Oh and he doesn't like Umphs but he has given them a chance 7 times. candikorn72 is just mad because Franti didnt ask "how ya feelin?" enough the last time he went to a show... no hate man, but was that repeated rant really necessary in an overall positive string of comments? take a listen to the 9:30 Club shows from this past weekend and try to say that Umphrey's doesn't throw down. if it's not your thing, that's cool... but as i hope you can see, the story is waaaaay different for a lot of us.

Oh and ya.. Looks like they are one of the first bands to open up the new House of Blues in Boston. I am skeptical about this new venue. The old sites, Avalon and Axis, were pretty awesome for house-music clubs. I wonder how much they jacked ticket prices for the new super club?

I'm a long time Umphrey's fan and Im dissapointed with what they have been playing recently. I've seen them 10-12 times in the last few years, a handful of those shows at Bonnaroo. These shows were great. The music was bangin and the crowd was nice and respectful to one another. I just saw them at the Cannery Ballroom in Nashville and I have to say that the scene for this band has turned to shit. The majority of the crowd looked under 18, which isnt normally a problem, but everyone was pushing eachother around and violently screaming at eachother while coming down off the "beans". I watched this guy behind me basically rape this girl next to me before I said something to him. Then he proceeded to hump my leg. NO JOKE. Not a fun place to be IMO. With all this going on around me it was hard to enjoy the music. They busted out all their jammin tunes but they just didnt seem like they were having a good time and it definately was reflected in their music. Maybe this is their new thing, but the whole place turned into a f*ckn rave party. All the jams turned into noodling the same notes repeatedly or rave/techno bullshit. Not what I expected after seeing Jake melt my face off on numerous occassions in the past. Hopefully it was just a bad show. How has the rest of the tour been?

Phuckin_A: have you had that Avatar a while? I'll change mine if you have.

Anyway, regarding your post: I was at the two DC shows. 11-22-08 was a good show, and the band was definitely having a good time.

The crowd in DC was cool and I don't ever have a problem with excessive bumping.

3 out of the last shows that I have seen, I have been on the rail on the Jake side, and that is a great spot to see these guys. I did have to put in some time waiting in line to get those spots, however.

Im sure this was just a bad show, but it almost seemed like they are leaning more towards that techno sound than wailing on the dueling guitars like they used too. Im not a big techno fan. We'll see, I'll always give them another chance.

Phucken_A i agree with a lot about what you say with the crowd. I've seen umph between 17-20 times in the past 3 years and have seen an increase in the amount of scumbags at the show, people just going their for the drugs, or to try and pick fights with others. Where's the love? But i try not to let that shit bother me. I got to umph for the music. They bring it every time i see it and they never seem to dissapoint.

was at the nashville show and i contribute a lot of that to the venue. the cannery is very small and has an awkward shape for a show. i was riding the rail, bayliss side, and didnt really have problems with the people around me. as far as the show, ive seen better UM shows but i think they were playing to the crowd. i sucks to be at an all ages show but you cant fault the youngster for liking a good band. the dc shows were fire tho! great crowd and energy...the ppl working the venue sucked tho. if you were at night 2, you might have seen bayliss grab a camera phone out of the crowd and mess with it for a second...that was mine...amazing...can't wait for atlanta and asheville

I would like to throw this out there... An Umph Show is good if you see it in the right area i love seeing umph in MN or Madison but when i went to Chi to see them throw down in their home town i was incredibly unhappy not because of the band but because of what i thought of as entitled fans just because umph is from Chi town doesn't mean they are YOUR BAND.. fibs need to just calm down on with their egos and realize the music is everyone's no one is entitled to anything but a good time THE BAND BELONGS TO NO ONE EXCEPT THE MEMBERS WHO MAKE THE MUSIC

Recreational Chemist

Im going to give the madison shows a try. Its been a few years since ive seen them mainly because I thought the band was hit or miss. seeing them at waka in 05 when they played twice is a perfect example. The first gig was so shitty, seemed unorganized and it sounded like they didnt know how to end any of their songs. The very next day I went to see them again, and was really blown away. everything was smooth and going together, it actually sounded like music. Im thinking 2 out of 4 shows in madtown with a nice after party at mr. roberts

Jamaica -> NYE -> First Ave -> Madtown. Can't wait! But yeah, the scene has been getting noticeably worse in the last two years, 2008 especially. All these Dead-shirt wearing kids can't handle their drugs. At the Milwaukee show alone, I saw 5 kids either pass out, black out, or just look so completely brain dead that their friends had to help them stagger out of the crowd (all had tye-dye Dead shirts on). Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the Dead, but you kids don't need to go around advertising how big of a "hippie" you are. Come for the music, not to look like a complete idiot in front of everyone!

Anyone that does NOT want their leg humped can come to Royal Oak. I never get a bummer show in Michigan, maybe it's just my opinion. I do have to admit that the last Kalamazoo show was quite young and very rowdy. Just move back a little so you have room to dance. The youngans tend to mash toward the front anyhow.

D@mn Candikorn72, 8 posts in twenty minutes, that has to be a new jambase record. Why don't you do everyone on this board a favor and get a job, or a life, or something. And one of my favorite UM shows was at cannery in 06, it was 21 and older(not like that matters, I love seeing young kids at shows, we were all there at once.) and was only five dollars. Definitely well worth it for the amazing show they put on.

Mayhem, I don't really agree with a lot of what you had to say. I wear tye-dye to every show I go to. I'm 21 so i would concider myself a much. I don't wear dead tye-dyes to show others that i'm a "hippie" kid, or to tell others that i do drugs. I wear the shirts because i think they look awsome and to show my respect to the greatest band in the universe. No matter what all ages show you go to there will be kids that will be taking way to much or drinking way to much and getting way to fucked up to function, but never blame it on what they're wearing. I, myself, have never had a bad "time" at a show. So don't blame what the kids are wearing blame what they're doing. And if you're ever in the chicagoland-midwest area always look for the kid in bertha tye-dye tee or a blue jerry face tye-dye and a steal your face hat...i always got the chronic on me!

All this talk of "riding the rails", "beans", "triple stacks", and "killing brain cells." All this shit is ruining the scene. Just keep it natural everyone will be happy (both during the show AND the next morning) and things will be all good.

gbkman87 - No where did I say that their clothes are to blame. It's just a common theme that all the fucked up kids are always wearing tye-dyes. You might've never had a "bad time" at a show, but i'm sure you've seen at least a few people at every show who are. The thing is, when you go to a show and plan on taking a quad of shrooms and a 5-strip of acid, you're probably gonna have a bad time. If you're going to the show for that specific reason, you're gonna have a bad time. If you do french fry when you're supposed to pizza, you're gonna have a bad time (south park, anyone?). To conclude, it's not their clothes that make them do stupid things; it's the fact that a 16 year old with a Dead shirt on usually doesn't quite understand how the scene works.

I'm glad the band is planning on speading some quality time in the South.

I've never seen them outside of the South, so I can't comment on "the scene" (ha...or what people think is left of one), but if people are concerned about kids showing up at Umphreys shows, come to New Orleans. They've played there the last two Jazzfests late night, and I guess it helps keep the youngin's away.

And as far at the music's concerned: More metal, less trance. Peace

Made to Measure is a good single...not UM's best work but it is what it is: a radio-friendly single. All you hippie w00ks can circle-jerk to your Walnut Creek DVD or your shitty electronica noodling while I go see Umphrey's on tour.

aw fishbone you really think it sucks? i thought you'd like it from your flaming lips oriented avatar, this track reminded me of the lips a lot, and the beach boys.

popular? for being good and bad? its still popular.

look at all these posts.

I have love/hate relationship with UM, sometimes they are off the hook, sometimes they play spastic herky/jerky tunes.

the song selection makes the biggest difference in how good they can or cannot be during any show.

I saw them at sts9/um this summer in ATL, and their set SUCKED, but when they came back to make up the lost date, (due to power outage)

and for gods sakes.. shut the hell up about the comparison of them to sts9

the music is totally different, totally different, totally different.....

I personally find sts9 easy to listen to. they never annoy me.

but sometimes, UM annoys me.

I do wish the dates for 2009 ATL were at the tabernacle and not the variety. I HATE the staff at variety, they SUCK!!!!

Great tour. Really excited to hit up the Egyptian Room in Indianapolis. If you don't dig the everyone has different tastes. But to say they suck or are untalented is absurd. You wouldn't know talent if it pimped slapped your mother at the Thanksgiving Dinner table.

First i have to respond to Glamour Profession... I dont know what show you were at, but Boston with STS9 was amazing show. I had taken a few months off of Umph because I thought the shows were lacking and that one brought me back. If you didnt like that one, you wont like any of them.

I would love to do Madison... but I dont see myself flying to Wisconsin in the winter, especially without a chance to catch a Badgers football game. But sign me up for the April 5th-11th... daddys going on tour for a week

hell yah with the madison love, even though I agree with the hit or miss lines that have been throughout this board. I've seen them about 12-13 times and 7-8 have been awesome and the others have been just meh. That said, whoever brought up the point of umph kids just standing there staring straight ahead hit it on the head...have a good time, but if you're on something that keeps you from movin around lay off a bit. choose your music, choose you friends, choose your drugs, but don't let your drugs choose your friends or your music. peace

I'm a little salty but understanding about the lack of FL love.... I understand that when some of these bands come down to south FL on a regular tour, not alot of people come out, but they always come down in the middle of the week, other than Langerado. They give Ttlanta the fri or sat night and then miami etc the mon or tues..... Its tough for some of us to get to a show in the middle of the week who love jambands.... If they come on a wknd we can bring our freinds and expose them, because down here that it the only way people are going to get into this.... Kind of tough to persuade your buddy or group of people to join you on a tues night when you have work etc.. Then the bands say well no one comes out and its far so lets not worry about it... ends up being a cycle... They should just make a wknd of it and take their families to disney then maybe you might have a scene down here.....

mayhem32 i know exactly what you mean. the whole "jam scene" has become exactly as bad as it just sounded to say those two words. kids are going to shows for the wrong reasons. the music isnt as apprecitated by most to the going to start asking eevery high school kid i see at a panic concert with a tie dyed thread on rep'n the dead, i ask them simply to name there favorite song. if the first one and/or only song they name is touch of grey, (though still a great and respected song) i will just shake my head and walk away.

Kids go to shows for all the right reasons. They go for the SCENE around the awsome music. I mean if you love music + love having access to all sort of manmade chems that will take you to another univers, then the Jamband scene is for you. It's all about doing the right amount for yourself. I don't say kids shouldn't get spun, I just think they should know their limits. The first time I did doses you didn't see me taking 6 different hits from different peeps on the lot. Also Drinking is usually the problem in my opinion at shows, people get trash!

Don't care for 'em much...but I don't feel the need to trash them.

I don't understand the use of the words shitty and untalented for descriptions of bands that folks don't like.

Why such HATE?

Jerry would certainly not approve.

That people would identify and define themselves by their musical tastes and express hatred towards other music seems entirely juvenile to me.

And I'm not going to say that you're not one of us anymore...cause you know what?

It's occured to me that I'm not one of you. anymore.

Yea i saw a comment by Bayliss that this album wouldn't be really corny, but that song is most definitely corny, i won't pass judgement on the whole album just for that song, but i pre ordered mantis and i hope that isn't how the whole album is. Meanwhile though theses shows are sick, they should've come back to upstate NY.

If you don't like Umphrey's, that's fine, it's your opinion, and why you feel the need to express it on here in a thread about a band you don't like is your deal as well.

However, to say that Umphrey's McGee has no talent is the same thing as admitting that you know absolutely nothing about playing a musical instrument or musical theory, composition, or improvisation. Whether or not you like their sound, UM is probably the tightest touring band out there right now, and the shit they play is so musically advanced that its not even funny. Candikorn, you obviously don't know shit about what musical talent is. Learn to play a musical instrument before you go insulting a band's talent in your immature diatribes. You'd probably come off like less of an ignorant little kid if you did.

UM is right behind Bisco as the most overrated jamband ever! I have seen them more than 10 times and each time I have left the show wondering why the hell I even went. More than once I had to re-locate to the back of the venue I was at because the 17 year olds talking to their friends drowned out the band - I WAS IN THE FRONT ROW!!! Wow.

Bowlegged Texan

All bands have nights which are better than other nights. All cities have kids who take too much or get too drunk. All people have tastes in music and are allowed to say whatever they want. Furthepharmer has spewed more hate than anyone else I've seen on this site, I love when he takes the high road.

i still don't understand people complaining about kids at UM shows. i've been to 13 and have never seen any more young'ns than at any other show. the ones i do see are usually just tokin' jays in the pit and rockin out like everybody else. maybe i'm biased because i still have a month left til i turn 21, but i think the biggest problem people are the older folks who get way too drunk or just generally act like they've been tripping every day since '69.

People need to just lay off those damn rolls and that shitty molly. Stuff turns you into to a fucking lunatic. Keep it real with that clean L but don't over do it. And I wouldnt recomend shroomin at a venue because those tend to be hot as fuck and you could dehydrate at any moment. DOSE IT UP!

Well this sure is another interesting Umph blog. Of course there is the total D-bag haters like candikorn that are just so childish. Real mature to say Umph has no talent. Pick a fucking guitar up and shred it like bayliss or Jake sometime. would love to see that. couldnt agree more with andrewluxe. Ive seen Umph 10 times..recently with Gov Mule at Red Rocks. Short but sick show. Then bayliss came out with Warren haynes and played Dear Prudence. Loved that. Anyways much love for Umphreys no matter what direction musically they are heading. See yall at the 3 night run in rado. Peace
