Jamgrass stalwarts Yonder Mountain String Band throw their annual Northwest String Summit each summer at Horning’s Hideout in North Plains, Oregon. This year’s installment starts today and runs through Sunday featuring three nights of Yonder, two nights and three sets of Greensky Bluegrass, two nights of Infamous Stringdusters plus The Del McCoury Band, Del & Dawg, Greyboy Allstars, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers and many others. Four-day passes are available at the gate.

For today’s Throwback Thursday let’s look at two times members of the Grateful Dead sat-in with Yonder Mountain String Band at Northwest String Summit. The 2010 installment of the event featured an amazing lineup that included The Rhythm Devils fronted by Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Towards the end of their first set on July 17, Yonder utilized their guests for a pair of Grateful Dead classics -“New Speedway Boogie” and “Franklin’s Tower.” Not only did Billy and Mickey sit in on “Franklin’s,” but guitarist Scott Law, banjo wiz Danny Barnes and fiddle player Darol Anger guested on the tune as well. Watch how it went down:

At NWSS ’12, 7 Walkers featuring Kreutzmann performed at the fest. Billy K. sat-in with Yonder Mountain String Band on a stellar “Shakedown Street” that also saw contributions from Anger. Here’s pro-shot footage of the cover:
