Final Day Of Electric Zoo Canceled Due To Drug Deaths

Over the past two days the Electric Zoo music festival has brought dozens of EDM acts and tens of thousands of fans to Randall's Island in New York City. Today's final day of the event has been canceled following two drug-related deaths at Electric Zoo. NYPD officials and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office issued a joint statement, "The City recommended cancellation and the event promoters have agreed. The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with City officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event."

A statement on the Electric Zoo website reads: "The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today."

According to the Daily News, "two Electric Zoo attendees died from apparent overdoses of MDMA, nicknamed molly." In addition to the tragic deaths, at least four more Electric Zoo attendees were treated for drug overdoses at local hospitals. Steve Aoki, Armin Van Buuren, Laidback Luke and Sebastiona Ingrosso were among the acts originally scheduled to perform today at Electric Zoo.
