Burning Spear with Umphrey's McGee
Jam Cruise 2007 by Dave Vann
There is nothing like Jam Cruise. It's High Sierra meets Jazz Fest on a luxury cruise line in the Caribbean. A sense of freedom permeates everything that happens, and the party never ends. You wanna ask Skerik how the hell he makes all that noise? Go for it. There's no backstage and no barrier between what you want and what you get. Feel the need to get front row and give Ivan Neville a high-five after he crushes the keys? Done.

Every year Jam Cruise gets better, and number five would be the best yet. With three full days at sea and port stops at the islands of Turks and Caicos and Cayo Levantado, a private island off the Dominican Republic, Jam Cruise is a musical paradise worth every penny.

The fact that everyone lives on the boat, there are no cabs to catch or hotels to run off to, allows for once-in-a-lifetime collaborations to take place at any given moment. Where else are you gonna see Burning Spear sit in with Umphrey's McGee? Or how about Luther Dickinson playing drums with Patterson Hood? Brock Butler sitting in with The Disco Biscuits, Steve Kimock with ALO, John Morgan Kimock with George Porter Jr. and Trevor Garrod, JJ Grey with Galactic, JamBase's own SuperDee playing violin with Perpetual Groove, or the specially formed Garage a Benevento? It's all happening all the time on Jam Cruise.

There were psychedelic Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin covers, all star Grateful Dead tributes, Brock Butler leading PGroove through "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin' to Fuck With" > "Samson Rap" > "Rhymin' and Stealin'" (better than you would ever think) and The Disco Biscuits killing "Paul Revere." The highlights go on-and-on-and-on. Instead of trying cover five days of bliss on the boat we've gathered some of favorite artists' and associates' Top 3 Moments to help tell the tale of our little party on Jam Cruise 5.
