Dirty Dozen Brass Band :: 02.07.07 :: Gottrocks :: Greenville, SC

DDBB - Efrem Towns :: 02.07
After a long absence from Greenville, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band rolled back into town to play at Gottrocks, one of South Carolina's best clubs, with their good friends, The Work.

The night kicked off with a short set by The Work featuring a fine blend of jazz, Southern rock, funk, Americana, and blues. They really got the crowd primed for the Dozen, who kicked off a long first set with that seriously lowdown jazz-funk that they're famous for. Knowing that two members of The Work were celebrating their birthdays that night, the DDBB kicked the set into high gear and laid down some heavy funk that got the feet of nearly everyone in the place moving. The whole set was an unending energetic wave that ended with a Mardi Gras style "When the Saints Go Marching In" with Craig Sorrels of The Work adding his trumpet to the mix.

DDBB :: 02.07
If everybody thought the first two hours couldn't be topped they were wrong. The second set started off slower and deeper with The Work's Mitch Towles and Charles Hedgepath lending a hand on guitar. The momentum built as Sorrels rejoined the Dirty Dozen, leading up to a funky NOLA version of "Happy Birthday." They carried on with Funkadelic's "Red Hot Mamma," Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious," and Little Feat's "Feet Don't Fail Me Now." The evening ended with a stellar version of "Dirty Old Man" that left everyone calling out for more of that dirty NOLA brass.

These cats are nuts. I caught them in Macon, GA where they played for a crowd of about 40 or 50. Dirty really means fuckin dirty. I overheard from one of the girls they got on stage what they said to her... definitely not dinnertime conversation. They tried so hard to get some of my girl friends back to their tour bus after the show.

It was a good show, though. I think a better crowd would have made for a better show. They might have tried harder to play well rather than to get some poontang.

I really don't understand what purpose this article serves? This article really says nothing besides it was a high energy show and that there were Mardi Gras elements...jee wiz who would have associated those two things with DDBB? Give me some depth!

The Work and DDBB-Wow! I love the small venue close atmosphere of Gottrocks, too. I've been going to see The Work there for years and they are sick!! And of course, DDBB is always nasty!

The Work are alright, but they pissed me off at the "Jerry Bithday Bash" they threw at the Handlebar this year. If your going to cover Dead tunes please at least know half of the words, I know Jerry forgot a line or two but damn give me a break! Hate I missed this show though, last time I saw DDBB in town was with Nort Mississippi at the Handlebar...good show that night too
