By Andy Kahn Feb 20, 2016 • 7:25 am PST
Guitarist Warren Haynes and his Ashes & Dust Band featuring members of ChessBoxer and drummer Jeff Sipe continued their run of shows through Texas with stop last night at Emo’s in Austin. Longtime Haynes collaborator guitarist Gordie Johnson sat-in with the group of musicians during the show’s two-song encore.
Haynes and crew started the show with The Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica” ahead a performance of the Ashes & Dust opening track “Is It Me Or You” and Warren’s Jerry Garcia tribute, “Patchwork Quilt.” The rest of the set mixed songs from Ashes & Dust such as “Company Man,” “Coal Tattoo,” “Stranded In Self-Pity” and “Wanderlust” with covers like The Band’s “Ophelia” and Little Feat’s “Skin It Back” and a pairing of Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun” within a performance of the ABB’s “Instrumental Illness.”
After the Allman’s “Blue Sky” closed out the main set, guitarist Gordie Johnson of the band Big Sugar was brought out for the encore. Johnson – who produced multiple Gov’t Mule albums – helped out on Bob Dylan and The Band’s “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” and the traditional “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” to close out the show.
The tour continues tonight in Texas at House of Blues in Houston.
