'07 ROCK HALL OF FAME

Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) by Tony Stack
The new class of Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees was announced today, with a ceremony set for March 12 at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The Rock Hall Foundation's President and C.E.O., Joel Peresman, in a statement, said, "We couldn't be more proud to honor this unique, diverse group of rockers, rappers, singers and poets. This is what rock and roll is all about."

Selected by the 600 voters of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Foundation the five new inductees include:

  • R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe)
  • The Ronettes (Estelle Bennett, Ronnie Spector, Nedra Talley)
  • Patti Smith
  • Van Halen (Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth)
  • Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (Kid Creole, Cowboy, Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Mr. Ness, Raheim)

Inductees became eligible for the Hall 25 years after their first recording was released, and in addition to the ceremony they will be the focus of a multi-media career overview to go on exhibit in March at Cleveland's Rock Hall Museum.

Even though David Lee Roth was a total d-bag, I still think he should be the only lead singer to be inducted. Van Halen sucked after Sammy Hagar joined the band. Wasn't there a third guy too (Gary Cherone?). I dunno, anyway, I agree that these inductees are kinda weak.

Still no Prog Rock bands in the Hall of Fame! How can R.E.M. get inducted before Genesis, Yes, Rush, or Jethro Tull?!? It's a travesty!

Im glad to see Grandmaster Flash get a nod... one of the godfathers of hip hop music, and while it has evolved into something pretty poor, hip hop was founded and showed lots of promise for a while... van halen is eh, but eddie can undoubtedly shred... the ronnettes are dope, fuck what ya heard... and yeah, R.E.M., I can do without, but they wrote some huge songs...

Wait...Yes isn't in the Hall of Fame? What kind of lousy voters puts R.E.M. into the Hall before Yes?

No Jethro Tull!? It is clear that the Rock Hall of Fame is not the ultimate authority, or there would be more prog bands than simply Pink Floyd! After hearing that, I checked to see if even Led Zeppelin was on (thank god they are).

Van Halen definitely deserved a spot. They're one of the biggest rock bands of all time. Not to mention their huge influence on so many rock bands that came after them. i dont think hagar or cherone should be counted though...post roth van halen blew pretty bad.

maybe you guys are too young to remember, but Van Halen kicked ass before Davil Lee's ego went berzerko and Eddie kind of lost it with drugs. Early 80's VH concerts were pure rocknroll badass melt your face. It's a shame they bitched out when Sammy came along.
Oh yeah, and R.E.M. is nerd rock. Well, actually Pavement is nerd rock. R.E.M. is limp dick rock. I'm sorry, had to say it.

I agree 1000% (not a typo) with DiscoRockStar. The *only* artist in the Crock & Roll Hall of $$$$ from prog-rock is Pink Floyd! Plus, add King Crimson and Genesis to that list (rememeber, before Genesis went pop, they were a superb prog-rock band!). As far as other artists omitted, where are The Guess Who (The first big Canadian band!) and Deep Purple? Then again, the Crock lost my support for good after The Sex Pistols -- THE most overrated band in music history, bar none! -- were chosen. It's all about certain record exec fatcats & their friends, and not about art itself.

    Folks -

This is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Friends of Jann Wenner. It's a joke. Pay no attention to this event.

The Rock Hall is for the most part is pretty lame, they do have some cool stuff there though, Jerrys Rosebud & Lightning Bolt guitars by Doug Irwin(the only things in the whole place youre actually allowed to photograph). But I gotta say that as a Northeast Ohioan it burns me that every year the big inductee ceremony and concert is held, not in Cleveland wherethe Rock Hall is, but in New York. Lame Lame Lame.I did see Derek Trucks Band there a couple years ago though. Oh yeah, the section with Brittany Spears and Backstreet Boys costumes is one of the biggest displays.

Maybe they should quit the idea of an "annual class" as there clearly is a dilution of the talent pool and all good rockers are in there. To think that Grand master Flash and the Ronnettes are "what rock is all about." Give me a break. Not to mention the building is too small for all of the stuff they have in there anyway!

don't know the Ronettes, grandmaster flash is not rock n' roll, and REM are OK but not h.o.f. material yet. i'll give it up to Van Halen and i guess patti smith (not sure what she's done either). What about the Allman Brothers Band, they better be there. I agree that Yes and Rush both should be there before REM or VH. Is The Band there too? i'll be pissed if they aren't.

Cliftonhanger now it makes so much more sense. I can completely see why your such a tard in your other posts.

What are you like 17? 19? You dont know who these people are and havent heard there music yet you seem to feel like you are a bastion of musical knowledge.

How about try and learn some more? Youd be doing a favor for all. Maybe instead of wasting your time posting that you dont know an artists work, you could use your computer to go seek some out. Crazy idea I know. But I am sure that you will find using your computer to gain knowledge can be just as fun as using it to muddle the collective knowledge of others.

REM - sweet, and for all you haters, they write some excellent songs, unlike most jambands outside of the Dead (and I love jambands). They are very deserving of their spot.

So is van halen, even if i don't really like their stuff.

But Patti Smith? The Ronnettes? Grandmaster Flash? No way. Way too many more deserving groups.

Let us not forget that Rolling Stone magazine ranked their first album 'Murmur' album of the year over MJ's 'Thriller' and the Police's 'Syncronicity' in '82. Despite how you might feel about those other albums that was a huge deal at the time. REM was the greatest band on the planet from '80-88. No one wrote better social & political songs than they did at that time. Sadly when they switched from IRS Records to Warner Bros everything went to hell in the name of "reinvention". They never should've tried pop music but are deserving of this honor none the less.

    dear whoknowswhy,
I am not really sure why you feel the need to say such hurtful things. First off, it wasnt like cliftonhanger was saying any of those bands are bad. Second off, who died and made you king. Believe me, the world is a better place when all this negativity is dropped.

who knows why there are so many f-ing a-holes in the world? do u have an opinion about anything "whoknowswhy" or u just on her to be an a-hole? r u the expert on the ronnettes? is grandmaster flash rock? then f-u. i was probably seeing shows while u were in diapers. now you're probably in college living off mommy and daddy thinking u the shit. i've been to the rock n' roll hall of fame twice and it's all right, but i don't think they should put just anyone in there. there's a lot of cheese there though, like britney spears and new kids on the block garbage. these posts are about having opinions, not being an a-hole. you're the type we want to stay away from shows, while the rest of us dance and have a good time. same goes for your frat brothers.
