Got it a week ago. Been listening to it constantly. When it's all said and done these guys are going to be seen as legends. Saw them in 2005 and they were miles, coltrane, the dead, and sabbath all rolled into one. Absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD. another late night 'roo face melter would be appreciated.

saw em in 2004 and just this last NYE.. both shows were complete letdowns, although it was better in '04 when they were doing stuff off of tremulant and deloused.

haha savage also said made a reference to mmj as boring, and one of his faves is Jack Johnson. as for the Indie thing, pants dont get much tighter than the pants cedric wears, man.

JingoBa, altough I respect pretty much all music (sorry Garth Brooks), I don't think that omar is quite up there with hendrix. In my opinion, and i stress this is my opinion, I think Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys is one of the greatest gutarists I've ever heard. If you havn't heard, better check yo' self for you reck yo' self. You might be missing out.

I've gotta disagree with the haters. I saw them this past Sunday and they blew me away. The new drummer is a machine, and they were as on top of their game as I've ever seen, mixing in both the older and new material. I like what I've heard from the new album too, down with haters.

man, the flame war commentary is lame. these threads could be cool if people contributed anything but blasting each other about our personal likes and dislikes.

there is so much more to this music than who we love and hate, whos better than who, and comparing apples and oranges

its annoying

i love the mars volta. that being said, when i saw them open for the chili peppers in STL a few years ago, it sounded like total shit. so many people in the crowd were literally covering their ears. you couldn't even tell how well they were playing the parts ('cept the drummer kicked ass) because the rest was just a loud screeching collection of reverberated noise.

that being said, i love the mars volta. just wish their live sound quality was as masterful as studio.

i had heard a lot about how the MV's live shows in past years were sloppy, chaotic and generally not too pleasing to the ears. i caught them in nyc 2.5 weeks ago and i have to say, they are in top form among the best live bands i have seen in a lot of genres. it's challenging music to be sure, and i really had to pay attention to follow them in a boomy room. but it was really breathtaking and deep... like mahavishnu orchestra, zeppelin and a few other powerhouses thrown into a blender that was constantly turned off and on, and run forwards and backwards. UN-BE-LIEVABLE!!!

I saw Mars Volta about 3 weeks and they were good, but the venue (Toad's Place) did not serve them well at all. I was off to the side and the sound was crashing right off the walls. I feel like they're more of an arena/outside band that shouldn't be contained becuase you'll the intricacies of a lot of what they play.

Speaking of Tool, check out my name. I've seen them 10 times. I love them but they gotta do something different with their shows. They'll do a 30 show tour with the same set list.

Nice name Kennan41, I agree with you about Tool doing the same set list, but I would see them for 30 of the same shows if I could. Their sound is so explosive live. And the visuals are sick. Tool+Morello at bonnaroo last year was sick. Highlight of the festival. I guess I better metion Mars Volta since this post is about them. So there it was.

This album is legit. I do agree NYE could have been better but If youve ever been to the Bill Graham you know the acoustics suuuuuck. These guys were definetly on point at Vegoose a couple years ago.

Tonights show (California) was pretty decent, but mellow, since the venue did not allow liqour sales. Sorry, but that helps me get my rage on Especially for Volta. A lot of pot but it brought down the consistent intensity I am used to with VOlta Shows. 1st imnpression of Pridgen was the guy was a non-stop diabolical maniac nasty at the drums. I wanted to yell in a low tone "ANIMAL,ANIMAL, ANIMAL" ala Muppet fame. Yet at certain pinnacle type jams (Cygnus .. Vismund Cygnus - outro) he took too much spotlight away from the band's creative journey and none of us knew if this dude (including in Cedric's responses) was going to bring it back away from what was going on. The sweet part was when the band collaborated as a whole and hooking up with Pridgen during this song at/into differint rythm structures to the key of the ending for the song. And yes, the 60's lamp shade spinny thing was in on it too, love that.

Okay, real quick, a lot of good songs were played from the 2 albums (Amputechture and Bedlam). Very little from Frances. But all in all they were pretty solid on a live level.

Show Started about 8:35 PM with:

Intro - Fistful of Sollars (Sound System)

Opener - Roulette Dares (Solid)

Viscera Eyes (Kinda felt it comin on too)

The rest, great songs (you may know by heart) with hard names that are hard to spell about now, insert here~~~>

No Encore.

Show Ended a little after 11:00 PM

I had plenty of fun. They rocked pretty frenetically tonight, I don't know where these guys get it from.

Eviljams, that spinny lampshade thing is called a dream machine, its supposed to flicker at the rate of your alpha brain waves and make you lucid dream when you close your eyes!

any way... IMO thomas pridgen brought back the deloused intense drumming to the new album. hes great.

Yeah but TOOL is all about the perfection and creating a sound that honestly has a hard time being touched. I have friends who had seen the tour 3 times and even thogh the setlist wasnt that shooken up it was still a spiritual enlightening experience. It depends on how you prep yourself on the particulat day or how your feeling and currents of what they are all about will effect you pending on all the variables. Throwing a 46 & 2 at you may kick your ass or go right through you pending on the day.
