCKN’. That, along with the integration of Trey, Phish, and the Dead world…it’s just never been done at a festival like this. That whole thing from last summer’s gonna happen again, a year later. Phish is headlining two nights, and are surrounded by tons of Dead music. In fact, this will be the first time since Fare Thee Well that members from Phish will play with members from the Dead, and we’re really excited about that too.”
