Tom Petty Pays Tribute To Jerry Garcia At Outside Lands

Legendary rockers Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers headlined Saturday's action at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Petty and his band treated festivalgoers to a similar, though truncated set as the ones they played for their first three shows of the Hypnotic Eye tour with one major exception - a cover dedicated to Jerry Garcia.

Twelve songs into the set, the Heartbreakers started up a cover of the Grateful Dead classic "Friend Of The Devil." Petty took a moment during the intro to say, "since this is the anniversary of him passing way, we're going to play one for (Jerry) Garcia tonight." Saturday marked the 19th anniversary of Jerry's death.

The Heartbreakers first covered "Friend Of The Devil" during a 1997 residency at The Fillmore in San Francisco. It then stayed on the shelf until last year, when Tom and the Heartbreakers covered the song a total of six times over the span of a month including at the Hangout and Bonnaroo festivals.
