Sleepy Vikings had only been together for two months when we were offered our first show… with the Vivian Girls. We were excited, terrified, and about four songs short of a full setlist. We accepted the show and spent two weeks frantically writing and having nightmares about the Vivian Girls laughing at us.
Instead of laughing, though, they Tweeted. About us! Sleepy Vikings, a six-piece band from Tampa, Florida, is now famous on Twitter! This started a trail of shows & press that led us to places like Toronto (for North by Northeast) and Athens GA (for Popfest). It also led us to Twitter where we created an account… which we're still trying to learn how to use.
You want to know more about Sleepy Vikings, you say? Excellent. We're five girls and one boy who play indie rock that has been dubbed "southern shoegaze," which I guess is a nod to our country roots & our delay-heavy guitar sound. Paste Magazine has claimed our shows are filled with "song after song of rich southern shoe-gazey goodness," which we won't argue with. Orlando Weekly says that our music is a "swooning squall…" and that we are "one of the most talented and distinctive groups in Florida, and a band you need to know now."
Sleepy Vikings have already played shows with bands as diverse/awesome as Deer Tick, Mission of Burma, Dead Confederate, Vivian Girls, and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. We were named as one of the four best artists (out of 650, including Iggy Pop?!?!) at NXNE by Paste Magazine. Our future shows include dates with School of Seven Bells and a trip to CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, and we're currently booking shows across the southeast. We are currently mixing our first full-length record that is slated for release in early 2011.
To end with an equation, Pavement + Sonic Youth + hick towns + beer + summer sadness = Sleepy Vikings.
