Happy Birthday Jack Black | Tenacious D At Higher Ground ’01

By Scott Bernstein Aug 28, 2014 1:10 pm PDT

Today marks actor/musician Jack Black’s 45th birthday. While the Santa Monica native might be best known to the mainstream for his roles in such movies as King Kong and School Of Rock, it’s his role as the front man of comedy-rockers Tenacious D that will always hold a special place in our hearts.

It’s been a quiet year for The D, but they’ll return to action at their own Festival Supreme event on October 25 in L.A. To celebrate JB’s birthday, let’s look back at one of our favorite performances in Tenacious D history. On September 28, 2001 Jack Black & Kyle Gass brought The D to Higher Ground in Winooski, VT for a ferocious set that included nearly every song from their debut album and their HBO TV show. The duo was even joined by Phish keyboardist Page McConnell for the set-closing “Flash,” “Wonder Boy” and “Beatles Medley” combo.

Exceptional fan-shot footage paired with soundboard audio has circulated for years:
