this may be a dumb question at this point but does superfly run this site or have some affliation? i am not saying its a bad thing or a good thing, just curious.

I hear you! I remember jazzfest about 8 years ago Superfly was a small operation. I think it's wondeful that they've managed to book some great bands, but I do feel like I helped put someone through college over the years. I'm sure someone's living a lavish lifestyle via Bonnaroo. I've refused to set foot there for years, based on sheer principle.

What??. . .. Are you against profit funkzone????. . . .what festival or tour seeks to make no money???. . . . . I mean Cmon. . . . (although i wont gotta Bonnaroo cause its gotten crappy, you won't go cause they pulled it off and are actually making money) .. .. .(rolls eyes at the idiot hippie). . ..

Just remember to all who talk shit about bonnaroo, Superfly does that too. They always do something nice for JazzFest as well as TN.

Ya, they'll let people build it up for a few more years, then bust out My Chemical Romance as the main act.

SCIcane. . . .im sure Bonnaroo was very profitable in its first few years. . .. cd's dvd's shirts. .. .they built up a BRAND. .. . it doesn't make sense to hurt the brand by the inclusion of Metallica (a group that has shown animosity to ideas like community building and tape trading). . . Bonnaroo has gotten crappy cause superfly decided to back off a bit and sell to ClearChannel. . . (and cause Tn in june, by a highway, with only car camping inherently sucks) Im not against superfly, though they have their faults, but to say you're not going to one of their events because, God-Forbid, they are out to make a buck is just stupid. . . . noboby puts on a multi-million dollar show unless they can recoup their money with a good shot of making some for the next year (or funnel it to a charity, but that is a rare case) .. . . . anyhow, just my opinion. . .

Oh. . . . and all the Dead, Phish, WSP, STS9, Moe, etc. etc. . . . are living a lavish existance based on us buying their records, shirts, and concert tickets. . . .should we hold it against them??? (on principle, maybe?)

Since Bonnaroo and Vegoose have so become big, their lineups for Jazzfest seem to be an afterthought. It's like they don't put half of the energy into it they used to. Remember when the used to have the superjams? Hopefully they will turn it around this year and remember where they got their start.

A Superfly TRUE story. I met Robert Walters numerous times and he is always nice to talk to. I asked him, "how come 20th congress is not at bonnaroo?"

He said, oh.. they boycotted me, because at Jazzfest, I opted to play at the maple leaf instead of Superflys venue.. so they boycotted 20th congress from bonnaroo 1-2. nuff said. I admit, I love galactic and GBA!!!!

you know the artist that have performed at the Country Music Association's Fanfest have never been paid. though that may change now that some of them are harping about it. that is one genre where the artist shouldn't complain too much. they make millions for doing a lot less than most other artist. and the fan base in country music is more dedicated and loyal than most genres, maybe even more so than the "jamband" scene. you could have one hit and 20 years later they will still go nuts when you perform that one song. the CMA has made untold amounts of money off the festival. i don't have any problem with any fest or artist wanting to make money, i mean it is their carrer, but it shouldn't be so outrageous. a ticket to Woodstock was 8 bucks! now the 'Roo wants 300???? I know that there are a lot of artist there, but what else? the only other thing they provide, without a fee, is water inside the fence, and it's well water! it's just a big rip off and someone is making a shit ton of money. but hey, that's the American Dream baby! living that plush life at the expense of your fellow countryman.

Robert Walters shows at the Leaf do sell out in about 10 to 20 minutes though. I'm not sure anyone really got hurt by his or Superfly's decision. Picking up one's toys and going home seems to be a little immature. I'm siding with Walters on your comment, but Superfly has done a lot for some non-headlining artists.

i dont see any indication that superfly has any connections to jambase, they post articles about them just as much as any other major jam band festival or production company

Why should anybody spend 40+ dollars for a ticket with a band that you can otherwise see multiple times for much less in a venue that doesnt sound like shit like the cramped riverboats...especially when there are multiple jams with musicians that are just as talented or better elsewhere in the city for each night

...and there is the charm. If you haven't been on the Riverboat shows, its worth checking out ONCE. The acoustics are that horrible, but don't expect to "see" the band. You're better off listening to them and enjoying the cruise. JZryb, you hit the nail on the head, but I still think (especially if you're with a date) the Riverboat can be an enjoyable experience.

If you have never been to a riverboat show then I would say you should go. The main problem is that the show is only goining to be about 1h 20min. Not enough time for me to get my groove on, but still pretty cool. Best bang for your buck is a late-nite show that starts after 2am and goes until 6am. Now that's where the funky good magic happens down in N'awlins. P.S. the House of Blues in N.O. SUCKS!!!! Corporate run shitbox with TONS of security and agressive searches on the way in. Be forwarned if you are goin to see Umph either Friday or Saturday!

I'm going to have to disagree with CaptColorado's statement about the HOB in New Orleans. I've seen dozens of shows there and have never had any problems. I saw the late night Umphrey's show last year and had a blast!

Wild Turkey

The river boat is what it is and I'll be on it for a first in 3yrs. I must agree with the wise and knowledgable... Captain, HOB is to be skipped at all costs. Compared to chicago and vegas HOB it is terrible and all HOB security sucks. Tip's, wolf, leaf and so many other venues dont get trapped. Sorry Umph, love you but not this year, we will always have tipitina's in 05!

Was going to buy tickets for the Galactic show until I saw the total. With shipping and service charges, two tickets were going to cost me over $113.00. Looks like I'll be making alternate plans. That ends up costing a lot more than two full days at the fairgrounds. Not even close to worth it IMHO.
