MEDESKI, MARTIN AND WOOD AT SOLID SOUND FINALE

Wilco’s third Solid Sound Festival came to a close yesterday at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA with a set from groove-meisters Medeski Martin & Wood. The set was billed as MMW + Special Guests, so attendees knew they were in for something special and the jazz trio delivered.
After starting the set off by themselves, MMW brought out Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo as the evening’s first guest on “Pappy Check.” Hidalgo stuck around for a “Shackman” that also featured an appearance from longtime MMW collaborator Marc Ribot. Ribot and Hidalgo then left the stage clearing the way for Wilco guitarist Nels Cline to jam with MMW. Following a bit of improv, Cline added his talents to a take on “Henduck.”
In one of the sure highlights from the festival, MMW + Cline were joined by Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy for the Wilco original “Hate It Here.” The quartet added a swing feel to the song, which sounded like it came right out of the late ’60s. “Hate It Here” closed the set and was followed by a MMW + Cline encore of “Heaven On Earth.”
