Widespread Panic :: 11.19.08 :: The Fillmore at Irving Plaza :: New York, NY

On November 19, Widespread Panic played to an intimate crowd at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza in New York to benefit the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation. Normally spread across a huge area, at the Fillmore Panic was confined to a much smaller stage, similar to the rooms they played on their rise to the top, and this close-knit environment provided photographer Jay Blakesberg a compelling view of the band.

Set I: Heroes > Disco > Angels on High, Smoking Factory > Fixin' To Die > Henry Parsons Died > Green Onions > Henry Parsons Died > Dark Day Program, Pigeons, Ain't Life Grand
Set II: Space Wrangler, North > Smokestack Lightning > Jam > Protein Drink > Sewing Machine, Let's Get The Show On The Road > Airplane > Under The Radar Jam > Papa's Home, Holden Oversoul > Conrad
E: Expiration Day, Pilgrims, Goin' Out West

Show was killer. Venue sucked. Band looked to be having a blast (mostly watching Jimmy rip!) No mention of the ceiling falling from the balcony. Thank god it was only the drop ceiling that fell but this was way over sold.

That is a fun setlist. Couple rarities amidst a lot of solid hits. Sorry to hear the venue sucked to a few of you, 'cause it sure looks like fun--bet those folks up front didn't notice anything sucky at all.

Yeah Yeah, we got it, you dont like Panic. Now go away please.

I can see how they might scare away the meek & mild & Im fine with that.

Great pics, Looks like a great set...but too bad... a overpacked venue can ruin any good set.

The show looks solid-especially the second set-Anytime you get a * with J.B. on the mandolin its epic. I was lucky enough to be in Missoula Montana in the summer of 2005 to hear the first Smokestack since 1991. They have rotated that song regularly. Cheers to the Graham boyz for making it> Bill was a pioneer to our music scene-a heroe

Heroes-> disco was the heat for an opener, too bad they went into Angels on high, which broght down the intensity level. Show was great overall, green onions was disgusting. I think its consensus that irving plaza sucks ass though..

Great pics Jay! I made the trek from CO for this show. I was 20' from the stage, Schools-side and wasn't too crowded. It seemed that the folks not dancing had the most issues with the space because others would just pack tight into them. It was a little crowded to be fair but is was an amazing show and the vibe was all good. It was hard to see Sunny and JoJo because the stage was small. The second set was the heat!

My $0.02--Leave the hate to yourself--no one cares.

It’s funny how much the lot-scene can impact people’s impression of a show. If you tour around awhile, you’ll realize it’s a town’s culture and the venue’s layout which determines the police presence. That presence affects the attendees and influences the night’s scene more than the band that’s playing. To say a band sucks, because “their” lots suck, doesn’t make sense to me. If you can’t keep your impressions of the band and the scene separate, maybe you should try another venue in another town before deciding a band sucks. Nice job with the photos, though. Thanks Jay.

I'm with Candikorn72. they finally came to western ny this summer and it was awesome to finally see them without having to travel for 5 hours and pass out in my car afterwards! I've never been to irvin plaza, but if it's anything like town ballroom in buffalo (which it seems like from the pictures) I would love to see them play a venue like that...no matter how crowded...

Yea your right some new adjectives are needed; amazing, original, innovative, energizing, beautiful, any of those would work. I LOVE ADJECTIVES. adverbs blow though.

can someone explain to me why panic is so great? not hating here i just don't know much about them. only albums i have is earth to america, and light fuse and run the double disc live one. they are both just okay to me, don't like the guys voice, and the guitar work on these just seems mediocre to me for a jam band. did they bring back an old guitarist or something after these albums? can someone tell me a good album of thiers to get? i can tell they are crazy talented i am just having trouble getting into them. thanks

If I listened to just albums I probably wouldn't like them nearly as much as I do. Go see them live...nuff said.

I think every song on every album up to Till the Medicine Takes is good. after that: so so. But you have to see them live. They are sounding great on this tour.

Lucky enough to be front and center for this treat of a show! Intimate is a great adjective for it ~ there were a lot more than 25 people there, sold out and packed. Saw them play closer to their homebase in the North Charleston Coliseum one month earlier, and hell yeah the difference in intimacy as part of the audience was like night and day.

The only downer for me was Jojo. I love the man and his contribution to the band, but did anyone else notice his total lack of involvement at this show? Like he wasn't veen there, frequently turning his back on the boys. Some weirdness there. Don't think he took even a short solo in a single song once the entire show. Actually saw School's look over at him and mouth the words "WTF??" at one point. And when they came out for the encore, he started out the first half of Expiration Day with a hand-drawn sign reading "No Sh*t" taped to his cap. Weird.

Hope all is well with the man, he's such a key part of their sound. Anyway, the rest of the boys played loud & proud. Be missing 'em in 09!
