UMPHREY'S McGEE RELEASES JIMMY STEWART 2007
AND A NEW LIVE SERIES - CompendiUM

Umphrey's McGee
In June, prog-rock powerhouse Umphrey's McGee will release Jimmy Stewart 2007 - an ambitious double-live album comprised of some of the band's most inspired improvisations, sequenced into two seamless 70-minute "mixtapes." Several times each performance Umphrey's McGee delves into the "Jimmy Stewart" creation process. They aim to generate melody-rich, spontaneous compositions, utilizing a Zappa-inspired language of body gestures and hand-signals which allow the band to create structure on-the-fly.

As Umphrey's McGee's sound continues to evolve, each live performance is increasingly a showcase for their "Jimmy Stewart" approach to progressive improvisation, which they utilize as a breeding ground for new material. Fan favorites "In the Kitchen," "Intentions Clear," "Bridgeless," and many more have come from such sessions. In fact, the newest original to the Umphrey's McGee live repertoire is "Waist Down," a song with firm roots in the Jimmy Stewart 2007 track "Eat - 2.17.07 - San Francisco."

Umphrey's is a band always on the cusp of fresh technology and music distribution, and the trendsetting Umphrey's McGee Podcast serves up two 75-minute sets of live UM each month to its 20,000 subscribers. On June 10, the Podcast offered its 66th broadcast, a Jimmy Stewart 2007 companion piece of an extra CD's worth of material from the cutting room. That past weekend, a limited pressing of 2,000 Jimmy Stewart 2007 CDs were available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, with remaining copies to be distributed at shows and though the band's online store. Beginning June 17, the record is available digitally via iTunes and UMLive.net. Also this month, Umphrey's McGee debut a digital-only live series called CompendiUM. The first ten releases in this iTunes series are comprised of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007, showcasing the incredibly diverse range of the Umphrey's McGee live experience.

Can't you just buy those shows off of umlive for $9.95 instead of $15 on itunes?

Jimmy Stewart 2007 is amazing ....

I haven't stopped listening to it since I got it. Umphrey's were the high point of Mountain Jam a few weeks ago. Completely brought the heat. Can't wait to see them with STS9 this summer.

CompendiUM: Live in Chicago, Illinois - 12.30.07

I'm not gonna buy it cuz' I pretty much spend all my recreation money on tickets but I highly reccomend this if you're thinking of buying one of these shows. The three-night new year's run in Chi last year was three of the best nights of my life, night 2 they opened with an awesome Bridgeless, Utopian Fir, 40's Theme, Wappy Sprayberry (A long forgotten sick Umph jam), and an awesome Can't You Herar Me Knocking Jam with Jeff Coffin playing two saxophones at once. And, as always in the Chi for an Umph show crowd energy was through the roof. It was awesome. Definately reccomended.

Phattiebace does not enjoy fun.

This compliation is pretty cool; but I'd reccomend just snagging a show off the archive. 7/6/05 (@ Summerfest) comes to mind as a standout recording. Also, if you want to hear some really borring, uninspired umphrey's according to Phattie, check out the 5-23-08 set from this year's Summercamp. It totally sucks and is no fun to listen to whatsoever. [scarcasm is through the roof here :) ]

Listen to March 10, 2006 from the Chicago Theatre. Highlights of the show include the Triple Wide (first set) and August (second set).

Hoodo - The Bisco comment...honestly...if you want to hear some fresh new Bisco...go outside, find a BMW or Benz with a car alarm, hit it with a newspaper and set it off...BOOM..Sounds just like Bisco (Best car alarm cover band ever)

I think they are the most technical innovative and versatile touring band out there right now. They do seem to illicit alot of of flame wars and animosity on this site. It is undeniable that they attract a younger crowd, but I mean im 25 and having some folks younger than myself doing whatever could be considered "annoying" at a show bothers me no less than when I was a the phil warfield recently and older dead heads just can not seem to stop attempting to tell me what is good and what is not and then citeing their number of grateful dead shows they have seen as that gives them authority. so the coin flips both ways

Obviously um gets people's blood going. I mean I never see epic flame wars erupt over perpetual groove

umphrey's is one of my favorites, always a fun show. i don't really see how some people don't think their jams go anywhere. the umphrey's / bisco fight always cracks me up as well. those two bands are real good friends of each other and probably get a kick out of some of the idiots on here talking about which is better. its a retarded comparison in the first place, they play and sound nothing alike. shut the fuck up curtbraski! that's the exact kind of crap that should be banned from the board.

12.30.07 will go down in history as one of the best Umphreys Shows. Ive seen them about 20 times and i thought they tore it down at summercamp 08 but it has no comparison to what happened "that one night in chicago" !!!!! The Wappy>Knockin on heavens door> Partying Peeps... on top of the bridgless opener, rocker 2 and triple wide, if your not an umphreys fan and listen to this show and it will tickle your ta!nt
