Allman Brothers Earn Billboard Legend Of Live Award

From www.billboard.com

Allman Brothers Band
The Allman Brothers Band will receive the prestigious Legend Of Live award at the 2008 Billboard Touring Awards, set for November 20 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York.

The Legend Of Live award recognizes a touring professional who has had a significant and lasting impact on the concert industry. Previous Legend Of Live award winners include Rolling Stones promoter Michael Cohl (2004), Cellar Door Concerts founder Jack Boyle (2005), Sir Elton John (2006) and pioneering agent Frank Barsalona (2007).

The awards reception, which honors the top-performing tours, artists, companies and venues in the world based on Billboard Boxscore charts, caps the fifth annual Billboard Touring Conference November 19-20.

"The Allman Brothers Band has rocked the house for four decades, 'hittin' the note' for veteran fans and converting new generations year after year," says Ray Waddell, Billboard's executive director of content and programming, touring and live entertainment. "They're an American institution and concert icons, and Billboard is thrilled to honor them as this year's Legend Of Live."

On the cusp of their 40th anniversary in 2009, the Allman Brothers Band has long been one of the most compelling and popular live bands in the world.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers formed in 1969, and continue to tour regularly to packed houses and massive festivals. The group is made up of founding members Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, along with longtime members Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, Oteil Burbridge, and Derek Trucks.

The Allman Brothers are on tour now, catch the legends live. Dates available here.

They deserve it! Raw power, soulful blues, epic jams - these guys were (and still are) a smokin' hot ensemble, a rip roarin' duel lead guitar powerhouse. Thank you Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks especially!

Long live Duane and his screaming slide guitar!!

think about it. without warren or derek, the allman brothers would be another retirement act like how Aerosmith is now, or any of those good 70's bands that still play. Warren and Derek have brought new life into the band while still obtaining the spirit of Duane and Dikey.

i couldn't agree more about what warren and dereck have brought. i'vee told friends going to the dead show in PA not to miss the allmans. i think they're making some great music and might show up the dead being that they are on tour and the dead could be a little rusty. That being said, the fact that the dead haven't been recogined is ashame. in 1993 they were the highest grossing band and would have been again in 94 if not for the production tours of pink floyd and others. not to mention attendance records at winterland, msg, the greek, and others. maybe next year after the dead's summer tour.

1st this is definitely deserved, no doubt, and I agree with Wilde, but I'm not sure I agree that the Allman's would be a retiremnt act without Warren or Derek. Dickey Betts penned many of their most popular songs and still is out there ripping it with Great Southern. Rememer, when Warren and Allen left to pursue the Mule they were replaced with two sutds (Oteil and Jackrson). Oteil still holding it down. Then Jack Pearson was replaced with a pretty talented guy, right, Jimmy Hearing. This band can succeed regardless. I love Derek and Warren, but Jack was no slouch and we all know the skills of Jimmy.

pretty cool, i've never heard of the award either. my question is will Dickey me there to me involved with this? highly doubtful, but he's just as deserving if not more deserving than any of them. The past few years have been great, but Dickey is the one that kept them together after Duane and Berry died, then when Greg went solo and acted like as idiot in the early 80s, and when Greg was a massive drunk in the mid to late 90s. I know Dickey turned into a drunk and was eventually asked to leave, but the Greg drinking period was even worse. He rarely made it through an entire show. I still can't believe the band made it through that period, especially after Warren and Alan left. Oteil and Jack helped, and then Derek obviously, and Warren when he ended up coming back. My stance on the Allmans these days is that as long as Derek is up there rippin it, I'll be there if I can.

yeh they definately deserve this award. ABB deserve it that is. as far as past "legend of live' award winners ,with exception to elton john who id say would be deserving , wouldnt be me first choice but i can see why he'd be picked, anyway pioneering agents, and promoters getting these awards??, wtf, seems to me that the musicians performing the live shows would be the "legends" and deserve the awards. i'd like to maybe see GD or Phish amongst that list rather than jack boyle whoever the fuck he is. good for the allmans tho, they are most definately legends when it comes to live music.

ooo and to answer schofizzi's question to why everyone is so cold towards aerosmith? dude just listen to their music it is miserable hah

"The Legend Of Live award recognizes a touring professional who has had a significant and lasting impact on the concert industry. "

not just bands ... so frogy, give the promoters a break - without people like Bill Graham or Jack Boyle... cellar door put on phish shows back in the day, just like BG did the dead ... - And aerosmith rocks - not all of it, but enough of it - peace - vote-

a deserved award for an unbelievably talented band. I have to agree with other posts here, that after Derek Trucks came onboard, along with Warren Haynes this is without a doubt THE most lethal guitar duo out there today. Seeing the Allman Bros. is a must for me on a bi-yearly basis. When I want an evening of nonstop energy and thrown-down chops, this is it. Psyched to be seeing them with the Dead at the Obama benefit.

On another note....Aerosmith were tons of fun......till they got sober and clean. Then they sucked hard!

It's the 5th annual Billboard Touring Awards. Is this also only the fifth annual award of Legend Of Live?

Not only are they one of the best live bands around, they are better right now then they have been in years. I saw them at Red Rocks over Labor Day weekend and they really rocked the place.

Jimmy Herring is an exelent guitarist. but i don't think he really fit with the allmans style that well.

and i wasn't being cold towards Aerosmith, im just saying they play all there hits every single show and charge buttloads. same goes for the Eagles, and The Stones. Which are both great bands. (not so much the eagles)

Just caught them last night w/ phil lesh in charlotte. Killer show haynes and trucks tore the place down although I think I might have accidently stepped on someone out in the mass of people on the lawn passed out.

elizabeth reed is probably my favorite allmans tune, dickey could write a hell of a song, although a havent seen them since i got arrested after one of their shows last summer i love what they got going on these days, trucks and haynes are just too good.

The ABB is now the "warren and derek" show. And what a show it is!!! Greg should kiss their feet daily for breathing life back into the band.

The Oldman Brothers Band is finished. With no brand new original band penned material they have nothing to bring to the table musically that hasn't already been heard. Derek and Warren particularly cater(marketing) to the younger crowd that are just now hearing their music and hasn't seen them yet or jumps on the "they are the next GREAT 'jam band' thing". And the same ole same ole fans continue to support this nostalgia act blindly not even attempting or caring to question why the hell there is no brand new music. The band doesn't care about new music as long as you keep coming with your money. They are a touring entity out only to make money and NOT a creative entity at all. The folks who buy instant lives(or munckmix now) are suckers, but oh well, its their money(medicine/candy).

No, Nsafay, the ABB does *NOT* put out brand new band penned original material all the time. Do tell what material it is you speak of, this I can't wait and would LOVE to hear about!!!!!! I DARE YOU!

The last brand new album was FIVE almost SIX years ago. Before that 9 years. The only brand new band penned original music that has come out of this band since 2003 is one single tune: Egypt. An instrumental penned by the bands bassist, Oteil Burbridge, which was a take on his tune called "Walk Like a Man" from as far back 2000.

Hands down the best band on the scene today. Well deserved it is so refreshing to see gregg have this spark of energy. Was lucky enough to catch them in Pelham back on the 7th. The best show i've been to so far. Is it march '09 yet?
