Strange Design: Tour/Phish Tix

Strange Design Phish Tix Giveaway and Spring Tour Dates

Strange Design
A new study released this week has revealed that plenty of Phish is a necessary part of a well-balanced musical diet. This should come as little surprise, as the Vermont-based foursome is protein-packed and easily-digestible, providing listeners with their much-needed aural nutrients. But with the demand for tickets vastly outnumbering the supply, many fans are poised to be Phish deficient this summer.

South Carolinian quartet Strange Design hopes to help rectify this situation for two lucky fans. From now until May 10, fans can sign up for a chance to win two tickets to see Phish on June 7 at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ. To sign up, simply go to and click on the ticket giveaway link and follow the instructions. Additional signups can also be made at any Strange Design performance between now and then.

For those in desperate need of a hearty Phish supplement, Strange Design offers fans an opportunity to hear their favorite shows performed live in their entirety. Much like the way in which Dark Star Orchestra performs sets from the expansive Grateful Dead catalogue, Strange Design performs entire shows from the first twenty years of Phish's career. This approach has helped set them apart from other Phish tribute acts and garnered them critical praise: "This is not a band that plays its fourteen favorite Phish covers -- they study and re-enact full concerts from an era when the band was the most dynamic force in live improvisational music...This is a band that makes it alright to admit you were a Phish die-hard, and will probably leave you recounting your favorite tour stories to complete strangers after the encore..." (Nick Levy, The Brooklyn Revue).

Strange Design strives to reconnect the dispersed Phish community by taking show requests from fans, including all the extra-musical components that made Phish unique (trampolines, vacuum solos, choreographed dances, etc), traveling with a full light show, and recreating the energy, sound, and improvisational spirit of the different eras in Phish's career. In short, they want fans to relive the complete Phish concert experience in the intimacy of smaller clubs and music halls close to their doorstep.

You mean bands that took other peoples tunes and got notariaty playing them and then slid in their own music gradually. Yeah like The Grateful Dead, Phish, Allman's. Yeah there are 3 cover bands that really suck. Do your homework before you spout off people-------strange Design is a great way to spend an evening. Most Jambands start covering or reworking other artists music--what a concept. Original or cover it is about the energy you send out and my guess is these other dudes find fault in everything they do not understand. Way to SD-----Groove On, Dicky

"What the world needs now, is another cover band, like I need a whole in my head."

That was an original line, you made that up yourself and didn't "cover" it from another band. The bottom line is that these guys are great musicians and if you're so close minded to not check them out because they are a cover band, then you are the one who is missing out. If you are a fan of phish, you need to go check these guys out the next time they come around your neck of the woods.

Oh yeah man, these guys are a ton of fun if you like Phish. I just caught a show on their last tour. What makes them better than your average cover band? They play real shows from certain dates in the past, and they play their show in the same mood as was captured by Phish on that very evening. If you can't go to Phenway, SPAC, Great Woods, then go see SD.

Beach boys are amazing you kidding me? Ask Trey what he thinks about Brian Wilson sometime. I'm not sure how anyone can hate on Phish music, original or covered. I play covers on my acoustic and no one seems to care.

Uncle Jesse and the Rippers... If only there were a tribute band for them, recreating performances from scenes of Full House.

I don't know if you haters have ever seen these guys, but they are really good. I saw them during the haitus, and it was a great time, and filled a big void. I don't think that there is any reason to be hatin on these guys or DSO or anybody else. If you don't like it, you don't have to go. I like original music too, but it is great to hear some Phish tunes in between tours

Not hating, but its def a little odd that they will be touring while phish is...... they should prob just try to maybe add another guitar player (for the time being) and become what no one has ever done, be a full on jamband cover band... play phish, dead, (mix it up with phil style) umph, mule, Moe, bisco, cheese, toss in MMW jams, some classic rock, whoever else they can think of, a little of their own stuff...... people would def pay to see that.... Help--> slip--> fire--> fire-->

That'd be awfully ambitious, Josh. If you've got the chops to nail down all that stuff, you might as well be laying down your own original material that combines all of those musical varieties into some cool ass shit. Personally, I see no problem with cover bands. They are what they are. All I know is if it's a Friday like today and I've got nothing to do, and a Phish cover band about whom I've heard great things is playing near me for a casual 14 bucks, I'm going. And of course, the McLovins are the shiznit as well.

They don't play when Phish is touring. Their tour stop, before Phish's starts. During that time they work on original music

I'm going to see them for the second time at Sullivan Hall tonight. You gotta catch the McLovin's before though. good stuff.

also, not sure if anyone talked about SD's lighting rid. It's no Hampton's but its makes for a great vibe in the smaller rooms.

-I meant.... Its weird they are a touring at all while phish is touring.... generally, not actually on tour....

-Not neccessarily, some people are really good at playing but cant write their own good stuff.... hell look at bands like lotus, Kimock band or sts9... they cant even write lyrics

-In answer to the phix vs SD ?.... Basically SD is super serious up there, trying really hard not to mess up at all and I think it affects their jams a little. Also staying in the setlist framework limits them slightly, while Phix is a little more loosey goosey with it jam wise and setlist wise. I think phix is all around better muscians , you can kinda tell that SD's Bass doesnt play at all like mike when he is playing his own stuff. All in all I think its cool to see them both..... when phish is not around

I thought this was some special design tix that were made for Phish shows. I have to say that even though some of you hate on tribute bands, not all of them are horrible. Australian Pink Floyd are amazing and put on a spactacular show and really keep that Floyd spirit going. Their shows are always sold-out and they travel around the world to packed arenas. For crying out loud, they sold out 3 nights in UTAH, yes UTAH, at this Hockey Arena. DSO is also the shit and definitely keep the spirit going as well. I love them both, especially since both original bands are no more, even though we have the DEAD, it's still not the Grateful Dead. Besides these couple bands, the rest of them, including these guys need to just create their own music, I can't stand somebody making money the easy way by playing somebody elses music. Even though they might sound good, I don't care, if some Major artist is still touring and making music, then why the hell is their a cover band touring the country. It's no different than some Britany Spears cover artist.

A group of degreed jazz musicians recreating old school high energy Phish shows in small clubs is nothing at all like a Brittnay Spears cover band.
