Umphrey's McGee Fall Tour

Umphrey's McGee
Perennial jam heavyweights, Umphrey's McGee are getting ready for their fall tour, kicking off October 2 in Michigan. Notable stops along the way find two-night stands in Burlington Vermont, Knoxville Tennessee, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and four-nights in New York City (all dates below).

In case you haven't picked it up yet, the band released Jimmy Stewart 2007 this past June. This digital-only release features the band's best improvisations of the past year. Jimmy Stewart 2007 is a limited edition release, first available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and thereafter available digitally through and iTunes. Plus, the UM download will offer up a companion podcast with an additional 70 minutes of material that did not make the Jimmy Stewart 2007 album.

Jimmy Stewart 2007 is an ambitious effort to compile a year's worth of the band's inspired improvisations into two seamless 70-minute "mixtapes." At over 100 shows a year, Umphrey's McGee delves into these spontaneous compositions, engaging their fans as they feed off each other's energy. A Zappa-inspired language of body gestures and hand-signals allow the band to break structure while creating an entirely new arrangement. As Umphrey's McGee continues to evolve, each live performance showcases the band's "Jimmy Stewart" approach to structured improvisation.

Also, Umphrey's McGee released a digital-only live series titled CompendiUM. Available through iTunes and, CompendiUM offers live recordings of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007. Included in the series are the band's Boulder, Colorado show from March 6, their Portland, Oregon show on June 7, and the Chicago show from December 30, among others.

Jason Woodside

let the hating begin!!! honestly bayless isnt a great singer but he gets better as time goes on. the rest of the band is sick nasty and i personally cant wait to see em in jamaica and chitown among others. UM is by far the best band on the scene, they play movements while others mindlessly noodle around trading solos. they are incredible composers who can handle a broader range of musical styles than even phish or sci. the lyrics are meaningful and are sound better as they progress (as the band as a whole has done as well). no band on the scene has a greater understanding of music and such a stellar way of delivering it, and with no other band on their level could you make a cd mix with 10 songs that actually sounds like 10 different nasty bands.

I live in Chicago, but I was hoping for a Vegas date. Bummed about no Vegoose this year, and last year's UM latenight show was the highlite of my enitire trip, and I wanted to plan another trip out there to see them. It's ok, though, 3 nights at the auditorium will give me more than my fill.

Jasonthehead, TLG has got to be the most derivative band in the dying (hate all you want, but the scene's fading) jam scene. Bland, repetitive and uninspired. UM still tries to push boundaries and still delivers. TLG wallows around in mindless jams. If TLG is the future of "jam'" then PLEASE turn this place into indiebase ASAP.

Though it's my actual opinion, I usually don't express that kind of negativity, especially here. It was kind of an experiment in honesty. Some of my favorite singers don't do it for others. I think you people actually took it pretty easy on me. I may not love UM, but I have hung with tons of their fans at High Sierra, Vegoose, Mardi Gras with Phil in S.F. and a show at the Key Club in Hollywood a few years ago. UM fans rage, and they rage righteously...good times will be had on this tour, no doubt.

Cannot wait for this show.

SICK! there is no other way to say it. i'm going to norther lights and i'm catching two nights in burlington and have those tickets locked up. no one has said anything but i'm stoked for conspirator almost equally as umphrey's considering that you know that jake will play with conspirator (he's done it before). That being said i don't think that they're the best band on the scene, i would reserve that right to my boys the biscuits, and despite all that i said before that one comment will just get me all those negative integers

"It was all Illusion, fragment of the whole

product in confusion, mastering my soul.

Moments of division, lost about the way

I can't feel my vision, swollow and remain.

Moments of division, lord but I can't see

contemplate my motion, who am I to be.

All my thoughts divided

All my friends divided

All my worlds divided, it's gone so far

All these ways divided

All these thoughts divided

When all our roads are spoken for.

then it fades, far gone

it's my sin

soul embrace

soul the same

soul embraced

soul the same"

I second all the great comments about UM so far, they are by far my favorite band doing their thing right now. For some reason they really always do take a few listens and 1 - 2 shows before I can get any of my friends hooked, but once they do they don't go back.

The Tabernacle show was definitely up there with my favorites out of the 12 shows i have seen. August 1st was kinda a disappointment though, and I really wanted them to THROW down on the 2nd. They more than made up for it with the show last Sunday. Anyone trying to get into UM should give this show a serious listen. Although the quality is not fantastic, there is a taping of the show on that someone put up. Enjoy!

As far as 2008 goes, they are on FIRE right now! Go see them as soon as you can! Especially if you caught a bad show in the past and you've got a grudge. If you love awesome music, as you should being on this board, you really need to be a part of the UM crowd if youre not already. To all my UM peeps, Ill see you front and center. Peace!

It's funny how New York City finally gets multiple shows after 2 years and do it is on a weekday so any one with a job can't go to all of them. I guess NYC isn't a big enough market. Their manager is a little dopey. WHy not book friday Saturday SUnday, No they have an important date in Geneva, NY. New YorkCity is starting to forget Umphrey's. THey are playing as good as they can and then they do a rookie move and book a weekday in the big city. The problem is rookies only book week days because they can't get booked for Friday or Saturday. Any one with any juice will have to miss this one.

I dont get whats so appealing about the RAVE, or Milltown for that matter. I wont be attending only because of the RAVE, how are you going to sell your hometown piss brew for $7 a 12oz. cup? Not to mention the acustics of that place blow, and theres usally bass puring through the walls due to a hip-hop show in the next room. Sorry for being negative, but come over to the Twin Cities, or at least Madison, anywhere but the RAVE.

So then wait a week and then play Geneva, but no weekend shows in NYC is ridicules. Geneva is near enough to a few universities where people can make weekday shows. I can't and I would see all three and 2 years is too long for no weekend shows. I'm sorry Geneva will not keep Umphrey's touring and selling records. NYC will keep a small band alive.

No insult to Geneva, but New Yorkers shouldn't be treated like such shit by Umphrey's. They skipped us last spring tour and played in Cemtral JHersy at The Starland Ballroom instead. The train doesn't go there and it is in a school zone. Of course 20 people got arrested for weed. My girl got felt up by the boucers and knocked into the bar by the bouncers. Philly gets friday or saturday every time, so does DC, Atlanta, but NYC gets skipped or tossed some pathetic weekday show. Save the week days for the college towns.

For being, "the city that never sleeps", it's funny how much bitchin all the NYC'ers are doing about "Not having weekend bookings for UM".... You guys are saying Geneva somehow doesn't deserve a weekend booking. Do your homework people. For years, Upstate NY Cities have been the backbones of many o' large jamband tour. (roch., syr., buff, ithaca, troy, albany, binghamton/johnson city, etc...) Add to that that Umph has only hit true upstate cities a handful of times, (none in central NY) geneva def. deserves a weekend show. Besides, NYC'ers, rock out all night at UM and then go to work. Have a rough day at work. don't be calling the UM manager out or bitching about Geneva. Get out of the smog for the weekend, get in your ride and come visit the Finger Lakes, listen to UM and buy some wine. Just please quit complaining. You get 2 back-to-back nights and then you bitch because they are not on the "right" nights. Gimme a break people. Besides, I look at this Geneva show as like Phish did at utah shows. Lots o' heads would skip these shows because they were out of the way, and then a day later, they would see the setlist and shoot themselves. THE OUT-OF-THE-WAY, OFF-BEAT TOUR STOPS ARE OFTEN THE BEST PLACES TO HEAR SOME MIND-BLOWING, once-in-a-blue-moon crazy setlists. fwiw. cheers to all.

Geneva could've been on a tuesday and i still would have driven 90 mins each way and gone to work @ 6 a.m. the next day...

interesting, joloanapova, you want to talk about inferiority complexes? how about creating 3 accounts (joloanapova, farflantz, acidfilms) on the same day, and then a 4th today ( to express the same opinion of your original account (bigfro). you need five personalities to get your point across. inferiority complex much?

maybe if you knew your UM history better, you'd realize they play weekend gigs in NYC all of the time. here's 5 from the last 2 years. that's more weekend gigs than any other city in the last 2 years (outside Chicago new year's run).

the eagles ballroom is cool and nice for a show but the way that venue is ran is just shady. not to mention overaggressive security guards tryin to find any excuse to throw someone out, it's like entering a prison. and like mentioned before $7.50 for 12 oz beer is ridiculous, who do they think they are the milwaukee brewers, even the brewers give ya 16oz. maybe if the rave treated music fans with respect i wouldn't have a problem seeing shows there but until then, keep coming to the pabst or the riverside
