Bo Diddley Dead at 79

Legendary Guitarist Bo Diddley Dead at 79

Bo Diddley
Bo Diddley, legendary guitarist and founding father of rock & roll, died on Monday (June 2) after months of prolonged health issues. He was 79.

Diddley died of heart failure in his Archer, Florida home. He had suffered a heart attack in August, three months after suffering a stroke while touring in Iowa; he had returned to Florida for rehabilitation.

Not only was Diddley's voice and 5/4 rhythm approach instantly recognizable, so was his homemade square guitar, dark sunglasses and black hat. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in January 1987, received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the 1999 Grammy Awards.

Diddley was born Ellas Otha Bates in McComb, Mississippi on December 30, 1928. He would later take the name McDaniel after being adopted by his mother's cousin. Diddley's family moved to Chicago as a youngster, where he first learned the violin and picked up guitar at age 10.

He played a birthday party I was at in Gainesville. Completely humble and loved the ladies! Great video of Bo being himself

such a huge loss for the music community - where would be without that bo diddley beat ???????? never met him personally but he was very cool from what i have heard. my late father and some of his music buddies were freinds with bo and would sit in with him when he played local clubs back in the 60s and sometimes him and his family ( which is what he called his travelling band ) would crash at my folks place ( before my time ).

i actually have a hand made ceramic necklace that he made for me! it is some sort of alien looking stick figure holding weird lightning bolt looking things in its hands!?!? my mother also has a similar piece that he made for her which actually has his name engraved on the back. always kind of felt like i had a connection there even though i had never met him in person......if you don't know don't know diddley!!!!!!!!
