Bonerama :: 06.21.08 :: Sullivan Hall
Bonerama wrapped up a week and a half tour that saw them start out in Panama City, FL and finish up in the cozy confines of NYC's Sullivan Hall. I got a chance to talk with co-founder and trombone player Craig Klein at the show and he was in great spirits. Reflecting on some of the highlights of the tour, Klein was particularly excited about the gig in Wilmington, Delaware, where they were on the same bill with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. While he and other members of Bonerama have played with members of the Dirty Dozen many times over the years, this marked the first time that all of the Bonerama horns (four trombones and one sousaphone) joined the Dozen onstage. "These guys have been an inspiration to us and most of the musicians in New Orleans for so many years. It was really great!" said Klein. Other highlights of the tour included a return to Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa and a first time visit to The Stone Church in New Hampshire.

The last time Bonerama played New York City they were contacted by jazz legend Roswell Rudd, who was interested in meeting them. They hit it off and a few months later Rudd wrote a song for the band and flew down to New Orleans to record it with them. The song, "Bone Again," will appear on Roswell's forthcoming new CD. For the tour finale, the band asked the NYC resident to sit in with them at Sullivan Hall. They performed "Bone Again" and the Count Basie standard "Lil' Darlin" midway through the first set, and it was obvious to all in attendance that the musical energy was flowing onstage. The second set was just as impressive and included two Fats Domino staples, "I'm Walkin" and "When My Dreamboat Comes Home," that had everyone in the room in full second line mode.

These guys are amazing musicians. I actually stumbled upon them searching for new music on myspace and I went down to mardi gras this past year and had the choice of seeing either Dr.John or Jon Cleary and chose Cleary. When I arrived at Howlin Wolf there was free cover and Bonerama was just recently added as the headliner! It was a show I will never forget. Go see these guys when they come to you. The Ocean will never sound the same. Mr.Go is my fav. I will be making the trip from Nasvhille to Chattanooga to see these guys again Friday !!!

If you love this band, take the time to check out their guitarist's (Bert Cotton) other efforts with Have Soul Will Travel. Another phenomenal band out of New Orleans. They only have one disc out unfortunately, but you will find it demands high rotation in your player....
