Couch Tour Alert | Newport Folk Festival On NPR Music

By Scott Bernstein Jul 18, 2014 7:00 am PDT

Next weekend, the Newport Folk Festival returns to gorgeous Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI boasting one of the most impressive lineups in the event’s history. Ryan Adams, Jack White, Robert Hunter, Jeff Tweedy, Nickel Creek and Jimmy Cliff are just a few of the acts scheduled to perform at one of our country’s great music festivals.

For those who can’t make it to Newport in person, NPR Music will be on hand once again to share some of the music that goes down at Fort Adams State Park.

Here’s what NPR Music has in store:

On Friday night, we’ll broadcast a live audio stream of Ryan Adams’ set from the festival’s main stage. Over the rest of the weekend, we’ll record much of the main-stage lineup online and tweet photos and observations from the festival grounds (@nprmusic on Twitter and Instagram, using #newportfolk).

While we’re there, we’ll capture unique Field Recordings that you’ll see on NPR Music in the weeks to come, and we’ll feature an archive of audio recordings from the festival stage. To get started on preparing for our coverage, you can download five songs from some of the Newport Folk’s most exciting discoveries — from Anais Mitchell to Reignwolf — and bookmark this page for more to come.

We’re particularly excited to hear Ryan Adams’ set, which we’d hope will include plenty of tunes from his soon-to-be-released eponymous studio album. We’ll be sure to update this post when a full broadcast schedule is announced.
