Future Rock: Gears

By: Josh Potter

Under a title as aggrandizing as "Future Rock," a band could go one of two ways: 1) spaced-out, tactless wanking their way into a musical beyond only as deep as their limited vision or 2) humble and humorous in the manner of great retro-futurists who take such a title for its campy '50s sci-fi gloss. Fortunately, this Future Rock is of the latter camp. Amidst a genre of livetronica acts that wander in and out of ideas, this trio exhibits concise compositions with ample changes. Taking full advantage of the studio setting, Gears (Harmonized) comes off as a collection of party tracks in the manner of Daft Punk and Ratatat.

Was really hoping for a more extensive review on this CD. Thinking about checking them out for New Year's and wanted to hear how these new tracks sound. I've heard them do the Daft Punk and Aphex Twin sets, but I am sure that they offer their own distintive sound. Wish this review would have gone into some detail about that.

hey ritestyl - relax. you're right i could buy the cd myself - but to be honest, probably won't - at least before new years. and i wouldn't base my decision soley on a review of the cd; but just looking for what direction the band is heading in. Isn't that the point of album reviews?

people on this site need to chill the f out.

Folks, the CD review section is moving towards more pithy reviews in the future, more along the lines of 100-250 words for the majority of releases. The feedback we've gotten has indicated the majority of folks are looking for a quick sense of a band/release. We'll still do longer reviews for some things but wanted to give y'all the heads-up on the format change. Over time we'll get the balance right as we refine things. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.

This CD is hot as hell from start to finish. Any fans of electronic music should grab it. It is great party music! These guys are insane live. But I'm sure you knew all of this after reading that extensive review......

I don't understand. Are people too busy getting stoned that they don't have 5 minutes to read a review? Honestly Jambase! I've never criticized you guys in the past, but the purpose of this site is in the words. Why limit your talents? People need to slow down if they don't have time to read an informative review. They must think this is Amazon or something. I've found if you don't want to read a whole review, the basis of it can be summarized in the first and last paragraphs.

its a good cd. very very synth oriented, he does allll the solos and work.

drums and bass just hold it together. If you like pnuma you will like Future Rock too. It is just three piece dance, trance. Not bad.

i don't get it...i want to, trust me. i've seen these guys several times the last few years in high anticipation and never walked away with an "oh sh*t!" look on my face. i've found that w/every bisco, lotus, pnuma and BP show that i've gone to in the last 4 years or so...and i'm always giving future rock the benefit of the doubt. and studios usually dilute their work, i dunno, maybe i'll give it a try...again.

This is an excellent album.

Its interesting that the reviewer mentions Ratatat and Daft Punk because if you mixed the two together you would probably would get Future Rock. Much like Daft Punk and Ratatat, Future Rock is very electronic yet has their own unique sound and feel.

These guys compose their all their songs in the same fashion. Couldn't last through two of their shows.

For those wishing to sample the CD. Our website has clips www.HomeGrownMusic.net To hear the full songs - I think you can still stream up to 25 free tracks at Rhapsody.com

I love this CD and have listened repeatedly.

Caught them live after Umphreys & Biscuits this past summer in Raleigh and it was a highly intense dance party!

Just listened to the album . . . I dig. Saw these guys at HSMF before DB and (boy man) I really enjoyed myself. The lead guy has great stage presence and the drummer reminds me a lot of the guy from STS9. Hope they come out West soon!
