Hobex “HOBEX returns with Enlightened Soul, a 10-track corker that draws from summery pop, Philly soul, the world weary wisdom of Donny Hathaway & Bill Withers, and even '70s California country rock.” Dennis Cook, HONEST TUNE MAGAZINE - Spring '07

2007 - North Carolina Funk'n'Soul band HOBEX returns with "Enlightened Soul" on Phrex Records. Vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Greg Humphreys, bassist Andy Ware, drummer Dustin Clifford, and keyboardist Russ Betenbaugh meld classic funk'n'soul music with rock'n'roll; think Marvin, Curtis, Aretha, Otis, and the JBs meet the Beatles or Hendrix for a jam session. Fans have described their sound as "Soulternative music" or "Alt.Soul" - southern rock'n'roll spirit infused with the funky soul grooves of Memphis, New Orleans, and Motown.

"The Hardest Workin' Soul Band in the Land" has earned its reputation as a sparkplug of the southern soul revival, performing over 1000 shows since the mid-90s. They have shared the stage frequently with friends The North Mississippi Allstars and MOFRO, as well as musical legends Al Kooper, Bernie Worrell (Talking Heads, P- Funk), George Porter Jr. (The Meters), and Fred Wesley (James Brown, The JBs). In recent years, the band has been a staple at music festivals such as High Sierra Festival, Shakori Hills, and South by Southwest.

Live HOBEX radio interviews and performances include World Cafe, Mountain Stage, and Sirius Satellite Radio. They have been embraced by radio stations like WNCW and WFUV and scored a top ten hit on North Carolina’s top 40 station G105 through listener requests. HOBEX music also appeared in the late '90s film "Rounders". In 2006, HOBEX backed up Squirrel Nut Zippers vocalist Katharine Whalen on tour and radio dates supporting her solo release, "Dirty Little Secret". Enlightened Soul is the 6th CD release for HOBEX, with previous releases on labels Slash/London, Tone-cool, and Phrex Records. 2007 has also seen the release of the band's first live DVD, "HOBEX Live at The Pour House Music Hall 2/10/07" - available at live shows and HOBEX.com.
