There are few places New York City based singer/songwriter Derek James hasnt been. From his first live performance in Australia, hes paved his way from the streets of Southern France to the swanky bar of Manhattans Trump Tower. His music encompasses his experiences, and his experiences have been anything but ordinary.
Stray, James debut album was written in the basement of a familys home in the suburbs of New York, where he worked as a live-in nanny. As eclectic as the places hes lived are the jobs hes held to survive. You name it, hes probably done it James worked as an editor of bar mitzvahs and weddings videos, sold spa packages, and passed out bottled water at mallsto name a few. But hes worked his way up, both as a young man living in New York and an aspiring musician.
James was recently a finalist in the Williamsburg 2005 singer/songwriter competition. James has worked with talents Nir Z (John Mayer, Genesis) and Godfrey Diamond (Aerosmith, Lou Reed) and now makes his local rounds at NYC premiere venues such as the Knitting Factory, Pianos, and Rothko. With a consistently growing buzz and offers on the table, hes now able to prosper from his first love: music.
