JJ GREY & MOFRO PREMIERE VIDEO FOR "ORANGE BLOSSOMS"

JJ Grey & MOFRO, whose new CD ORANGE BLOSSOMS is receiving massive press and radio play around the country, debut their first-ever video for the title track (and first single) from the CD.

Directed by Spookie Daly (of the band Spookie Daly Pride), the film is a faux crime story telling of the seedy underbelly and corruption involved with Florida's dangerous and violent orange blossom industry.

Starring JJ Grey as crime boss Talmidge "Sweet Thang" Davis and guitarist Daryl Hance as enforcer Roy "Tater" Rothstein, the tongue-in-cheek story involves the rise and fall of the notorious and fierce North Florida flower syndicate. The story unfolds with closed-captioned narration while the song plays.

Love me some front porch funk of Mofro. Loved the vid and song. There hasnt been a white dude with this much soul since Wayne Cochran.

Like the new disc and the vid is entertaining. Lots more horns on this album, which is one of the best parts of seeing them live. And matthau is right, conjugal you def haven't seen these guys live. But I am curious about something....when Country Ghetto came out, didn't they say the name changed to "JJ &..." because the songs were so personal??? So, why is the name still JJ Grey & Mofro? Mofro is a much better name than adding JJ at the front, and I guess the whole line of the songs being too personal was a bunch of BS. Not saying they're not personal songs to JJ, but obviously some tool from the label made them change the name and they didn't wanna call em out. I guess you could call them up & coming freehawk, but I remember seeing these guys in VA like 6 years ago and they smoked then. Hopefully the mainstream doesn't grab them too much and turn that sweet funk into crappy pop!!!

Phunkle...i am sure Mofro smoked back in the day. But, i feel like some bands REALLY hit their stride at certain points in their careers....and JJ and Mofro are poised for that defining moment right now. I too hope they don't get spoiled by fame, if it happens.

I might have to argue that there hasn't been a white boy with this much soul since Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes.

I like Mofro, but I think JJ made a mistake sticking his name in front of his band. Reid Genauer did the opposite with AOD when they got popular...

I hear ya matthau, I just hope they don't become too up and coming.....love getting to see them at the small venues when they come to town! ^^^Funny on a personal note that you mention Chris Robsinson, my girl tells me that in her next lifetime JJ and Chris will be her lovers. I guess they're both pretty damn soulful.

Not surprised these guys are blowing up. Every time they come to Boston the crowd grows as well as the vibe. I can honestly say all 4 of their albums are excellent. By the way, Spookie Daly prides' album "Marshmallow Pie" is realy worth a listen(in my opinion).

In the next video they should have JJ Grey in a swamp, wrestling like 3 alligators at once while chewing on a piece of straw, with a trailer on the hillside in the distance.

The name change was pretty much forced onto the band by their record company. REALLY pissed off hardcore fans of the band. New album has been playing non-stop since I got it. You want to hear something that will make the hair stand up on your nut sack? Find someone that has the JAM CRUISE V DVD. In the ectra features, there is a version of "Lochloosa" with just JJ and Luther Dickinson.

speaking of lochloosa, that is definitely my favorite album. I bet that version is amazing Rhino. Wakarusa camping stage show a couple years back was spiritual. I can't say enough about all the shows I've seen. Oh man. Shit, I hope they come back to Eugene.

Hahahaha! Great video. I love the scene where Daryl picks his nose and the caption says, "Savage, violent animal." I got a kick out of that. As for people frontin' on Mofro, their albums don't do them the justice that their live shows do. Don't pass up an opportunity to see 'em.

Just saw them last night in Santa Fe. Awesome, incredible show!

You know, I love J.J. Grey, andd I think he added a lot to the band, but Mofro was a great band before he came along, too. During the show, I found myself wishing that they would play at least one instrumental with or without their "new" front man; it seems like they only play J.J.'s songs now. Oh, well.

Guys and Gals -

No one from the record label or any other facet told JJ to change the name of the band. Nobody. If you do some homework you can find out what was the reason for the name change. Basically, JJ has been the creative force behind Mofro since day one and he wanted people to realize that.. Not for his ego just because he has pride about everything he writes about so hence the name change..

The new Mofro album is sick and these guys are poised to make some major advances with their career... Good stuff. and the video is hysterical!

wait a sec PGEANO-

Only played JJ's songs? They're all JJ songs!! and I don't think Mofro has any instrumentals.. Do some homework... added a lot to the band?? He's been in the band since day one! it's HIS band...

PGEANO - yeah, you're thinking of a different band. JJ and Daryl have been MOFRO since they got together. They started the whole thing. I too, think it is a bummer that JJ had to put his name out in front. No one ever wondered where the creative force of this band came from. We certainly didn't need to be told. That said, it does follow the precedent of classic soul acts which JJ is clearly rooted in. Nonetheless, there is an ego there that is undeniable. Sorry T. Man.

Hmmm...

Well, now, I am starting to second-guess myself. I could have sworn I saw an instrumental band called Mofro in the summer of 2003. Wasn't that band without J.J. Grey?

Travelin' Man

I have never seen 'ego' out of JJ. he's a musician so there is some sort of pride that comes with what he does but don't let pride fool ya as ego...

He's one of the more grounded musicians I have come across. no worries, we can agree to diagree..

pgeano- could you be thinking of the Motet?

JJ has always been in Mofro, it's his band. The name change was due to him wanting to put more of a personal stamp on what was his all along..

MilesGone

who cares if his name is in front of the band now? big deal.

he is THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC, no one bitched at BB King or Buddy Guy!!!

or Sharon Jones??? get over it, it is not that important!!!!

what is important is Mofro has SOUL, Groove, and music and lyrics that come from the HEART.
