GREGG RETURNS TO HEALTH
BLUES-ROCK-JAZZ JUGGERNAUT RELAUNCHES

ABB by Dino Perucci
The Allman Brothers Band will make their triumphant return to the concert stage this summer, with two dozen shows from August 12 through October 11. On the first leg of dates, the group will share the stage with Bob Weir & RatDog, and Phil Lesh & Friends will be on board for the second leg.

The August 12 show in Bethel, NY will mark the first group performance since last September's featured guest spot at Farm Aid (9/9/07), which followed a Piedmont Park appearance in Atlanta (9/8/07) with the Dave Matthews Band. Late last year after the group's summer tour, group co-founder, keyboardist and singer Gregg Allman underwent treatment for Hepatitis C. Allman battled through two months of debilitating Interferon treatments but has made a complete recovery and is now disease-free.

"I feel great, man," says Allman. "The treatment really kicks you in the ass but I came out stronger. I'm ready to play." Due to the side effects of the aggressive Interferon treatment, the group had to postpone their annual run of dates at the Beacon Theatre in New York City as well as performances at Bonnaroo and their own Wanee Festival in Florida.

"I've known about having the disease for a long time, but was never a candidate for treatment until last year," continues Allman. "When my doctor told me to go for the Interferon, I knew it would be a battle, but I'm great now."

Side effects from Interferon treatment include flu-like symptoms and chronic fatigue. "I just didn't have the energy to play," says the keyboardist-singer. "And we're a band that puts on two-hour shows that change every single night. You gotta be at full capacity to do that. And now I am."

Everybody I know is excited about the Oct. 7 show in B'ham. Allman Brothers and Phil and Friends what a way to come back from a bout of sickness. We really appreciate it as not to many great shows happen in Alabama.

Wow dready...you don't know Dickey Betts. (Perhaps he's worse than Hep C) I like Dickey but I certainly don't miss him considering who filled his shoes. Regardless I am eager to see these guys bring the heat at Red Rocks next month...well worth the travel!

Yeah dready, don't mean to sound like a new schooler , but Warren and Derek are way more talented than Dickey.

Dickey Betts was and is a great player who brought great songs to the table. I miss Blue Sky especially. Warren and Derek bring a different style that is hard to compare. It's like trying to compare Pigpen and Brent Mydland-era Dead. To say Gregg is a "little bitch" for not putting up with Dickey's drunken antics any more is ridiculous. It was tolerated for 30 years, but unfortunately Dickey never gained control over his problems. Try touring with a raging a-hole and see how you like it. It's great to see them back but how about some Ohio shows?

i remember nov 1996 i was going to see the bros in oxford. leading up to the show all i did was bitch that it wasn't the real allmans w/o duane and berry. holy shit was i wrong. it was and is to this day one of the finest shows i've ever seen. felt the same when woody passed, and dickey left(fired), i said that's not the real allmans, i'll never go see em again. then i was fortunate enough to see april 3rd at the beacon. damn i love to be wrong!

I just think if Dickey can forgive Gregg for ratting out a member of the family, Gregg should be able to deal with Dickey's issues as well.

Yeah right, Warren is overrated and money-hungry. Get a f- ing lobotomy man. I just saw Mule for $5 in Columbus. I do beleive they could have charged more.

Warren Haynes overrated? Come on. He is one of the most talented guitarist/singers to date. If you ever get the chance to meet him he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Looking forward to B'ham Orange Beach and two nights in Atlanta. I don't think Phil is going to be at Orange Beach I think I heard someone say but it would be awesome.

YESSSSSSSSSS!!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSS! YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! My life is good again!!!

BTW, I saw Dickey Betts a month ago at Summerfest. He may look like a mangy old coyote, but he can still rock it. And if he doesn't reconcile w/ Greg, that means there's another national touring act that plays Allman Brothers songs.

the current lineup is great, i honestly go just to see derek these days. their wouldn't be an allman brothers band if not for dickey, he kept them together back in the 70s. i know he's had his problems over the past few years and probably shouldn't be in the band anymore, but its kind of ridiculous to be completely on gregg's side. his drinking problems affected the band 10 times worse than dickey's in the 90s. he should have been thrown out back then it was so bad. i remember him having to walk off stage for a number of shows. he left during the middle of whipping post one time and warren had to finish singing. i just wish the bickering over gregg and dickey would stop. it is what it is and the band sounds great right now. you can bash dickey all you want. sure he's not as good a guitar player as warren and derek, and has his share of problems, but don't forgot he was the driving force for the allmans after duane and berry died. the band wouldn't be here today if not for him. also, don't say warren haynes is overrated and money hungry. that might be the dumbest comment i've heard on here.

i hope they tear it up in canandaigua, last time i saw the allmans i ended up getting arrested upon entering my campsite with a head full of acid after the show only to find cops at the gate checkin permits. Needless to say derek and warren are incredible together and it was a grate show, although if you ever find yourself at darien lake for a show dont camp at the state park, bad news.

if you wanna talk about dickey betts, all you have to say is In memory of elizabeth Reed. brilliant guitar player and song writer, but alas he was a crazy SOB too often drunk and violent. i love derek and warren, but do you really think they can play the songs he wrote better than he can?

glad glad glad. Really glad to have Greg back! The Allman Brothers Band was the first band I really loved; my introduction to this mistress rock and roll. I wish they'd make more trips down here to Albuquerque, but I'm really excited about Labor Day weekend! I get to see them with my other favorite band (Umphrey's McGee), plus The Mule and The Dog!

last time ABB and Ratdog were at Finger Lakes PAC (Canandaigua --- ironically, the site of my first show ever), a HUGE rainstorm began to fall and everyone in the lawn was getting soaked.

Bobby came on and urged security to open up the pavilion and allow us all under the roof to stay dry. Very, very cool indeed.

can't wait to see the boys again this summer in the beautiful Finger Lakes of New York.!

Actually, I am going to see Warren Haynes/Mule on 7/29 in Buffalo for free. He is suck a money grubber making his show free. Dickey Betts had some drinking problems and got fired. Greg Allman has nodded out at the keys before, probably had the "horse" nods. Anyway, the Allman Brothers have been through many changes, being around 39 years and still truckin'. they are actually a young band for the age of the band. The Allman's Rock!

Dickey wrote in memory, can't hate on trucks and haynes though.

I will say that haynes is awesome, a great guitarist, and definitely not a money grubber but i do agree his guitar playing is a bit overrated (OVERRATED not shitty, he's good but not "the most talented guitar player to date")

I won't comment on Dickey's drinking or if he should still be in the band, but anyone who attacks his playing is crazy. If it weren't for Dickey (and Barry as well) the Brothers would have been just another blues rock band (albeit with one of the best blues guitarists ever) and not the revolutionary blues-jazz band they came to be. Aside from Duane's playing, Dicky's compositions were what set the band apart. Les Brers? Liz Reed? Jessica? All Dicky songs. If you listen to interviews with Duane, he says that Dickey is the better guitarist of the two.

I think the Brothers current line-up is out of balance. It's like two Duanes and no Dickey. The shows when Dickey first left and was replaced by Jack Pearson and then Jinmmy Herring (both of whom have styles more similar to his), were fucking great. No offense to Warren, he definitely brought the band back in the 90's, but he tends to dominate whoever he plays with. Let's see some shows with Derek & Jimmy and let Warren concentrate on Mule, where he really shines and his dominating style is much more appropriate. Jimmy's way too good to be playing in Panic anyways.
