Cover Alert | Lesh, Haynes, Herring And Friends Tackle Whipping Post

Once again “The Alt-Q” treated fans to many of the songs that lined The “Q”s repertoire in the early and mid ’00s including Haynes’s “Soulshine,” the original “No More Do I,” and “The Golden Road.” When Lesh returned from a liver transplant in the late ’90s “Viola Lee Blues” became a psychedelic tour de force for the bassist’s bands. The “Q” always came up with interesting pairings for the Dead’s ’60s chestnut, but last night Lesh’s band used the tune as a springboard towards psych-tinged improvisation and didn’t sandwich any songs in between “Viola Lee’s” sections. Yet it was “Whipping Post,” making its Friends debut, that stole the show. Take a listen to audio captured by Philzone’s Quinfolk:
