We Are Wolves: Total Magique

We Are Wolves are here to make industrial music, uh, fun. That’s right. These Montreal misfits are proof the buzz bird doesn’t know jack about which shoulder to land on. The follow-up to their 2005 release, Non Stop Je Te Plie En Deux, Total Magique (Dare To Care) is an unruly ass whooping of analogue synthesizers suplexed over caffeinated hooks and clip clopping drum machines that kick like a mule. A smarmy swagger heaved into drams of pure youthful energy almost makes for a happy-go-lucky take on Front 242. Distorted riffs and whiny synth squeals go into the band’s No Wave moxie, and their melodies are oh-so-cool inducements to endless dancing. WAW’s three members – Alex Ortiz, Vincent Levesque and Antonin Marquis – all share vocal duties and their raw, primitive sashay is cooler than James Dean with a lit cigarette. Their awesomely snippy vocal style makes Total Magique the menacing progeny of Spoon and the first decade of Wax Trax! Records.
