1,000 RECORDINGS TO HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE
A Listener's Life List

A world of music awaits discovery in Tom Moon's 1,000 RECORDINGS TO HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE: A Listener's Life List (September 12, 2008; paperback/hardcover; $19.95/$32.95). Set sail with the letter A, or B or W. Land first at the familiar, and reconnect with the pleasures of a favorite piece, like J. S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos or The Beatles' Abbey Road. Continue on, and soon we're veering off course into the exotic and the unknown: The Bad Brains' I Against I, Ray Barretto's Barretto Power, Billy Bean's The Trio: Rediscovered. The odyssey has just begun, and we can't wait to find out where we're going next.

Driven by the notion that the more you love music, the more music you love, Tom Moon delivers a smart, passionate guide to the 1,000 recordings every intrepid music-lover should hear at least once. And even if we never quite get around to picking up a copy of Propellerheads' DecksandDrumsandRockandRoll, we will be utterly absorbed in the description of its mind-bending Big Beat electronica.

1,000 RECORDINGS does for music what the bestselling phenomenon 1,000 Places to See Before You Die did for travel. It draws readers into learning more about their own musical favorites and provides a jumping-off point to explore new artists and sounds. This user-friendly guide covers every type of music—rock to classical, blues to country, hip-hop to world.

Moon — a long-time critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer and for National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" — interviewed hundreds of musicians and spent three years creating his list of 1,000 peak listening experiences. He arranges the entries alphabetically, encouraging readers to step outside the comfort zone of their favorite genres. Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 is side by side with Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited. Blues giant B. B. King's Live at the Regal shares a page spread with The Kinks' The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society. And heavy metal's Metallica follows the mystic composer, Olivier Messiaen.

1,000 RECORDINGS is certain to spark debate: Billy Joel fans will cry foul that he did not make the cut, and others will question why Britney Spears belongs in the pantheon. (Bring it on! A companion website, www.1000recordings.com, will provide an outlet for comments and feedback.) The important thing is that 1,000 RECORDINGS will awaken the seeker in all of us—inspiring listeners to pursue new sounds while reconfirming the greatness of the classics.

Man, I looked at this list. They put Mars Volta The Bedlam in Goliath on there but they didn't even put a single Tool album on there. Looks like they forgot a bunch of bands

nice gimmick by the author, but a book based on his opinions is bound to spark debates. Any book like this that would include Britney Spears and not include Billy Joel isn't worth the papers it's printed on. that my opinion, haha

Yeah the list is missing many good albums on there like phishr82 says it is solely based on opinions. So how are they the top 1000 albums to listen to before you die maybe for him but someone else might think otherwise. Good gimmick to make some money i guess.

phishr82 - you said it very well. I could understand why he would include the likes of Spears, but to exclude Joel AND include her should be reason enough to toss the book and this article right in the trash. A little help Jambase? You would save everyone a lot of wasted electrons responding to this drivel.

I like Moon, always have, but yeah...this book is just gonna piss people like us off. And its also going to sell a zillion copies because people like my weirdo aunt will buy it for me for the holidays. Moon's gonna retire off this thing, no doubt. Good for him I say.

Just the fact that the guy mentions Britney Spears and Billy Joel makes me realize that I dont need to look at this list too deeply! Although I'm sure the biggies of Rock are all there Elvis,Dylan,Berry,Grateful Dead, Beatles,Stones,Ramones, ect. It would be hard to not limit myself to 1000 rock albums!

Volta's best album is Frances the Mute and alot more important than Bedlam.

Hopefully he has Guns 'N Roses "Chinese Democracy" on that list. Nevermind, we all may die before that album ever gets released :)

i didn't even look at the list and already i'm skeptical. i wonder how many records this dude has actually listened to before deciding on which thousand to choose? not to mention the fact that sometimes albums need to be listened to more than once to truly be appreciated.

"not to mention the fact that sometimes albums need to be listened to more than once to truly be appreciated." (VERY true)

- i only looked for a second, i saw AB (live at filmore, which ill agree is a sick live album)Downward Spiral, Vulgar display of power and remain in light, pretty well rounded

-if its true and they dont have even 1 tool album on their ...thats retarded

sgt peppers, rubber soul, the white album and revolver are listed.. good call on that... but ABBA? c'mon.. and what's with "you're only allowed to search every 10 seconds?" Granted, personal opinion.. but I don't know anyone who can claim their life was changed by anything ABBA released....

some great albums on here

Ryan Adams- Heartbreaker

Talking Heads- Remain in Light

The Flaming Lips- The soft bulletin

and a shit load of classic rock ones

although i find it insane there is not one moe. , primus, or phish album on here , i think the idea of this book is kinda stupid because its merely opinions (as u all have previously stated) , not to mention it doesnt give much credit to newer artists, id be much more interested in the one thousand lists of my fellow jambasers, i believe it would be much more effective to compile a list of 1,000 most influential albums rather than what some goon wants me to hear before i die

Volta's best album is amputechture, no wait, scabdates, no wait it is the 5th lp that has yet to come out yet... Oh wait, you cant judge TMV's albums as 'better' or 'worse' for they are all epic in their own different ways. Its like comparing Dali's paintings

This book is a really fun idea. I'd embrace a debate on this shit with some of my buds--that'd be a really fun debate that may not have the same potential to turn ugly (like with politics).

That's sort of become a strange concept here on Jambase: a challenging, passionate yet FRIENDLY, mutually respectful debate. But still, I love the Jambase.

Folks, it all boils down to the opinions & assholes rule. Just wait until after X-mas and it'll be in the bargin bin at your local Barnes & Nobles.

this list is not 1000 greatest recording but 1000 recordings to hear before you die. I agree that britney spears should be on there. I don't enjoy listining to spears but i think everyone should hear it once. This is music that defines the "pop" genre tht came out of the 90's. Its shit but its an unfortunatly important part of music history. The fact that theres no phish on there though makes me disregard any opinions the author has.

I've stated before that i work at Barnes and Noble...this book is a pretty decent book to flip through for fun, a bathroom reader if you will...it will of course have ones in there that will make you think "REALLY?" but it's not too bad, especially since they at least put Grateful Dead's American Beauty album in it...so check it out the next time you pop in a bookstore when you have time to kill...

I'm glad that The Soft Bulletin and Remain in Light made it... but this isn't worth being bound by a book. this should stay on this opinionated douche-bag's blog or something.

Lots of cool recommendations, though most are pretty hipster, record store clerk codified at this point. If he'd gone for a different Beach Boys album than the endlessly overpraised Pet Sounds I'd be more intrigued but it's that kind of "safe but cool" mentality behind this that will likely keep me from buying this but would happily add to my bathroom if given as a gift. It so totally reminded me of the kind of lengthy, hyper passionate conversations I used to have with my co-workers when I worked at Amoeba Music in Berkeley & SF. However, if you find yourself puzzling over a lot of what's on his list I'd highly recommend checking some of these albums out. Near as I can tell, no real duds in the bunch, and that's to his credit.

And any list that includes Djivan Gasparian's I Will Not Be Sad In This World, Los Amigos Invisibles' Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey into Space, War's Why Can't We Be Friends and James Taylor's Sweet Baby James is pretty swell actually. Maybe I'm just jealous I didn't write this beast. I'm willing to admit that possibility...

This is dumb. No one will ever be able to listen to all the music ever recorded. Its a popularity thing.
