Trey's Road Recovery

From www.roadrecovery.com:

Road Recovery Goes Phish'n with Trey Anastasio!
Singer/Songwriter Participates in Road Recovery's Master Class Series

Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - Schuylerville, NY – population: 1,372: Road Recovery teen participants, entertainment industry supporters and Road Recovery staff caravanned 180 miles from NYC to a meeting room above Dwell, the home of KOBO pure soy candles where proprietor Louis Hotchkiss graciously hosted Road Recovery's Master Class with Phish frontman - Trey Anastasio.

Sharing a funny tale about himself, Trey's laughter captivates
everyone's attention during his Road Recovery Master Class

Like the fluency of his signature jams, Trey Anastasio led Road Recovery Master Class participants through a three hour journey seamlessly weaving an interactive discussion of personnel accounts of his childhood, the inner creative evolution of Phish, life on the road, of music's power to unite people, fames fleeting lining, and humbly shared his shortcomings as a man, father, and celebrity. Trey concluded his discussion by unveiling a NEW untitled song that incorporated many of the sentiments expressed during his round circle Master Class.

Trey performs NEW music during his Master Class

Trey dismantled any awkwardness between himself and the Road Recovery crew of strangers by instantly seeking information about the teens' experiences, citing connections and similarities to his own life. Trey's openness and interest in hearing from the group of teens led to a lively discussion about life and the commonalities that forever unite us all in our human condition.

After everything was said and done, Trey connected with everyone by picking up his guitar and jamming with Road Recovery teen guitarist - Ryan Aussem. Everyone witnessed how two perfect strangers communicated clearly and effortlessly through the language of music. The room erupted into freestyle dancing, singing and handclapping accompaniments by Road Recovery teens, staff and supporters.

Trey and Road Recovery teen guitarist, Ryan Aussem jam

"Trey Anastasio is an amazing person to sit down and talk to in so many ways. I feel like I've known him all my life! He is an inspiration to me in both music and recovery. Trey's musicianship is an extension of who he is as a person and the combination of speaking and playing with him is what touched me the most. His playing was phenomenal and he was so supportive of my playing. I will never forget that jam and his words of wisdom." –Ryan Aussem, guitarist/singer, age: 19, sober: 3 years

Feelin the love and each others heat.
Road Recovery teens, supporters and staff surround Trey

"Road Recovery is a beacon of light in a dark and confusing world. Addiction is so tricky and insidious and community is the cure. Road Recovery is all about community, a great organization with amazing programs. I'm so happy to be sober and grateful to be in the company of people getting the point early!" -Trey Anastasio, singer, songwriter, Phish

Road Recovery wishes to thank Bob Kravitz and Dr. Scott Bienenfeld whose efforts made Trey Anastasio's Road Recovery Master Class possible.

Good point chidodger! It doesn't seem that strange to me that this gets some headlines in the light of his recent jailtime (I'm sure he has a publicist!)Who knows what (if any, that is) other kinds of comm. service he has done, I thought he was sentenced to perform up to 15 months way back in April. But yeah, whether or not he or any other public figure for that matter really gives a crap about fulfilling their obligation is really hard to tell. Good news though...

Even if Trey doesn't really "give a shit" about this cause....Does it really matter? Even if he did "put an act on", he successfully inspired and touched out to several kids suffering from the same problems he's struggled with. At least he's taking the necessary steps to improve his image and get his life and career back on track. What headline would you rather see?? Trey get's popped again? Hey Waterinthesky...Listen as I write to you, read the words that flutter through, my comments were mistaken by you. Closed minded and full of hate, you filtered out the true point I made, are you listening...dude? I'm clearly discussing (in response no less) the way the media is handling this, I could care less if Trey were high at this function (that would suck though), if you would have read my above comments you would see that you totally agree with every word I said. I think it's great he's doing this, and I hope he gets better for the sake of his health and for the possible future enjoyment of his fans...

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm glad to see Trey in the headlines for something positive, like cleaning up, instead of an OD. Too many musicians have fallen to their addictions, so we don't need to add another one to the list. great story, and i agree about getting back to the road, [phish or whoever]

But can this really happen?

It would take a lot of will power to be in that kind of atmosphere with all sorts of tempting treats around him . Just the smell of the air at a show could get him into some sort of trouble.

Lets just hope the greatest band on the planet regroups and rocks out!

I have been clean and sober now for over a year, and it has been a challenge to get to this point. I was a heroin addict, and it is not an easy road. I am proud of Trey for staying clean this long. Once you decide not to use anymore, its not so hard to stay clean. I still go to shows, festivals, and all that, One Show at a Time.

I think many of you are ill-informed about what addiction really is. Sure, weed and psychadelics aren't physically addicting, but the mentally addictive properties have the potential to be far worse to overcome than the former. If his problem is that severe, it's best for him to stay sober, meaning nothing extravagent enters his system. For many addicts, one toke means the cycle has begun again, and next thing you know the junkie that was is now the junkie that is. Be smart Trey, you have a family and millions of fans that care about you.

While obviously he has not bettered his music since Phish, there still are some pretty good songs that he has made solo. Those shows were hot when he had the horns with him. As for songs he released on studio albums, I think the song Spin from Shine was the best song he has written since Phish.

Why so much hostility adubvu? Your right. Trey is an addict and always will be an addict but that does not mean he is wrong for trying to help people and get a little good publicity. Let the man live his life how he wants and quit trying to make yourself feel good by bringing other people down with your comments. Try looking at your own life and I am sure it is as flawed as the rest of ours. No ones perfect and trey has never claimed to be. Wouldn't you do community service to keep yourself out of jail? I doubt you can find someone who wouldn't go play guitar to avoid prison. Its something people do all the time who have nothing to gain.

I know I am late getting into this one but I have to comment based on my own personal experiences....I am not comepletely clean but alot cleaner than I was a year or so ago - playing any type of music and continuing to pound out something quality and outside the box takes a toll on you emotionally and spiritually. Hell yes its easier at first to satisfy that desire/expectation - by using (more than buds/booms). It will not last for long. Remember that ETA was not the only one that was burnt out *BUT* put his balls on the line a bit more imho by going right back out BIGTIME and has therefore put himself at higher risk (especially with his energy level). I hate to tell some of you this but - the brilliance can fade. Not that he will not come back some day with another brilliant style - but the old days (8?-96ish) are gone and some of the "phans" need to come to grips with that and GET OFF HIS BUTT! Not hatin - Just being real! Hng in there bud!
