JAKA is a World Beat dance band based in Santa Fe, NM. Described as Rusted Root and Mickey Hart meet African artists King Sunny Ade', Johhny Clegg and Thomas Mapfumo, the group has a driving percussive sound with bright, soaring melodies.
Touring consistently through the West, their highly original, relentlessly upbeat sound has garnered an eclectic fanbase. Spanning the spectrum from the hippie jam festival scene to the culturally-oriented performing arts arena to universities and even elementary schools, a Jaka performance appeals to all audiences.
Jaka's live show is a joyful and energy-packed event that brings any audience to their feet, be it for ecstatic dance or standing ovations. The band's polyrhythmic, exciting sound is a rich brew of the ancient mbira traditions of Zimbabwe and the joyous sounds of South African party music, spiced with Western funk, played on beautiful homemade marimbas at incredible speeds.
Jaka has been twice-honored by being voted "Best Band" in the entertainment weekly of Santa Fe, NM. The band has played at such events as the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Strings in the Mountains, High Sierra Music Festival, Zimbabwean Music Festival, Bob Marley Festival and Taos Solar Music Festival as well as supporting acts including The Wailers, Merl Saunders, Toots & the Maytals, Babatunde Olatunji, Yellowman and Stella Chiweshe.
