THE COUP: G.I. REBELLION

The Coup Calls Up MySpace Friends To Encourage G.I. Rebellion
Boots Riley Comes Out Swinging Against The War In Iraq

Boots Riley
Boots RileyThe Coup's revered, thought-provoking MC – is hoping to utilize a post of his band’s incendiary, anti-war song "Captain Sterling's Little Problem" on its MySpace Blog as a means to spark a G.I. Rebellion against the War In Iraq.

Riley is encouraging The Coup's 25,000 MySpace friends to download the "Pick A Bigger Weapon" track, which features guitar by Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello, for free and send it via email or burned CD to everyone they know in the military. In doing so, Riley believes the G.I. dissent could prompt Congress to act more decisively.

"I have this suggestion: the soldiers should demand to be returned home, using any means necessary to make this happen," Boots blogs. "This would lead to a swift end to this war, saving countless lives, both U.S. and Iraqi... Congress hasn't done more than give lip service to wanting the war to end. The people that are directly affected by this war are going to have to act."

"Captain Sterling's Little Problem" was originally recorded as the theme for Sir! No Sir!, David Zieger's recent documentary of the Vietnam War. Inspired by the stories that some of the veterans tell in the film, Boots reports that "at one point a Pentagon report deemed half of the soldiers in Vietnam were 'mutinous and not to be trusted'," adding that "the largely unreported G.I. rebellions played a very important role in stopping the Vietnam war."

Counting lines like, "You brought us to this country not to free but bodybag them/And free up all their money so accounting firms can add them," the scorching song – from the Associated Press' #1 album of 2006 – cannot be ignored.

"So far about 600,000 Iraqi civilians have died in this war and at least 3,100 U.S. soldiers have died," Riley writes. "Much has been publicized about the role that music plays in the military today. I've seen a few news segments about the music that soldiers are listening to on their Walkmans and MP3 players – how they listen to certain songs to get in the mood to do what they have to do. Besides the motivation of purely expressing my thoughts, my experience and my emotions, I also make music to influence people to see my point of view."

Riley – who was recently selected as keynote speaker for UC Berkeley's Black Graduation on May 12 – will join The Coup for an explosive set next month at The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Sunday, April 29.

Fuck Yeah!!!! Power to ya, Boots. A wise man once said that "Wars will end when men refuse to fight". I also think that it's high time that those timid people at Head Count get a backbone and start addressing the issues that affect the concertgoers at the shows in which they're always at. People aren't gonna vote just becasue it's their right to do so. They gotta be informed of the issues that have an impact on them when being rallied to regirster.

"By any means necessary," Don't quote Malcolm X Boots, that is not your turf. Hey, Grundle Gravy, your Head Count idea is f'n brilliant. I never really looked at it that way, do you think they're scared because they'll lose sponsorhip/funding if they got preachy (not that what they should/would be saying is out of line or anything, I think the war in Iraq/Bush Admini is a bunch of B.S.), what if they had more involvement as far as possibly having people speak on stage between sets or something? People kids would listen to (I don't know, Zack D, Chuck D, Neil Young, etc.)... I like it, I love it, I want...

As for Headcount - you can't "legally" register people to vote AND talk politics at the same time ...

HOWEVER - that doesn't mean that Greasy Grundle, RP McMurphy or ANY OF YOU FOOLS can't spread the word. Educate, lead by example, organize , get out the word so that when headcount gets people to register, they will know where their vote should go. Pimp your myspace to be full of info and links - DO IT NOW!!!

I agree with you Gravy, but once these young men and women sign that Service Contract, they have to fight when there sent to fight or they will suffer the consequences. Either legally or physically. So the only way to get them not to fight, is if they don't sign up in the first place. And if that was actually ever going to happen(which it's not), then they would just bring back the draft. The only way to end this War, Is to get rid of George Bush. Because his EGO is so big that he would never pull the Troops Out. In his Warped Mind,he Really Thinks that he is going to WIN. And that is impossible because Half of the people in that Worthless Country don't even want us there. No Bush,No War!

I believe we live in a democracy whichs makes it necessary for everyone to speak there mind, or all is lost. People join the services for a lot of different reasons, but I think there could only be a few that sign up to fight. I believe most want education, adventure or even to defend their country (what they should be doing). Invading another country and "hanging out" for years seems to be asking too much of our soldiers, to me anyways. God forbid something happen here, while so many are there. Anyways, I support and love the people that fight daily for me. I'd like to see them all come home safely. peace, guys.

Brainhouse,

Thats not true. Remember back in 2004 when NOFX was regestering people to vote while urging to vote agazinst the Bush Administrations policies? You can register people to vote against a candidate or a party without openly endorsing one perticular candidate or party. Even those zomby Evangelical's do voting drives and urge people to vote against stuff that is "Godless" and "Liberal". What HeadCount needs to do now is get up and stop making organic soy vegan cookies and start taking signatures as and do a real head count to Congress by means of a peition by the people calling the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

.......and as for you Boots Rieley you should start telling those in the service that they can do what their brave commarades before them did which is run to Canada. They never extradite deserters and draft dodgers.

Brainhouse, I wasn't talking about having the freshman-trust fund-hippie-interns working the HeadCount booths hand out Obama and Hillary and Trey is a Jedi stickers seconds after someone drops their pen after registering to vote. But come to think of it (and Gravy you're right about this), that seems to be a damn good idea. Every hippie loves having stickers on the back of their cars anyway. The power of the message is pretty much up to messenger itself. Who do you think some 22-year-old concert goer is going to listen to...ME? Or, a Trey or Zack or even Dave Matthews as they tried doing last time. All they EVER talked about last election was simply REGISTERING. Well, any dumb ass can register, but it takes a true dumb ass to go out and vote for a candidate just because some rock star told ya so. And sadly, those are the kinds of votes that get people elected, and at this point the country needs all the help it can get. I mean, think about it, if "Americans" were as educated as we like to think, how come we keep ending up with dumbass Presidents.

Some music is better than others. Sun Ra was probably the worst band I've ever heard. How they ever got famous blows my mind, and this guy is up there too. Now when you talk about Dokken, now there's some serious talent kids.

I can't believe someone is actually doing this, this is abusrd. promoting mutiny and rebellion in the armed forces that are fighting in Iraq will only put those who chose to do their duty more at risk. this is extremely sad to me. How can you say that our troops withdrawal will save more lives? this guy needs to be deported.

Fighting for what? It's absurd to steal, kill and Lie. Yet capitalism forges forward in it's destructive greed, not even yielding for any reality. Feeding corporate propaganda to genius' who think they can actually gage chaos enough to corral economies, governments, and the peoples; to have an opinion. I'm Grateful the vast majority of the world sees this blunderous wholesale of FEAR that the rightwing demons have sold to the ignorant, greedy, and hateful, for what it is. In the daze of corporate journalism, I'm grateful for the Coup and their very talented efforts to do what true heros do. Art always saves the day. In the name of W.E Dubois, Zappatta, Gallileo, Alice Paul,Darwin,Locke, Joan of Arc, MlkJr., Che, Hugo, Cesar Chavez, and good spellers, may Truths prevail. U.S OUT of IRAQ NOW!!!! Demand your $ go to schools, infrastructure, healthcare, and an open transparent Government that promotes PEACE. Why should soldiers pay with their lives, so big Oil companies can secure Oil contracts in Iraq to continue their pillage of the environment, our pockets, our troops, and now the Iraqi people, who's only crime was having Oil. Praise to the Coup!!!!!!!!

Well, cocheese, it's a stupid idea I agree as well. But remember, civil war, foreign government invasions, trigger happy rednecks and insane Iraqi insurgents DON'T kill people...stupid My Space and Jambase comments do. More at risk? Jumping into a helicopter/plane in a mass walkout/protest (and remember, this would NEVER happen and I don't think it should because last I checked, if someone takes a shit I agree they should clean it up...THOROUGHLY) to FLEE an f'n civil WARZONE to come HOME is a risk?? Dude, not all our soldiers are from Baltimore.

"everyone can pitch in "
on my way to coventry using a back road to avoid traffic we saw a family of scarecrows in someones field. there was 4 scarecrows in the " family " each one holding a sign with one word on it that when put together read "please vote Bush out! "
Whoever put those scarecrows there was pitching in. i pitched in too. when i got home i printed out about 50 or 60 copies of the picture i had taken of the scarecrows. i put double sided tape on the backs of them and stuck them up all over town , on windows at banks , on telephone poles , at atm machines ..etc.
granted no great task by any means but it was my way of pitching in.
of course bush won and we have been stuck with him and his zealot cronies egver since.
there is so much wrong with our political system but the last 7 years have really been fucking out of control.
2008 is coming ...find a way to pitch in.

The answer has to do with voting. Vote, vote vote! The military is not going to mutiny. These brave young men have their present and future depending on keeping their focus. It's how they make split second decisions that save their lives and the lives of others. This rapper has an unbelievable ego. What an asshole! If you sent this to a soldier who is already under duress, you are being an asshole too. But do send a copy to the White House. That's a better idea to me.

Hey Cmaxwell,

What future of the soliders are you talking about? What do they get for bravely putting their lives on the line for a war based on lies? Let's see here, extended tours of duty, slash in combat pay, a stay in a shitty crumbling veterans hospital, their families back at home having trouble paying the bills, not enough psychological care for those suffering from shell shock and combat fatigue. I encourage everybody to go to COURAGETORESIST.ORG and check out the plight of these brave members of the US military who are soldiers of conscience that are fighting for consciencious objector status. I'd rather take the penalty for refusing to fight than lose some of my limb(s) or even worse.

I feel the same way you do about the shitty situation, the fraudulent war, and the VA mess. Dermatitis Maximus. That future includes keeping their eyes peeled tomorrow if they make it through today. But these guys have enough on their plate already without being told if you want have a mutiny and risk court-martial. To me, that's our job. Write those elected representatives and tell them to defund this atrocity. Washington only responds to persistent, growing pressure that is on the rise near elections. The statistics are on our side (cases of violent crime by soldiers against other soldiers.) If your elected representative has to look at the facts enough, their conscience will lead them to ending this mess. Again, I agree with your desired results just not the method.
