Phish To Headline Bonnaroo?

Phish to Headline Bonnaroo 2009?

We've heard the rumor for months, and according to, it appears to be true: Phish look to be headlining the 2009 Bonnaroo event.

Set to go down in the same big field it always does from June 11-14, Bonnaroo won't release the lineup for at least a month, but has reported, "reliable sources close to Phish [say] that the band will top the bill for two nights, restoring the fest to its jam-friendly roots." Other big name acts being tossed around include a potential headline spot for Bruce Springsteen.

Check out our 2008 coverage of Bonnaroo here.

sooooooo funny all the phish snobs saying on the other board that anybody saying this just doesnt know phish very well. ha. i mean trey is cool w/ superfly, i remember the rumors b4 the first bonnaroo that phish would close out the fest instead of trey and end hiatus there. anyway that dig as deep as you want into this all it means is that they are playing bonnaroo. thats it. anyway hopefully they draw a cool crowd to this thing

Good idea on paper. Maine is a much more appropriate setting, Roo has gotten pretty sloppy as of late and this better be a well thought out attempt to "restore it to its jam roots" otherwise its just going to be a swarm of craziness and bad times. Good luck.

I love Phish, but I don't think this will help a struggling bonnaroo, because, WHO THE HELL HAS $1000 extra dollars to goto Bonnaroo(I include ticket/gas/expenses in that assumption)? With tickets being as high priced as they are, and Phish fans not being "big spenders" like fans of some other bands, I don't think this will fare too well for Bonnaroo. Anyone wanna bet---If it's Phish and Springstein, plus the high-priced tickets this year, will equal the SMALLEST BONNAROO TURN-OUT in the history of the fest. Not saying I want that to happen, but I think there is a really good chance that it will.

aww, c'mon! Limestone - I second that! I think this is all a bunch of fluff - no offense, jambase. back in the docu for The Great Went, Trey and the others recount how glad they were that, despite their nervousness, they'd asked thousands of fans to come out for JUST THEIR BAND. the whole point has always been that, by throwing a festival in a place as remote as Limestone, ME, you'll only get ppl who are truly passionate about the music to make the trip. headlining 'Roo, especially in light of the "breakup" being attributed in part to "scene" issues, seems like one of the absolute stupidest, most self-contradictory things the band could do at this point, especially so early in the reformation of their career. this will be an important summer for Phish, and in no way does this important summer need to see them performing on a stage only recently vacated by the overflown ego of Kanye West or some other talentless jackass Superfly is using to "diversify" their festival in order to reach a new "market segment."

All you pro-Phish but anti-Roo people are fools! All I ever hear on this site is "Phish, Phish, Phish...Oh how I owe my life to Phish." Now they MAY want to get together for a Roo show and it's like, "Oh, they've sold out. Booooo on Phish. Boooo on Roo. Go Rothbury!!" You guys are dorks. Seven years ago you were all about the Roo, and seven years from now you'll be saying "Boo Rothbury." You guys are all a bunch of cry babies and no band can ever do anything to make you happy. You've been whining about Phish all this time, well now you've got 'em. So sorry it doesn't fit your anti-commercial-festival-ever-changing-standards, but guess what? Phish has made more money than you ever will and IS therefore a complete commercial success! Make it off touring or make it off CDs and festivals, but it's still capitalism morons!

Never mind you whining fools. I'll appreciate the extra dancing room at Roo!

As much a I want to see Phish by themselves, how can you honestly complain about one of the greatest live acts ever reuniting despite the venue. Sure I have my complaints about Bonnaroo, I decided not to go last year because I disliked the line up and there were much better festies out there. But if there is an opportunity to see Phish for 2 nights along with a shitload of other bands like Umphreys, Tea Leaf, Allmans, Pgroove, Soulive, Claypool, Randolph or any other of the 'roo regulars, I'm sure as hell not gonna complain. Don't worry, if they do schedule some acts you don't like along with Phish you can always just walk away ... problem solved. If the rumors are true I'll be looking forward to being back on the farm in June.

I think what we are all missing out on is that a lot of people were willing to pay a lot of money to see phish in the hamptons, well bonnaroo is almost as much as some people paid to see them one day, personally i think this is a very egaltarian thing that they did because bonnaroo can support a lot of people coming, it will not sell out and a lot of people that got left out can see two phish shows, obviously it's kind of expensive but when i go to a major festival or any festival at all its a vacation and people spend money to go on vacation, and don't forget that if phish is the headliner maybe roo' is going back to its roots? how bout you guys wait and forget the criticism till the facts come out. i'm not going but can't see how this is a bad thing, this is the one phish show you won't have to buy scalped tickets for

There is no way that a true phan or festival lover would feel great about this. If anything this breaks my heart. Phish started the whole festival thing alone back in the 90s before it was the IT thing (no pun intended). To headline a festival such as bonnaroo, where the previous year Metallica and Kayne West headlined, would be lowering their standards. This will make a Bonnaroo that is full of stupid teenage fucks who think they wanna be hippies but just take a lot of drugs and are like YA MAN, PHISH !, when half of them didn't even start liking Phish till after they broke up. Lame.

Now Daft Punk would be one hell of a headliner.

i was a phan before i was born iw ent to my first show in my mothers belly and i truly wish and implore for phish and there fans to push for another PHISH IT as opposed to phish headlining the corporate funded and wasteful festival bonnoroo. i must say that it will be hard to ressist the urge to go to this show and see if it will sway the vibe of what some have called bonerzoo but i refuse to pay i think we should all refuse to pay because in my mind phish is the epitome of freedom and music should be free right? so my suggestion to the boys is for them to put on a FREE phish festival because we cannot achieve as group the pure freedom of thought with the drones of capitilism and expensive concert tickets rulling over us.

i am going to stay away from roo like always cause all i hear is bad things. and stick to the good fests like all good and rothbury.

i just hope phish will stay away from rothbury cause its too good of a fest to have it ruined by the phish kids that go to shows to party and not for the music

I am going to Bonnaroo whether Phish is there or not - maybe i will end up liking Phish - maybe not - but Bonnaroo will still be packed with all kinds of other great music.

For those of you that keep screaming ROTHBURY - hope there is one - because the Double JJ Ranch is still tied up in bankruptcy court and until they get out from under neath that - they cannot even think of contracting with music acts to play there.

You people mentioning String Cheese & Britney Spears in the same conversation as Phish should stop. Remember- Superfly/AC Entertainment also puts on Jazzfest at night which is a hell of a good time. I've had good times at the Roo and it has the potential to be cool again (with the right lineup). Stop with all the negativity already!!!

well i've been reading some posts and just kinda laughing. i think its great that people are very passionate about this band and their music i really am. I just dont get all the negativity really? i saw phish when i was in my mom womb, these people didnt like phish til after they broke up, i was there for every show in the 90s, it goes on and on. If someone falls into this band PHish today or tomorrow and really enjoys them and wants to see them is that a bad thing? would you loyal phish diehard fans not want to be seeing this band w/ these "new phans"? i know that their are plenty of wookies and trustafarians at show but why does this bands fans have to create this elite almost cult like following that wont accept anything different?

I've got a lot of people very close to me who truely LOVE Phish, LOVE them, but you their always trying to get new friends to enjoy the fun music they play. There isnt this elite mentallity that since you werent there before the breakup than your ass and you dont get it.

i like the comment someone had on here about the allman brothers band and how they didnt want to get labeled into the "jam scene" b/c this is the type of stuff you start to see.

Here's to good tunes from wherever they come from, whenever your lucky enought to hear them.

As for Bonnaroo i think the younger drunker crowd has taken this festy over back in 04 and it will never return to the way it started. Nor should it really, these things change, evolve and become what the people there make of it. If some 17 year old kid gets exposed to a band like Bela FLeck, or Baobab Orchestra, or Femi Kuti and it changes the way they look at music and people around them than shit i'm all for it. I just think that a lot of the older heads dont want to be there to witness all the BS associated w/ it though.

See everyone at High Sierra :)

Call me silly, but I don't understand the big deal with supposed fans of Phish getting irate about the band potentially playing one particular event. Would playing Bonnaroo mean there could be no tour-ending solofest of their own? If other people get to see the band in the context of a multi-act festival, would that somehow diminish the band's value? Or is it that lot rats who beg their way from show to show might find it a bit more difficult to afford a Roo ticket, and GOD KNOWS the world will come to an end if they miss just one show that the band plays?

Get a grip, folks. They're a band that plays for money and plays to tens of thousands of people for fun. What true harm can come from Phish playing Bonnaroo?

WAXTRAX-first off, BLOW ME. 2nd, Bonnaroo had it's smallest turnout EVER last year, and I don't think it was so much the line-up as it was the PRICE.(you may not know this, but we ARE in a financial crisis at the present time). I live in Chicago, and the other times I went to Bonnaroo(early years, last time 05) my ticket was right around $200, and with everything else, I spent just under a grand. If it was Roth, I would be excited, because it's only a 2 1/2 drive from home, and just an OVERALL better festival than Bonnaroo. plus, if you ever get the chance to go to either Roth or Roo, I think you would agree with me that EVERYTHING about Roth is 100% BETTER. it's a fact, Bonnaroo is quite possibly the least comfortable festival in the country.

So, after being a phish fan since I was 12 (i'm 26 now), I'v come to the conclusion that PHISH FANS HATE SPENDING MONEY. SO, at about $300 a ticket, plus everything else, I'm just saying bonnaroo better have MUCH more to offer this year, and let me ask you, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU, OR ANYONE YOU KNOW drove over an hour to see Bruce Springsstein? Yeah, that's right, nobody you can think of, huh? If Phish was only gonna play Hampton and Bonnaroo with no other dates in 09, I agree this would be close to a sell-out. BUT, if they are gonna tour the country in 09, why would you pay so that money to drive to tennessee? That's all I'm saying, " you fucking idiot".

Phish is doing this because they don't have a production crew anymore. Yes, a Limestone would be amazing, but there is no longer a business known as Phish that has the capabilities of putting it together. Get paid a couple million to just walk right in to Bonnaroo and play - why would Phish not jump at that? Besides, knowing that after they play that there's still 37 bands to play that night instead of huffing gas at the disco bus - sounds like a dream come true to me. If you think it sucks, DON'T COME.

Rothbury is happening. Investors are currently working to obtain the Ranch. (Rumor is AIG entertainment) Also the official website has added a 2009 tab. What does this mean? Who Knows? Its easy to speculate that the festival will have more 'radio play' acts. Honestly, Bonnaroo will be baller if Phish plays two nights... but Im probably just gonna head to summercamp and ofcourse Rothbury- Ive also heard Phish is playing five nights at Red Rocks end of July. Again Speculation, but a highly educated/involved resource :)

I don't mind this. I still might not go but I can understand why they are doing it. When they throw their own festivals it is an unbelivable amount of work. By playing Roo they can just go there, plug in and play. Also, I've heard that past Phish fests have cost upwards of 10 million dollars to put on and the net profits are only in the hundreds of thousands. I'm not saying they really care about the money, it's just soooo much easier.

i dont see phish putting on their own festival again. isnt that why phish came crashing down in the first place? because "phish" was getting too big? why put all the effort in to your own festival when you can just show up, play, and leave, and let others deal with the politics of a festival. i see nothing wrong with them playing bonnaroo. just gonna mean more shady people.

DG5-----You are correct sir!!!! R O T H B U R Y is happening. And the reason the sale of the ranch was blocked is because the local government and current owners will NOT let anyone buy it who isn't interested in having the fest again. it was a HUGE moneymaker for everyone within 50 miles of rothbury (gas stations/stores/restaurants), and they are going to MAKE SURE it happenes every year. Hey, the same thing(well, quite similar situation, without the land being sold) happened to Manchester Tennessee about 7 years ago.

I will agree that last year sucked ass that's why I didn't go. But what if they realized this and are making an effort to bring back the goods. Smokey, why are you so jealous of me? Is it cause your married to you fatass wife? And YOU are the one hating on "Corporations" not me, so just quit being a bitch and admit that Superfly IS A MAJOR CORPORATION. Let it set in, and then see if my, you or anyone actually gives a shit about it anyone cause YOUR THE ONE THAT BROUGHT IT UP. and also, other than a FAR BETTER LINE-UP, a big reason I choose Roth over Roo last year was that I felt I was getting my money's worth more than I was getting in Tennessee. ALSO, I think you can thank Rothbury for getting Phish on the Bonnaroo stage. What I mean is, 55000 people showed up at Roo last summer. 45000 showed up at Roth. Bonnaroo expects about 75-85000. Wow, where do you think those other 40000 people went last summer? can you say ROTHBURY. The Bonnaroo "crowd" from 02 and the Bonnaroo "crowd" from today are 2 different crowds. 40000 lost bonnaroo ticket sales HAD to influence superfly to wise up and try to get the CORE audience back. Now respond to that, phatso.

It's about the music and the vibes of love and beauty that emanate from that funky soulful music we love. There have always been douches at every show of every kind of scene and there always will be. Take a breath. Life is full of bummers, the point is to make the best out of life and all situations. I love you guys and gals, and hate to see you lash out at each other. Don't become what you hate, we are all guilty of it at times but don't let your emotions control the better part of you. Phish is cool and Bonnaroo is cool sometimes too. I have to agree with the overwhelming majority who thinks that Phish at bonaroo would be totally bunk. Anyone with 2 brain cells left knows that one night of phish at a cool place like the Gorge would kick the shit out of having to deal with the BS crowds at bonnaroo. If that's your thing dealing with the heat and overcrowding then go...enjoy! If you shelled out the $1200 for hampton tickets...if thats your thing..then go enjoy! You won't find me at either of these events due to the overwhelming hype, monatary costs, and sure to be bunk scene. I'm sorry. But in these days you got to pick and choose wisely unless your richie rich, which i'm not. Sweating my balls off at bonnaroo hasen't been on my to do list since that first year when i said to myself "i'm not coming back here. I like hotel rooms with air conditioning and hot tubs after a hot show." My days of being a dirty hippie in the mud are over. Just can't afford it anymore. What I can afford will be that 4 night run at the gorge with just people who are there to see phish and not to be "cool".

People who spend their whole year hyping up one festival and dogging another...what are you trying to prove? Do you have some sort of message for the rest of us? Or are you just trying to "prove" to everyone how much "cooler" you are than the rest of us.

Wow, you went to the inaugural year of a festival. That must have taken SO MUCH unique personality to pull off, I just don't know how you did it. I mean, how many people with $200 could have done what you did. Especially if they live in the Midwest.

You guys are just too awesome. When you've got the chance, could you please tell me the meaning of life? Pretty please.

why does jambase and everyone else believe rolling stone? They did post FAKE dates on their website about a month ago off rumors. So why believe this off rumors. Rolling stone needs to get facts straight before posting things like this. This is why no one believes in the media anymore.

It would be awesome if Phish went the the Up North Festival, check out, make a slightly smaller festival a whole lot bigger with that. Last year they had Ratdog, Soulive, Lettuce, Ryan Montbleau, Umphrey's, etc., but they also had The Everyone Orchestra with Fishman so maybe he'll put in a good word to the rest of the guys and they'll play it.

Okay. I haven't made many comments on articles but I had to make one here just to say how disappointing it is to read all of the things these people are saying. You beg, and beg, and beg for Phish and they finally come back. And then you complain about where they're gonna play? If I was Trey, John, Page, or Mike reading these shitty fucking comments you guys are leaving i'd forget about a reunion. Stop complaining. Its PHUCKING PHISH! And if you don't want to go to Bonaroo then DON'T GO! NO ONE WILL CARE!

Broesau....... How intelligent;I'm trying to hip you (And I mean you) to the fact that the energy dispensed on freaking out because Phish might try and retrieve some of the original essence of where Bonneroo began is positive, might be pretty cool after all and your entitlement is pretty lame. All these folks are flipping out and here is an alternative in thought. Righteousness has nothing to do with my assertion. Well, maybe it does to an extent if that was actually something that could be contemplated.... Actually, how cool would that be? Hummm.... Let me envision that. Trey reads this and says; "Eureka. Now that is something!" and follows through with it. What would you do for your favorite band?

Power can be wielded in all kinds of ways.

Ultimately; In the simplest of terms..... Enjoy live music wherever it is and I pray that it can bring you to the heights that evoke something positive in your own life and may it pro activate something more then where you head is now for all our sake

Well said, gammajamma, panicathome, djdaddyp. If this news does become official that only means that Bonnaroo sucks a little less. maybe the rest of the lineup will confirm this and it will be a major party, we'll just havta see. Count me in though, I'll go see Phish anywhere logistically possible. I'm not a Phish or nothing type of girl but i loves mes somes phish.

Chidodger - 1st - I have yet to pay $300 for a ticket to Bonnaroo - I would love to see where you came up with that price - I have been for the last 3 years and have never paid close to that even with the fees. Tickets this year for GA are the same price as last year $209.00.

2nd - If Rothbury happens - it will be a miracle. The bankruptcy judge still have to approve ANY sale of the property. last I checked - there was about $30 mil owed and the only offer they got was for a total of about $12 mil - that was for selling the majority of the ranch to one group but also splitting some of it between other groups.

3rd - there is NO way that Rothbury can manage to pull of a line up at this late point - at least not a stellar line up like last year . AC/Superfly and all the other management companies have been in negotiations with bands since summer 2008. Do you really think that Rothbury can pull it off when they have to have a Judge's approval - that may or may not happen and certainly will NOT happen until January. Then they only have 6 months to get their crap together. I just don't see it happening. If it did - it will be a much smaller fest then last year.

So Ive never seen Phish, except their half assed Rothbury half reunion whatever last year. This announcement doesn't necessarily affect me, I doubt Ill go back to Bonnaroo. But I love reading the reactions to such news. I understand the anti-roo sentiments, its a wierdo cracked out chaotic mess, but at the same time it is an amazing party and union of some of the best contemporary bands of all genres. Phish has a bigger following than pretty much any current band that I know of, so why don't you all just shut it, take out your wallets, buy a pre-sale ticket and rock the fuck out of bonnaroo & take it back in the name of what it was started for. You've got the numbers ... put em to use, make a difference. It's like the demi's taking back the white house ... PHISHIES TAKE BACK OL ROO!!!!!!

Although it may seem surprising that phish would want to play at Bonnaroo this year, it's really not. Over the last few years, All the band members have been all over the place in the music scene. It doesn't surprise me that they want to be a part of a festival that has so many great musicians every year. All of the band members played festivals this last summer and probably loved it.. I'm sure Bonnaroo offered them a pretty tasty package too. Phish is a big business that supports alot of people.. If the band wants to play a festival where they can sit in wherever they want, hang out with rockstars, and party like rockstars..who cares, I'll bitch about it, then probably buy an overpriced ticket..

Ok, for those of you who think Bonnaroo is the "best" festival you are horribly mistaken - it's the biggest and most popular, but that doesn't mean shit.

There is absolutely no doubt that Rothbury was better than Roo last year. We all knew that the moment we stepped into sherwood.

But I'm not going to say Bonnaroo sucks or is dead either. Last year it definitely sucked, but that was about the only year. I mean shit, what makes a festival is the lineup, if Phish is playing alongside kanye and dashboard confessional and the ticket is $280 with fees well obviously fuck it, but if it's phish, the dead, allmans, widespread, etc.. etc.. it could be awesome.

Hopefully both bonnaroo AND rothbury will be awesome, and hopefully there will be a phish only festival. And hopefully phish will play in my backyard everyday until they drop dead like jerry. You have to take what you get can, that's life, and better to be happy with it than complaining all the time.

My initial reaction to this news was not so good. After some thought, though I am still very skeptical, it could be a bad-ass event. Festivals are good with just a few good key ingrediants, the artist lineup being one of them. If the rest of the bands on this bill are appropriate this could be fun with two headlining nights of Phish. I have stopped going to Bonnaroo after '95 as if just grew more mainstream, attracting a crowd that just doesnt understand the "scene". I understand why they are attempting an effort to restore their "jam-friendly roots". Over the years this festival has become rediculas. My concern is that now that the popular masses who are out just for a weekend of disrespectful partying, will still come.

On another note, The New Year's following their reunion tour will be the 10 year anniversary of Big Cypress. Anyone feel like digging up that time capsule we burried in Y2K? I do. See you all in FLORIDA!!!!

You can't stop THE BURY. I'd bet a dollar that it happens. any takers? and JEN, what does 5 $50 installments plus fees equal to you? I came up with $250 (5 X 50) and fees, I'd say between $30-50. that's how I came up with $300. plus $200 in gas(at least for me coming from Chicago), $200-$500 in whatever else you spend your money on. You get about 5 or 6 phish tickets to a regular phish show for the price of 1 bonnaroo tickets, plus no 7 hour wait to get into the parking lot(maybe 20 minutes or so). AND TO WHO QUESTIONED THE NUMBERS, they're on the internet, do some research. KINDKID419--You and the rest of the Rod Blago fanclub can kiss my black ass. he gone!

What if Phish did 3 sets for two days at the main stage? That would rip. I'll have to see what the tour holds before I make any plans, but Roo would NOT be a bad thing.

All you babies who can't "handle all the negativity wahh wahhhh" need to stop crying for us to calm down. You will fit right in with all of the emo kids at roo. This is an opinion board. The obvious opinion from legitimate festival goers is that roo is a frat party, and is a very poor choice for Phish. Those hardcore phans that are going just for Phish, we wish you the best of luck, but you are making a very risky choice with your money. I like the idea of festivals being innovative and trying new things, but can you really defend Kanye or Metallica headlining a move in the right direction? The point is, out of all the amazing festivals to choose from, why chose such a controversial corporate disaster of a frat party festy? Out of all the beautiful choices, why pick the one most phans are iffy about. WTF! I just hope this isn't any indication of the type of tour they will have this summer and the type of crowd that will infiltrate the true phans. (I welcome a new and diverse crowd... so long as you aren't in a frat)

ok....i'm not thrilled about this but (and i'm just spitballin' here) what if they are thinking of something like this so they don't have to deal with the logistics of a festival with a depleted employee base? That seems like a distinct possibility to me. They don't have as many employees anymore and festivals are not easy to pull off...maybe they just want to play...any real phan should just be happy they will be touring again...i don't care where you play phish....just get out and tour extensively and i will be there!

i just dont understand you people...the comments on this page are the exact reason why i hate the current jam scene so much. why is it so bad that they are playing a huge festival, which a large amount of their former production team work for? and i have also never understood all of the bonnaroo hate? the only bad thing about bonnaroo is the heat and the size...sry they dont book abounch of tree hugging pussy bands for us to listen to all 4 days!! seriously some of you people need to get your heads our of your ass and open your fucking ears! bonnaroo always has an outstanding lineup and this year will be NO exception.

im all for jam bands being popular and having a large following, I have always liked the fans of Phish. The only time I have seen trey anastasio and mike gordon was at Rothbury last year, so maybe I just saw them at a bad time. But, with that being said, why do you guys listen to phish? The lyrics, as with most jam bands, aren't that good, I can forgive that. I love widespread panic, but a lot of songs the lyrics arent that great... is it just music to kinda dance too? I dont get it... no one I know likes Phish and the set I saw was boring and really uninspired... I am happy that the fans get to see their band play, and if they come to 10klf or rothbury I will probably go and see them, maybe when they get going they are awesome, I dont know... but the albums are tired and boring and really uninspired... but I will add that bonnaroo does in fact suck, and I am tired of jam festivals trying to put non-jam bands in the lineup, that is the only thing I hated about rothbury... someone please tell me why phish is a good band, feel free to message me or whatever, I want to be enlightened so I understand the power of phish, thank you.

anyone remember the stupid ass interviews trey and page were giving in 2004 after coventry. Trey was all "rock music is the servant of the drug culture....I don't see ourselves becoming charactures of our selves......there won't be a reunion cause reunions are all about money." Remember the charlie rose interview? Remember page going "i don't want phish to be the big thing when my daughter is in high school." How quickly everyone forgets how shitty they were to their fans at coventry. Now everyone flocks to buy up all the tickets now that they are back. Who are the morons? A lot of people already said goodbye to this crap in 2004 at their "last shows ever".....i just don't get what the fucking hype is about. I can understand the influx of people who have never seen them before having to rush out and see them to be cool so they will feel better about themselves. But for anyone who has spent their life giving all to this band, their choice of hampton and the scalper scene was beyond lame. Bonnaroo...even lamer. Why not play shows on the moon or under the sea where it makes it totally impossible to be comfortable. total BS. i'm gonna make t-shirts: "rock music is a servant of the drug culture" and they will sell in the lot to all the new custies.

I've been to several Roos and am a Phish road veteran. Although I love that Roo may be trying to go back to it's roots, it's unfortunate I can't go. Not for money reasons but because my first born will be born around that time and wouldn't miss that for anything. Don't know if I want to go back to Roo anyway, seems I'm getting too old ha. I'm just praying Phish tours.

Whiskers i bet you were never at a phish festival? and possibly never saw phish live? ill never forget my first phish show.. life changing experience.. and haha. no drugs. its ok that you don't understand why a phish phan wouldn't want them to play bonnaroo. they are that great that they don't need another hundred bands to sell tickets.. phish would make more money on there own festival so everyone shut the f up about the money! show some respect to the minds who helped creat a scene that you love.. and if you don't like phish.. thats fine too.. but they still helped creat the jam band scene you love.. and all the jam bands you listen to respect phish also! if phish played bonnaroo (highly unlikely) it would sell out so super quick and then you would be paying stupid high prices for scalped tickets.. bonnaroo is better on its own.. and if they want to find there jam band roots they should start bring in only jam bands again.

NO NO NO!! It isn't the bands that make Roo suck, it's the crowds that come with them. If I enjoy an emo/indie-ish band, I will gladly pay $20 to see them at a club and only deal with the shitty crowd for the 2-3 hours I am there. I pay festival prices to see good music AND hang out with cool people. A festival is about the experience and the people you meet, not JUST the music. Most people here agree that the crowd sucks and other festivals have a better crowd. I welcome different and cool music! Not if your fans are disrespectful newbs. And the bottom line is, it looks like phish is picking a controversial festival when they could have picked a higher rated festival.

you do know that anyone can change anything on wikipedia right? i mean, if i wanted to go to Ghandi's wiki page and put that: Ghandi was a thug and was the inventor of gangsta rap and he died in a bank know i could change wikipedia to that right? just so you'd know.... also...i have to agree with the above statement that bands don't fuck up a fest, its the fans of those bands who fuck up a fest. Now that the door was opened to all these meth head metallica and thugged out kanye west fans, whos to tell these people not to come back the next year. That would be a kick ass mix of methhead metallica fans and phishheads. NOT! Bonnaroo was 8 years ago. But several MTV specials laterits nothing more than schwagstock now. Wont find me there...and i USED to love phish. In fact many mature adults actually put this whole phish thing to bed in 2004 when the band dissed us all and called it quits. I was turned away at coventry. My unused ticket, i threw it away. Did i get a free pass into hampton for my effort in making it up to vermont? Nope...all i got was a shut out and scalpers selling tix for unheard of prices. Just wait untill those same scalpers see that phish is playing will not find a ticket under $600. So this shit dosen't excite me at all. There is nothing intimate and special about bonnaroo anymore.

As much as I wouldn't believe this and am hesitant to accept it, it kind of makes sense. We've all been wondering what type of touring schedule they would if they came back and they have said it would not be as many dates a probably more three day runs to make it easier on them. Bonnerdoo would make it really easy on them and take a lot of pressure off because they wouldn't be in charge of setting all this stuff up and be the only band playing there. All they would have to do is come and play two shows in the middle of a party and for sure a large group of good fans would be there for them. Holding their own festival right now seems like all the hassle and pressure with high expectations they are trying to avoid right now. Even if they didn't do so hot everyone would still have a good time with all the other bands there. Anyways this could easily be bunk but I can see it as a real possibility

If you don't/can't go to bonnaroo and can't leave the northeast because you might change a view or two than wait....they'll play there too! I hope the people who are mad about this are the ones that have never seen Phish play. People didn't get mad when they played H.O.R.D.E, shit man, Bonnaroo needs Phish to become relevant.

im not a huge phish fan, but i dig. i used to be a roo fan for real, but then last year happened. then superfly ups the prices this year during this bullshit recession. whaaaaaaaaat? i think they had it right in 02 and 03, tix right around $150, 80,000 people ticket cutoff, and a little less commercial. but peeps are right when they say its all about the money. even for phish! i know phish is totaly devoted to thier fans but why wouldnt phish have thier own festi? lower the prices, scene, and jizzmops that would show up to a big box festival. does phish know how much bonnaroo is charging for tickets, or about last years lineup? i sure hope so for thier sake. and everybody that says " oh well, dont show up to the roo, thier will be more room to dance, bra". i say this " have fun with the frat boys, overbearing security, and dancing @ sugar ray at the what tent or what ever sub par filler band because superfly is going throw all thier money @ phish and bruce? speaking of bruce springsteen, the only way im going to go to bonnaroo to see bruce is if he plays " dancing in the dark" and in the middle of the song he pulls cortney cox onstage and the start rocking out. yeah!

I can't believe how many people complain about the most successful music fest of them all. Get in shape, bring gallons of water and see what you want to see. I've been there every year since '03, and I always see the happiest people ever roaming the grounds. It's improved immensely since the beginning, and a true music fan would appreciate the eclectic line-up every year. In my opinion, Phish is a (music) disgrace, and the fans are naive and immature. Screw the scenesters. That said, I also do not care if Phish is indeed at bonnaroo. I know I will get more than my $ worth even with them headlining. And sure, I will be walking on balloons all weekend b/c of all the nitrous, Phish fans are just so classy like that.

Think about it folks. Coventry was a disaster, so why not play a gig like Bonnaroo. Phish gets their 80,000 phreaks without having to personally deal with any of the logistical nightmares that come with planning a big event. Really, who is truly surprised about this...

And here's the Lefsetz take...

Would the Stones play Coachella?

Who gives a shit about the Stones. But Phish fans are diehards. Phishheads believe that Phish is God. They trekked to see the band at its own festivals, year after year. Is the band afraid they can't sell a ticket anymore?

This is no way to come back, playing it safe. Phishheads don't want to hang with Springsteen fans at some clusterfuck in Tennessee. Yes, Bruce is rumored for Bonnaroo too.

No one's special anymore. No one means anything. A festival is bigger than any act. Which is why the best can go on sale without listing any participants.

A great band is sui generis. It should never open for anyone. It's not part of the scene, it IS the scene.

Phish should do arenas. Then its own festival. It's hard not to believe they're doing Bonnaroo because of their manager's involvement.

You might think this is bullshit. You'll point to the gross. You'll say everyone's happy. I'll say this is the kind of thinking that fucked up our business. It's only about money, not about soul. Phish should only think about its fans. Not its manager's need to sell out a festival that dropped significantly in attendance last year.

Festivals are the new radio show. Do a few and you can't tour independently, i.e. on your own. You fatten the coffers of the promoter, but you fuck your own career.

Come on. A good song is not good enough. We're in a business where greatness is important. If you're not willing to split hairs, if you're not willing to argue the details of a band's career, then you're not a rock and roll fan. Fans worry about the minutiae. It's only Live Nation, beholden to Wall Street, that does not care about the man on the street.

You might say it's about the hang. About going to the show and getting fucked up with your brethren. I'll say it's about the music.

Maybe a festival is too much about the hang. Which is why Phish should not be playing Bonnaroo. Because it's the music that entranced its fans, the communal hang came after.

Do you want to mix your Sweet Sixteen with a Bar Mitzvah party? Do you want a vacation where you can bowl, surf and ski? Come on. Have a little self-respect.

Phish's comeback might fail, but let's see if they can stand on their own two feet.

Or maybe Phish is the new Jack Johnson. Maybe they're gonna play EVERY festival this summer.

I can tell you its true! i also have credible knowledge that Phish will play at the Chuckie Cheese in burlington on 1/1/09 with dave matthews band opening! This is credible folks. What i also know is that Ticketsnow (copyright ticketmaster monoploiles) has also pre-bough the majority of bonnaroo tickets to ensure that the event sells out on 15.4 seconds on the day tickets go on sale to ensure that they can resell them for $850.99 plus tax to every custy poser wanna be from coast to coast so they can be at their 1st phish show! First Time I've ever posted on here! Some of the shit posted on here cracks me up! Anyway, I would be surprised to see Phish play Bonnaroo. I remember back in 99 I believe "the years get mixed up" at Deer Creek, Trey making a big deal about the Woodstock festival and what a pile of crap it was. Of course there were fires set there and rapes going on but he completely slammed the whole corporate fest thing. I guess maybe times have changes with all of the current festivals going on but they certainly don't need to play this event because they can sell plenty of tix on there own. I've never done Bonnaroo but would go to see Phish and Bruce for that matter. I'm sure its hot and miserable but I would do it anyway. Whare are people getting these other dates from? Red Rocks? They have outgrown and ruined there welcome but that would be sweet! I live just a few miles from Red Rocks so my place would be a free for all the entire weekend for sure. Last comment- Best Fest- The Clifford Ball! It's what started it all and the memories of seeing 100,000 people together for a Phish concert was amazing!

The entire line-up?? almost every fest in america in one way or another incorporated bonnaroo's line-ups from the last 2 or 3 I guess u just hate the jam festival scene's cool ...if u like the festy acts then u wouldn't be calling them cheesy.....weird???

Did you people ever consider the reason Phish wants to play bonnaroo is they, unlike their "phans" appreciate other music besides their own. And maybe they want to play for fans of live music rather than fans of phish for two whole day on what will most likely be a full summer tour. And playing a festival like bonnaroo gives them a chance to collaborate some great artists, (Phil Lesh, bb king, jack white, jimmy herring, les clapool, robert plant, jim james are just a few who where their last year.)What a bunch of crybabies. If you don't want to go, don't go. We'll be better off without you.

i'm sorry bonnaroo with or without phish i won't be in attendance. rothbury offers better vibes and better music. and phish really needs to just do their own thing, not tie into the pop music sell out crowd that has been sweeping festies recently. YAY PHISH YAY ROTHBURY BOO ROO

Too bad Bonnaroo has gone from being around $130 to close to a $300 ticket! How come ACL or Coachella haven't gone up in price anywhere near that amount in the same time span, and they're better festivals! No more Greedaroo for me.

Ok folks dont let the crazy hippies, and Phish heads get all nuts. Lets just see how the vibes play out in Hampton. With that being said, Bonnaroo is a has been for the last 6 years a festival that exopses people from all sorts of different musical backgrounds to eachother alowing for some great meatings and colberations from some of the best musicans in the music busness. Phish being one of if not the best jam bands on the planet owe it to the fans and to the unbelivers to play as many main stream shows as possible and Bonnaroo weekend gives them the perfect chance to prove to the musical world, not just the phish heads, that Phish is back and better than ever. Hope to see you all on the road for Phish 2009 reguardless of what TN, farm they may or may not stop at. (oh and BIG CYPRSS 2010 new years?? it must happen!!!)

OK. i only read a handfull of comments which i think will be accurate enough for me to make my own humble assumptions. personally, i think its great if they play roo. i've been 4 times throughout the last 6 years, and had as pleasant of a time at each. the vibe was somewhat lackluster, but everyone was as cool and nice to be around as when it was "jam-friendly", whatever that means. a lot of newcomers enjoying their first festival, and the ammenities offered at bonnaroo will hopefully encourage them to join in the festival life without totally spoiling them. i personally won't attend because i'm going to hold on to the hope of a phish campout which will suit my needs. best of luck to everyone involved. prepare for the rain bitches cause it ALWAYS RAINS at the roo. to all the haters-everything that begins eventually ends and inevitably changes. if you're on the sidelines shouting about how things used to be, you're probably missing out on a lot of good times

EVERYONE HAS THE THEIR OWN OPINIONS ABOUT BONNAROO,.........HERES ANOTHER ONE. Its obviously up to Phish where they play so let them decide. As fans all we can do is voice our opinion and hope that they will cater to us the best way possible. ALTHOUGH, I truly feel they should stick to their roots and play their shows like they always have and that is to funnel it all into their own environment and let the fans come out to see them and only them! I can honestly say that they are so good, and the Phish experience is so magnificent, that they have earned our undivided attention and energy! THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A PHISH SHOW AND ALSO A PHISH FESTIVAL!!!!!!! I guess I would beg the band to not put themselves in a distracting environment and compromise onr note of their music! Also guys, Bonnaroo sucks and is a commercially-driven, money-making, ploy to try to create a "jammy scene" Artificially!! Phish should not subject themslves to that kind of sell-out!

okay guys, everybody knows that bonnaroo is gay, but i mean, if it was your one chance to see your favorite band wouldnt you go anyways? i know that i am just still so happy that the boys are back together, and so soon, i wanna see em no matter where they are. and HEY, GUESS WHAT?? there are actually phans in the south as well as the FAR north east. and being a broke ass southerner means that bonnaroo is the best chance ive got to ever see phish. so there.

I would not go to bonnaroo if it was my only chance to see my favorite band. I've seen them enough times and been to bonnaroo enough to know it would be bunk as hell. Especially after the last few bonnaroos. If you don;t know why it would suck then you just don't know. Nothing can save roo, even phish. Its beyond repair. I will see phish this summer, but it sure as hell won't be at bonnaroo. Its my choice. Now i know that i'll be flamed and down thumbed, but thats my opinion. I know your not allowed to have on on here these days.

I guess the reason Phish fans are upset is they feel the need to see the boys whenever possible and having to go to Bonarroo is a bitch (I went the first year & thought it was too hot & way too commercialized) I tried to Phish as often as possible from my first show in 1996 ( I was 19 ) till Big Cypress and now after having seen them 60 times I've had my fill and am happy to wait until they come to my town. I saw them at Hampton in '97 and have don three entire tours. Many people would argue that those years were their prime but nothing would make me happier than if they come back and play the best music they have ever played. I'll enjoy most the shows from the comfort of my couch and with the sound quality of studio headphones. At this point if I did have the time to hop on an airplane to fly to show id rather go for a new experience like Arcade Fire.

Oh, and by the way that tour schedule is bullshit - they outgrew Red Rocks in 1993 then they tried to play there in '94 thinking if they scheduled 4 nights it would help with tickets but it was such a catastrophe they got banned for life. Apparently there was an incident in town (Morrison)

I think what Phish needs to do and is kind of a corallary to Chinaski is that Phish needs to just announce not even a specific but just announce that they are going on an extended tour and that they will be around for at least a year, this would let things calm down, they should've done this to begin with so that all this scalping bs. just a bit of mismangement if you ask me from the phish guys

I cant believe this. Phish at Roo would be terrible. Why would they want to play a fest where they have to follow rules. We all know they like to do their own thing at festies. Roo has lost its way. The first couple of years was great then turned into complete bs. Phish can easliy play their own fest and SHOULD. The best part about Phish Phest are going parting all day seeing great sets, and not feeling like an ass for paying $250 and not seeing all the bands that are playing.

Who wants to Phish and springstein on the same bill. Make it Phish, the Dead, and panic and maybe i will go. Big maybe cuz roo is too f up these days.

For the sake of clarity, Chinaski, the four night Red Rocks run that got Phish banned from ever playing the venue again was in '96, not in '94.

As for the boys ever playing there again, even if by some miracle Phish's new mgmt team has been able to convince the folks at Red Rocks to allow them back, they will once again be banned after the hordes of ticketless descend upon that tiny town. That town just isn't set up to handle the type of traffic (both vehicle & human) that a Phish tour will bring with it. The mass of humanity in and around that town in '96 was unbelievable. Just don't know why Morrison would invite that type of clusterfu*k back,

especially considering the amount of people who show up in Morrison for an '09 set of shows is probably double what it was in '96. I don't want to be Debbie Downer but I just don't see a scenario where Phish playing Red Rocks again ends well for anybody... the band, the town, or the fans.

I dont give a fuck where Phish plays, as long as I can get a ticket instead of ticketmonster stealing them all like they did for Hampton. I'm not gonna spend my rent money on a fucking concert. Wherever Phish goes and I can afford it then I will be there. I'm no Trustafarian and I got a life to maintain. So I just want to be able to afford the ticket, a goo ball, and a few 3 for 5 brews. Festivals suck, and the growing format of festival concerts must be stopped. I CAN'T be the only one to feel this way. The philosophy is to get enough bands from a wide enough range of genre's to sell as many tickets as possible. Then you get to see abreviated sets of 300 bands or whatever. Whats worse, these new fests are not even genre specific, they don't even know what they are supposed to be. I mean, metallica and DMB on the same bill makes no sense. But if you don't put metallica on the bill, you miss out on all those ticket sales to the meatheads. And lets add Kanye west too, to get some hip hop fans. And, add some of those uber cool indie bands to get some hipster kids there.

I am not a jamband fan. I could give a fuck about seeing a bunch of new-school noodler bands. I am not an "indie rock" fan. I give a fuck about "fleet foxes" or whatever flavor of the month band is cool this week. I hate electronical music. Jamtronica is worse. Hip Hop, meh, don't really care.

I love phish,i want to see a phish show. period.

all the concerns about bonnaroo are genuine and deserve to be heard. I'm glad some folks arn't scared to take off their knee-pads and say whats on their minds. Its all legitimate concerns. Its good not to be part of the herd of sheep that mindlessly just does what everyone else is doing. This new mega manager for phish is very scary. Its the same guy who manages Dave Matthews Band and he clearly has that DMB mindset. This is not the "phish" mindset that we all came to respect. As far as red rocks, i do not in a million years see that happening. If you thought the spend a months rent on the three Hampton shows was bad, expect he same or worse for red rocks. What ever happened to fans first? Now its scalpers first, fans last.

Just shameful.

you didn't hear about the monday show? The tickets were sold exclusively to scalpers and boy ydid they sell out quick! I mean they were hacked and gone in literally 5 seconds! Don't feel bad though! TicketsNow(a ticketmaster monopoly) has plenty of extra tickets available for real cheap! You can get one $50 general admission ticket for only $900! that is a straight up deal! Add that on top of the $1000 for the other three shows and that's only $1900 for 10 hours of music! Can't beat those prices!

To all the haters,

Relax off the Roo. Like many I have attended many Bonaroo's, but have not gone in recent years because like many am "snobby" about my music. Let's face reality, our scene has been dying since the break up (I am sure there are many other factors). Superfly has had to diversify in order to get people out to Tennessee. Sure there have been some flops, but I applaud their efforts. They are attempting to bring our vibe and social conciousness to the world that is sorely in need of a great deal of love and respect.

I am hoping that the rumor is true, and the Roo can for atleast next year get back to it's roots. Phish playing a two night stand would be sick. One of my favorite sets was Trey closing out in "04". For those that were there remember first tube with the fire works? Everyone was going nuts it was awesome. Now imagine the whole band there and what they could pull out. Merry Christmas
