okay... first off, HWP... do you really think that any of these guys need any more money? I bet they are making a fortune just from their CD sales still... They are obviously going to tour together for the fun of it and because their fans want it... they dont need any more money, I can assure you of that... Allman brothers are touring this year, the dead maybe, I am assuming that govt mule will not be touring if warren is with the dead and allman? Jimmy herring will be busy with WSP... It will be interesting to see if they can make this all come together...

Realistically they don't kill it with CD sales. They do better with dicks picks because it is their label. Anything you buy on Arista or Rhino yields the band much less in profit than what you buy from There are a lot of mouths to feed in that family. That money doesn't go that far.

You guys are right, this tour is going to be all about the money. Whats next, we have to pay to be in attendance? Give me I cant wait until Twisted Sister comes back this summer, theres a band that plays for the love of playing, not these greedy old hippies who just play to sell stuffed bears

Hell Yes!!!! I'll be 18 next summer so obviously I'm too young to have seen the Dead with Jerry or even Phish, but I'll tell you guys something: it makes absolutely no difference what any of you say because I will be following these guys around like various friends and family members before me. Say what you will about the "magic" being gone with the Dead, but it just gives young folk like me a chance to see something I've wanted to see since getting into this music almost 10 years ago. It would make it a lot easier if they'd come to Canada though...

What is wrong with some of you? The Dead are in it for the money??? HWP you're an idiot for being the first to say it and everyone else who agreed with him is an even bigger idiot. We're talking about a band who was one of if not the biggest touring bands for almost 30 years straight. They nearly sold out arenas and huge ass venues! These guys are still rolling in the money. They're wanting to tour again because of their fans. Sure Ratdog and phil and friends is great but it's not the Dead. They all want to tour because they all want to play together and experience what they experienced back in the day. This is a band that has always played for the fans, have always had a huge fan fallowing because they cared about the fans, not the money. For all of you idiots that think they're in it for the money, you gotta get real, you obviously know nothing about the grateful dead and what they stood for.

This is great news I cannot wait for this tour!!

Good video. i hope they play with Kimock because Kimock is sick and I think his style and sound fit the dead about as well as anyone can hope for sans Jerry. I sure would like to hear some new tunes though. The new Robert Hunter/Rhythm Devils tracks debuted in '06 ("The Center", "Fountains of Wood") were awesome. I'd like to hear more of that rather than all nostalgia. For the record since it was posted to the contrary above. Mike just released new music, Trey has been writing and this past fall performed new music. I would expect Phish v3.0 to include plenty of new tunes and thus new energy.

In it for the money, not in it for the money, does it really make a difference? Come on, we all know that the dead aren't "sell outs" whatever that even means.

Lets make an example of me. I'm a massage therapist, I love my job and everything about it. I wouldn't rather do anything in the world, but make no mistake, I'm ultimately in it for the money. I simply would not perform my job in the same manner if money were not a factor. I love my trade, but I recognize it as a skill I've invested a lot of time and money into, and if it brings happiness, but at the same time brings in the bling, hey bonus. If it weren't for money, I'd still massage, but only when and where I want to. Just as I'm sure that if it weren't for money, most bands would still play music, because they love it, but I doubt they would as readily embrace all of the bullshyte of touring that you don't think; such as being on the road constantly, sleeping in RVs and hotels, never eating home cooked meals, and being away from your friends and family...and all of those things suck that much more when you're over fifty. So we all need to get over this black and white "in it for the money" concept. So what, they make a few bucks, and put smiles on thousands of adoring fans...sounds like a fair trade to me. I'd be willing to bet that 99 percent of the people on this website have a job that they do "just for the money"....I know if the dead come my way, I"ll gladly pay top dollar to hear them hash out old material, the dead are always more magical than any of the separate solo projects. Ok, rant over, merry christmas everyone...and Festivus for the rest of us...much love.

OaksterDan Wed 12/24/2008 09:45PM

Burdturd no Grateful Dead songs are played the same way twice which makes it easier to see old material. If you think Molo or Jay Lane by themselves is as good a Mickey & Billy together you need to lay off the crack pipe! Second the whole band is more sober and they listen to each other on stage more and give each other more space. Yes Jerry drug induced solo which were legendary are gone but 4 very accomplished musicians are left they didn't die. Phil Lesh is almost 70 years old & name me a better bass player please? I'm still waiting! Watch Festival Express where the Grateful Dead played free concerts and then tell me again there in it for the money.

Did anyone listen to that deadheads for obama show? It sounded WACK. I know that it was their first gig, and they are great musicians, but seriously if they can't get it together I would never follow this new/old dead. But, my hopes are HIGH and if they pull it together I will be too.

the dead will be better than ratdog and phil & friends put together because its the dead! and i love seeing both of those bands. but who cares whether or not they are playing new material, cuz its still the fuckin band. and they are playing in it. its good the four can still get together after everything that has happened over the years. im nostalgic about an era that i never lived through, and that energy is still alive at all their shows, within you without you. i miss jerry and i wish he was here. im pretty sure the dead feel the same way.

I went to a few DEAD shows there last run and the MAGIC was still there. Jack Straw from NYE (12/31/03) in Oakland had the magic when Mickey picked up the tempo. I was at the GD reunion in 2002 at Alpine Valley and the Casey Jones to close the first night first set was incredable as was the Franklin's Tower to close that show. I was also at Hartford civic center in 2002 when they played Knockin on Heaven's Door and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I was also at the Deadheads for Obama at the warfield and while the first set wasn't that great the third set went off the charts just listen to the crowd erupt toward the end of sugaree before the last verse. The magic may only come once a night but if you listen for it you will find it.

I think the truth about the money debate is somewhere in the middle. CD sales are at historic lows, I would not expect dividends from cd sales to provide income commensurate with the lifestyle they are accustomed to. I know that toward the end of Jerry's life the ranks of Dead employees and sundry hangers-on swelled to the vicinity of 200 souls- that's a lot of dough to cover. They said that Jerry felt torn between a personal responsibility to continue the Dead projects and provide income (and benefits) for these many people, while at the same time desiring a break and the opportunity to play acoustic material such as that with Grisman. For me personally, I saw them enough with Jerry that I generally (not always) pass on the newer iterations (my enjoyment was admittedly very Jerry-centric), but for folks like young Jonrand above, I say have a great time, stay safe, have adventures, meet kind folks, and wave that flag- I think it is cool that you mentioned friends and family who came before you- you sound like good people. I hope the fellas hunker down, get their chops sharp, and blow your minds. Same for Ernesto and Co.

I'm very surprised y'all are against Warren on lead. Who would do it? When they toured with Herring, it was a shoddy display. I'm 21 and it was my first encounter with any form of the band, and it was just literally depressing. Casey Jones was the only thing that sounded great. Everything else was just a funeral derge. I feel like Warren's got the chops and the energy to do justice. I'm all for anyone else who can do it. But who? I'm open to suggestions. And if anyone says Trey, I'll find you and injure you.

Steve Kimock is the only guitarist alive today that would make this band worth doing a tour with. No one else would do it for me. Unfortuately for the Dead...he's not going to be available because he's got his own thing going (finally!) with his band. Because of's going to be just another nostalgia trip for folks that need it. I don't really like ratdog or Phil and Friends for that same reason. Lead guitar is SO important in this music...and no one can do it RIGHT besides Kimock. Too bad...

Kimock or Barry Sless would be great, but Haynes can definitely hold it down!! He's a solid solid guitarist who knows his shit, and knows the Dead's music. Another rumor I heard is a Mr. Derek Trucks possibly being brought on board. That would be sick! Different but interesting

what i take away from that vid is that warren haynes will be the lead guitar on the dead 'reunion'. keyboard is obviously still up in the air, although i'd say barraco and molitz have to be considered the lead candidates. personally, i think hornsby would be the shiznit, but, hey, it's going to be fun one way or way or another...

Trucks rumour is just that . . . it will never happen. He's got brand new original music on a brand new studio disc that will be released in January and that will be pushed heavily by his MAJOR label and by them touring this year. Praise allah for that. At least someones got their priorities straight.

As different as he is, when I see Derek play, I do think of Jerry a bit; just something he has about him stylistically or soul-wise, not sure. I admire Warren tremendously as a player, and even more as a human, but for me, his Les Paul tone is simply too bright for my ears, almost shrill. I think Keller is more of a niche player and would not be able to range nearly as far. Scofield is a master but I'm not sure he would want to be fully associated with just the Dead for that long and he'd have to lay off straigh jazz and his beloved chorus pedal. SK would be a logical choice. The DSO dude would be ironic as hell, but workable.

What I came away from this video with was that a ton of folks never saw Jerry and want a taste of what the Dead has/had to offer... I'm glad the remaining members seem to be trying to be sensitive to those of us for whom Jerry was the key ingredient in the magical elixer.

Bottom line.....we get to go to another show!!! Yea, I miss Jerry, who doesn't. I'm sure the boys do too. They say so in the video. The Grateful Dead was my first show ever. What a way to start this long, strange trip. They are in a completely different category than other bands. As the late great Bill Graham once said "They are the only ones who do what they do." As far as the money aspect the first time I saw them $9.00. Like everything else prices go up. Nomemory I think you nailed it, who wants to do their job and not get paid. By the way if your going to the Philly shows I may need your services after two days of dancing my a** off.

The boys don't need the dough, they tour because they know it makes people happy. As far as the "MAGIC" of the Dead being gone, I was at Jones Beach Aug 9th, 2004 Ripple and I was at State College this past Oct Unbroken Chain for those of you who were there, need I say more? When the bus comes by I'll get on.

Happy Trails!!!
