Kan’Nal :: 04.20.07
A packed house for the DVD release party at the Boulder Theater had both Kan’Nal and the crowd at the top of their game. “It’s been a long time,” said frontman Tzol as he greeted everyone. Colorful fairy lights and spastic, interpretive dancing with extravagant tribal outfits set the mood, entertaining fans before the band took the stage.

Kan’Nal’s dark sound was often coupled with a glowing, red murkiness. The way the band approached performing resonated with intensity – from shirtless drummer Gilly Gonzalez to Aaron Jerad‘s pumping didgeridoo. Lead guitarist Tierro always seemed to be pushing and cutting with his solos, each note expressed on his face. The crowd reflected the band with unique outfits and all-out, original dancing sprawling out into the lobby. While tribal and exploratory, the music at times resembled Nine Inch Nails in Tzol’s dark voice and the band’s fully electronic sound.

As deep as the audience was feeling it, the band appeared to be just as moved by its own sound, and the environment in general. While certainly not slowing down, the circus-like atmosphere took a different cultural turn when four Aztecs from Mexico City dressed in authentic regalia with tall headdresses performed an ethnic dance routine. As one of the performers drummed, the other three danced in synch. The whole night was much more than a concert, it was an event filled with dramatic dancing and unexpected thrills from beginning to end.

Indeed, it was a night very suited for a DVD release (filmed earlier at the same venue). It was a celebration for band and fans alike. The film itself is reflective of this night’s performance with much of the same magic, dancing, glowing lights and attractions. Certainly, every show is unique but with Kan’Nal one enters into a culture and ambience only they can create, where rooms are transformed into fictional lands of wonderment brought on by Kan’Nal’s cerebral concoctions.

Kan’Nal will perform next in Colorado on June 1 and 2 at the Bluebird Theater in Denver. The event dubbed “Kan’Nal Tribal Meltdown” will include sets from internationally touring artist Ganga Giri and Ooah from The Glitch Mob DJing a set.
