MMW New Album/Tour

Medeski Martin & Wood Gear Up for Radiolarians I

Medeski Martin & Wood
Medeski Martin & Wood have never been your typical band. Creativity has led their career and their music always stays unique. Now, the restlessly inventive improvising trio Medeski Martin & Wood are set to embark on an ingenious new experiment dubbed The Radiolarian Series.

The Radiolarian Series - named after a type of single-celled organism with dazzlingly intricate exoskeletons - is designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write/record/tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, will convene for brief writing retreats, perform only that new material on tour, record the material immediately after getting off the road, and release it as an album on their own Indirecto label.

The process will be repeated three times, resulting in three albums - the first of which, Radiolarians I, will be in stores on September 30. Check out "Free Go Lily," the first single from Radiolarians I, via the link below.

Hell yea, catchin the only east coast date in NY.. one of my faves. if you haven't heard The Wood Brothers as well, check em out. Saw em in a tiny ass theater recently, i was sittin like 5 feet from Chris, watchin em Shrrreeeeeeed the stand up... One of the better shows i've seen in a while. his brother Oliver is the shit too, great song writing and vocals.

as with any spectacular group, it takes time to really appreciate the greatness. if you have not seen them live then dont jump to conclusions. saying that, their shows can vary completely from an absurd couple hours of what seems to be like random esoteric style jamming, to funky ass shows where you've never danced harder in your life.. give em a chance, it'll be rewarding.

I must admit I have not seen them live. Bought the John Scofield CD with them (go-go)and was very disappointed, having heard Larry Goldings with John. Goldings is just amazing. BUT, I got a live CD with MMW that I will take a closer listen to.

right on, i actually liked the recent scofield cd they came out with, Out louder. Check out Combustication, Shack man, End of the world party. Staple MMW cds. their live shows will blow ur mind though, just simply watchin em go at it.

Ramon -- it took me a while to get into them, and while I still don't LOVE them, they're definitely a great group, that has a tendency to go all over the place. I agree with phish728, I liked Out Louder a LOT better than A Go-Go, and those other CDs are great too, and definitely try to catch them live if you can.

"Not funk, not jazz, a rock band with jazz and funk ambitions." -- sorry man you're wrong. mmw are as funky as a jazz trio can be, and while they rock, they are not a rock band. listen to mmw, not scofield with mmw as back up (go-go) or even mmsw. check out shack man and friday afternoon in the universe if you want to hear some funky-ass jazz.

i already have my tix for the mystic, fillmore, and nugget. can't wait to see this music evolve at every other show at the end of the tour. by sparks, this new material should be solid.

here's a lil somethin from my mmw show in Ithaca. my crappy camera/vid at the time turned a half-grainy shot that jumps on zooms but you'll get the idea of what they were turnin' out the last tour. If I had to film 10 mins of that show, this would've been the 10.

similar to that past tour, this next tour seems to promise more of the same great true improvisational avant-jazz MMW turned out night in and night out.

bring back 'project'.

love, love this band. saw them do a three night run through buffalo, rochester, and ithaca doing material in support of the first radiolarians album. simply cannot wait to hear all the new stuff. If you cant get down to MMW, my friend you have no soul, or youre just deaf, in either case, well thats a bummer.

Good Lord ramon, you didn't like "a go go"? That was a groundbreaking album in the jam world that REALLY introduced MMW to the jam community. That album came out and shortly thereafter I saw Medeski, Scodield, Stubbfield (Billy couldn't make it for some reason, so Clyde filled in), and Wood at Wilmer's Park in Maryland. Many Old-schoolers will remember this as the start of the modern festival, this being somewhere around '96? help me out someone. Anyways, after this incendiary show, I witnessed one of the largest drum circles ever, a couple of the bands even bringing pieces of their drumsets and participating. Jeez, those were the days!

sorry, I should have said...this being the site of the start of the modern festie, as there were many previous gatherings at the site, amoung them, the All Good Festival, which was born at Wilmers. This particular Festival was called "The Autumn Equinox".

I think A Go GO was an amazing breakthrough; it changed the way I approach my own music. That being said, these guys are very particular and somewhat insular, even; I happen to enjoy them more with Scofield. Ramon has stated an opinion and done so respectfully. I applaud him for that. It is all taste. I don't happen to "feel" WSP- so despise me. I fully acknowledge their talents and the ardor of their great fans. Folks on these boards need to learn how to disagree with dignity intact.

Ive seen this band approx 12-15 times & love em. If you go see them @ a club/theatre you might get 2hours of free form noise with hardly any grooves. Generally their festival sets are much more funky & danceable. If you like the funky stuff I recomend starting with Shackman & Combustication.
